Canadian election planes

Tue Sep 10, 2019 10:03 pm

With the Canadian federal election officially starting tomorrow, I am interested in which planes the federal leaders are chartering.

The Conservatives and NDP have traditionally gone with Air Canada A319s. I am curious whether the cash-strapped NDP can still afford this.

The Liberals have frequently changed their carrier of choice.

I also wonder whether the MAX grounding impacts which planes are available for the federal parties.

Thanks for any info people may have!

Scheer just posted this video of the plane he will be using. Looks to be an Air Canada A319

Yeah, but apart from the campaign slogans and logos the rest of the livery does match AC A319 in new livery.

Cheers

Someone enlighten those not living in the 51st state... Why are they flying around on the election with those two election planes?

And unlike our neighbours to the south, election season usually lasts no more than 6 weeks instead of a year, so you have less time to get your message out.

I can imagine that the going rate for a charter is higher now than it would have been pre-MAX issues. The timing of the campaign is probably pretty good though - the summer flying season is largely over and the zero flex period for AC/TS/others has passed.

No. 6 weeks every 4 years. In Canada, parties aren't allowed to campaign before the writ is dropped. There's some pre-election jostling. But there are rules on what campaigning can be done and what campaign expenses can be incurred outside the election period.

Ouch! I read on CBC that to save money, while the NDP will do some chartering, it'll be ad-hoc and they won't have a dedicated aircraft. Good chance for Flair to pick up some business perhaps?

Until today, I didn't know that any mainline 319s were in the new livery yet.

The Liberal's chartered 737 is currently grounded in Victoria, being inspected due to a bus scraping the wing:

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/libera ... -1.5280484

Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau's election plane sustained some damage in Victoria after a media bus drove under one of its wings Wednesday night.

The plane had just landed in the British Columbia capital after transporting Trudeau, his team and several journalists travelling with the campaign across the country for day one of the federal election race.

A bus, used to transport journalists from the plane to the terminal, was parked close to the plane. As it departed, the bus drove under the wing of the plane, making a loud scraping sound as the top of the bus slowly dragged under the wing.

The bottom of the wing had visible damage, but it is not yet known how this will affect Trudeau's travel plans.

Trudeau has a busy flight schedule planned for Thursday with stops in Kamloops, B.C., and Edmonton.

A campaign spokesperson said there was no immediate change of plans, but an assessment of the damage will be done.

Looks like TS is ferrying C-GTQF into YYJ from YYC to take over for the grounded TQB. Aircraft will operate YYC-YYJ-YKA-YEG-YRQ today. That's quite a bit of damage in a sensitive area, I wonder how long the aircraft will be down. Good thing is the Boeing factory is a short hop away from YYJ should they need technical support.

The damaged Trudeau plane C-GTQB was ferried YYJ-YUL yesterday. The replacement plane C-GTQF seems to be back in the normal TS schedule as it is currently on its way to Orlando.

I wonder if QB is already ready to go back to service for the Liberals?
