Noted on FR24 and planespotters a few days ago that Mahan Air seems to have reactivated one of their 747-400, EP-MNB. Anyone know if this is only to replace the 747-300 on domestic routes or if it will see some international flights as well? Will they also reactivate the other two 744, MNA MNC? Or maybe get some more of the type?

The international flights are highly unlikely, given that there is a UK court ruling that all three Mahan -400s are to be confiscated. The other two have been slated to re-start service for sometime as well. I suspect that if they have adequate parts, they will bring them back to active status very soon. The sole -300 is also used only domestically on the heavy trunk routes (THR-MHD, THR-BND). The domestic use of 747 s on sectors of 60-90 minutes reminds me of the Japanese market. With the re-imposition of the US sanctions against the Iranian aviation sector, there is severe shortage of airworthy aircraft. Whatever can be used will be used, even if it is not otherwise the most economic.

Yes. I have rarely been on a flight of any size that has been less than 90% full. The Tehran-Mashhad route is particularly heavy, with 15-20 flights a day, ranging from RJ-85 to 747.

Don't they do cargo flights to Syria?

No, at least not as all cargo flights. Mahan has not had a pure freighter in nearly 2 decades. The typical aircraft for the IKA-DAM sector is the A-310. Would stand to reason than there is some room for cargo. To my knowledge, their larger aircraft, i.e. Airbus 340 and Boeing 747, have not be used on Damascus flights.

The routine cargo flights with civilian registration between Iran and Syria (as well as between Russia and Syria) are on Syrian Air IL-76 freighters.

I just checked and there are actually 290 flights a week each way between these two cities!
