WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

Thanks for the weekly update, this is very odd all these route are flying from October 27 - November 3rd than cut until January. I assume this is an error?

There’s an article that references a seasonal suspension of PVD. I heard the summer flights did well and they are short on aircraft this winter so we will have to see when they extend their schedule next if things are back or not.

interesting move here of reducing on a shuttle route to add capacity on MCO. Guess this is result of cutting JFK-MCO.
Not sure why AA is reducing frequencies on these important northeastern shuttles

PDX boosters want more flights. You can't assume they'll all be by AS. There are four AS A320s making the trip tomorrow. There's not so much logical connectivity xxx-PDX-LAS as to think it's not primarily O&D. LAS is a very large O&D market; DL has other non-hub flights, including half a dozen destinations in California.

DL is the only competition on this route and they aren't doing any holiday cuts. Still 10x daily in December.

SY already flies it. F9 is starting in November. Delta will be the 6th carrier (AS/DL/F9/WN/NK/SY).

The new LAS flights connect perfectly to/from the new PDX-HND flights. In fact it seems Delta is prioritizing this connection flight- when doing a dummy booking, LAS-PDX-HND-PDX-LAS always comes up first. I wouldn’t be surprised to see DL add additional flights at PDX to support the HND flights- possibly SAN, SJC, SFO, PHX, ANC.

SY will have a smaller fleet this winter. They are retiring the -700. Replacement -800 are not coming online like they had planned due to the airline they are coming from have not received the MAX replacements. They are only getting 2 HV birds this year too. They will have 28 vs 32/34 like they thought

Doubt it. More MAX-related cuts. Several routes have been cut one month and back the next. WS were late to the cancel MAX flying until 2020 party. This is the result.

Indeed, leaving YOW-EWR solely to AC. Still, that’s -2/day frequency = -40% capacity change, ouch! I doubt AC will add a frequency or upgauge to a CR9 either. So right when UA will be bringing back YOW-ORD, they drop EWR. YOW can’t catch a break. I guess this is another example of consumers benefiting from JVs.

UA tried and failed a couple years ago with IAD-JAC so the IAD-EGE cut is not too surprising.

Another Southern city cut at IAH by United after years of service. I know lots of folks with USC connections who aren’t going to be thrilled.

Thank you all for these informative posts. This is why I still enjoy this website so much, when informed people post factual information without prejudice that helps to clarify questions like these that are brought up.
It’s reaffirming to know that there are many people on this site who are not just well informed but can deliver it a rather objective and non combative way.

Re: PDX-LAS on DL adds.

IMO, PDX is just late to the LAS-party. As others have posted, several w/c cities already have Vegas service on DL; e.g., SAN-LAS began Dec 2016 with 3 daily r/t and now we see ~4.

I doubt it has anything to do with turning PDX into a focus city or a major TYO connecting point. Just adding some service in a large O&D market, similar to several other cities already seeing the service.

It's MAX cuts. January is at 5 because they haven't cut the MAX from the schedule yet.

Well the same people that saw last week are probably same ones always looking at this, so I am sure they saw the various XWA notes and comments then. Additionally, odd ISN end was an *, but XWA add was not LOL.

Agreed. We have several threads about airlines switching from NRT to HND, so some definitely find the switching of airports interesting. I doubt anyone is questioning the starred DL switches from NRT to HND this week in this week’s list.

I can see both sides of this one. Switching from NRT to HND is a commercial decision that was made by the airlines with a competitive process, so finally knowing the results/schedules of this is definitely news. The entire process provides some insight into the airlines' strategies, and I think that window is what people find most interesting for this thread.

The switch from ISN to XWA is also interesting in that new airports are interesting, but we're not seeing any commercial route decisions made as a result at this point - one airport closes and the other opens, so it's really just a transfer of ALL flights. It's not as though some flights are staying at ISN and the switch indicates anything about strategy.

Not terribly surprising considering DL is flying LAS-SJC/SAN/SNA already. I think this is just for regional demand to go to LAS only, especially with DL flying LGB-LAS starting next month.

Odd I just checked wiki and I'm surprised RDU-LAS is only seasonal considering it's a focus city.

Funny SY, just launched PVD-MSY I think this week ... I'd think it would do well here for the S. Louisiana peak season.

Delta's logic is perfectly fine. You just don't understand THEIR definition of a focus city. FYI..the largest unnerved market from Las Vegas is Tokyo. And Delta no longer has connections beyond Tokyo for the PDX flight. So...

RDU-LAS is only just now starting in January, so I don't know if it is actually seasonal, I presume it will be year-round

I think this has more to do with LAS than PDX......... In the past year DL/KL have added/announced PDX, LGB, RDU, and AMS from LAS, in addition to added frequencies on other routes. Looks like they are building up LAS and serving almost every major market on the west coast: SEA, PDX, LGB, SNA, LAX, SLC, SJC, SAN, and maybe more to come...

Can anyone see the equipment that's listed on DAY-IAD after EWR is dropped? That route had a Dash 8 on it at one point not too long ago, but is running with an E75 and a CRJ right now.

Even though we knew it was coming and Delta’s presence in Tokyo is less than it used to be, IMHO their switching routes from NRT to HND is a big deal and rates an asterisk.

Some years back two of Narita’s old fashioned circular terminals would be surrounded by UAL and NW and then Delta planes. At one time quads and tri-jets. From the observation deck an aviation sight to behold. No Delta at Narita marks the end of an era.

DL is offering two OO operated E-175's on this route, up against mainline on every other carrier. The only market from PDX with 2 ULCC's & six carriers, very interesting & lots of O/D.

I disagree. LAS is a huge bloodbath between WN and NK going forward. I really don't see DL getting involved in that. i see this as DL is positioning itself as the legacy airline of choice in the west coast. And serving a major O&D like LAS is a great way to serve its ff.

It isn't just WN/NK... it's F9, SY, of course G4, and now DL looks like they're getting wrapped up in this. Obviously there's a ton of demand to/from LAS, but it'll be interesting to see how any potential economic downturn impacts that the next time around... last time, Vegas turned into a ghost town

It appears they loaded the flights but have zero's out inventory on them. They are not selling seats. The lack of clarity and poor accuracy of their schedules makes one wonder if they had an intern doing the MAX reductions...
