Alaska unique route for charter flight to Nome, AK

Fri Sep 06, 2019 4:19 am

Alaska will be flying on Sept 11 from Vancouver to Nome twice within an hour each other. No overnight in Nome. How could be tourists want to spend more time in Nome? Why is that flight charter?

No idea... but as a born and raised Juneauite, I just spent 24 hours in Nome last week and it's one of the most amazing places I've ever been, if you get out of town.

I doubt it's tourism, I would guess it's related to mining or something of that sort.

there could also be a cruise ship departing Nome for the Northwest Passage in the Arctic Sea.

Pax in, Pax out.

It might be the residential ship, "The World". It is supposed to be doing a Northwest Passage transit this summer

Day 2: Gold Rush and Serum Run
Early in the morning, we will transfer you after breakfast to Vancouver airport for your flight to Alaska. After arrival in Nome, we will transfer you for embarkation to the ship, MS Roald Amundsen. Nome is a place of fascinating history. In 1898, three lucky Swedish men discovered gold in the nearby Anvil Creek, and within a year, 10,000 men had arrived desperate to repeat the feat. In the winter of 1925, Nome suffered an outbreak of diphtheria while cut off from the rest of the world by snow and sea ice. The only way to get the serum from Anchorage, 994 miles away, was by a relay of dog sleds. Departs Sept 11th.

Mining seems more likely, as Vancouver has some major mining companies headquarters.

It's from the itinerary of the cruise I posted. It's very common for cruise lines to book air for passengers o/w & cruise the other. I am sure it's this:

It also looks like the ship is currently doing a Northwest Passage cruise, so perhaps the people that get off in Nome will fly out on those two airliners.

There are no mines around Nome big enough to necessitate two flights from Vancouver. It’s the aforementioned cruise.

AS does a few of these oddball charters to or from Alaska from time to time. I’ve seen LGB-KTN, SEA-AKN, SEA-YPR, and SEA-CDB, to name a few.

Most of those routes are seafood and fishing related.

Indeed. SEA-AKN/CDB definitely so. I think SEA-YPR was a Paul Allen thing to meet up with his yacht. Not sure about LGB-KTN...I’ve seen it pop up every summer for a few years now. I always assumed it has something to do with one of the higher-end fishing lodges around Ketchikan.

Busy day at Nome. Both of the AS charters are en route, in addition to Air North and Swift Air charters from YVR. All four aircraft (including AS) are returning nonstop OME-YVR...as pointed out above, likely full of passengers getting off the same cruise.

That’s interesting considering that AS doesn’t even serve LGB. Maybe that’s in lieu of SNA due to being slot restricted.

I can say for certain there were two cruise ships in port yesterday and today exchanging passengers. I was at work and couldn't watch the flights come in, but it certainly was a busy day at the airport. I believe Alaska Air did all the ground handling. 4 Charters, plus the normal Alaska jet to Anchorage. Windy conditions today as a typhoon that blasted Japan last week morphed into a rainy, windy autumn storm for Western Alaska.

Another interesting visitor today -- assuming a cruise ship passenger -- was JNY352. Nome direct to Boston.
