JAL reveals updated 77W business class product

Mon Sep 16, 2019 9:49 pm

JAL has rolled out its refreshed 777-300ER business class product.

As part of the update, JAL is keeping the same seat used since 2013, but adopting new deep black seat cover, adding wood trim, and new sidewalls along with updated lighting and IFE screens.
Additionally, the aircraft will see updated galley and lavatory spaces.

13 frames will be updated with initial routes Haneda to LHR and JFK.

An entirely new seat product will be introduced on the A350-1000 due for introduction in 2023.

i can't believe there are airlines that have excellent reputations that somehow manage to skate by with awful interiors. (cough emirates cough)

Is that 7 abreast? Compared to 4 on AA, CX , AY (fellow oneworld members) and others? I am surprised.
Worked for WestAir, Apollo Airways, Desert Pacific, Western, AirCal and American Airlines (Retired). Flight Memory: 181 airports, 92 airlines, 78 a/c types, 403 routes, 58 countries (by air), 6 continents. 1,119,414 passenger miles.

The refresh looks nice. Current maroon/purple was looking a bit drab at times.

Its a pretty good and space-efficient product which offers all aisle access. Basically similar to what ANA also offers in Japan

This configuration is excellent imo.
I've flown in the 789 (JAL) and 748 (KE) and it is private, spacious and you can sleep like a real bed.

Much improved from the existing cabin, which is dated (though the service is very good), but not exactly knocking the cover off the ball...

The 7-abreast direct-aisle access Apex Suites used by JAL business class is one of the best seat currently being offered on the market. It may not be as space efficient as other 1-2-1 business class seats but it definitely provides a full length bed and the window seats are actually very private.

Well they managed to fit 10 more business class seats with Cirrus so I doubt the seat itself is space efficient.

I've flown on this one and personally very much hate it. No storage space whatsoever is my biggest concern.

The middle seat as well. Hands down these seats are the best j class product I’ve flown on.

Korean Air uses the same Apex Suite but it's 2-2-2 in 777. More spacious.

But anyway, while the Apex Suite is pretty nice, it is not enough to compete with the ANA's new Safran Fusio seat.... Let's see what JAL will bring to their A35K.

JL's reverse herringbone is not the Zodiac Cirrus, but the Zodiac Aries. The Aires is a more compact version and the middle pair have their footwells stacked on top of one another in 3D fashion to save space. Not to say the Cirrus is less space efficient than the Apex suite, but it is definitely won't pack an additional 10 seats into the same space.

Always found the JAL seat product is quite nice (so is similar ANA one). No great need to change it.

This is the same as the Prestige Suite on KE. Seat is fantastic, despite not being 1-2-1. Very spacious.

Flew from Haneda to Heathrow in the middle of August on a JAL 77W, the new Business Class in Navy looks sharp. Much better then the purple and brown it replaces. Hoping for something revolutionary when their A350-1000 arrives with a new First Class.

Haneda's international traffic is growing a lot with all these new flights moving from Narita. Where are they going to park all these airplanes, the Haneda international terminal probably has 20 gates and already was full before airlines like Delta and United moved most flights from NRT. ANA has the most extensive HND portfolio so far. Interesting expansion times in Tokyo Bay.

Seems like a decent refresh.

Also likely not worth spending money on all new product today since the life of the 77W will be limited with future A350-1000 taking over the international long haul flying starting in 2023.

ANA will leave the international terminal as expansion of T-2 is due to finish next spring allowing international ops under a single roof for ANA.

It’s one of the best J products out there and my favorite to fly. All aisle access, very private. The middle seat in the center pair is one of the best seats. Super private

I know KE does a 2-2-2 configuration will all aisle access but what is JL's decision for putting 3 seats in the centre? Also, are the aisles more narrow? Where did they get all that extra room to fit in 1 extra seat in the centre. I always find it queer that they don't go with 2 seats in the centre like KE. Can someone enlighten me as to the width as opposed to KE?

But no air vents. I don't understand why Asian airlines such as JL and CX don't install air vents, and force everyone to swelter. Do they really cost that much more?

In my experience, people have a much different perception of "cold" than what I'm used to in Europe. Despite Japan and Korea's bitter winters, many of my friends and colleagues here describe the feeling of air moving over the skin as 'cold' and uncomfortable regardless of the temperature, thus it is avoided. The slight breeze from a seatmate's air vent could be someone's major discomfort.

Makes sense actually. When I did a rotation in Japan, I was shocked at how hot it was inside the hospitals, even the ORs were kept at what felt like at least 80 degrees. So in that context, sweltering cabins on JL makes perfect sense.

What a horrible coffin that middle seat is !
Specially when the two neighbouring PAX close their partition...

For that country that invented CAPSULE HOTELS, that may not be surprising.

But strange they would squeeze that one in : I flew JL in Y not long ago, 8 abreast 787s, 9 abreast 777s, boy did it feel nice to be in wider seats. And catering way above anything I have seen elsewhere, on a par with EK & TK perhaps, but specifically so Japanese.
While I'd gladly fly J with the Japanese, I find their J cubicles subpar compared to the amazing QSuites.

I love all the comments from people who have NEVER flown in these seats. It is without a doubt the BEST business class seat on the market that is available across a handful of airlines after Qsuites. Some might say better than Qsuites (some). The middle seat is fine.

The comment about how awful EK's J cabin looks. Yes it looks horrible in pics, not in person..its fine.

When it comes to 777-300ER, KE's also in 2-3-2 config. JAL only has 2-3-2 on 777-300ER too (since 772ER uses a different product).

The HL80xx 77Ws on KE have 2-2-2 in J.

That middle seat looks a little claustrophobic, but the fact that every seat has aisle access is a big plus. Good job cramming more people into the cabin.

To be fair I have only tried it on the 748i in the upper deck, where you get a bit of extra space with the bins by the windows, but it is fantastic, and once the partition goes out, suuuuper private.

This is JAL's international product. It is in no way similar to ANA's international product, which is 4 abreast.

All I can think is that you're comparing JAL's international business class with ANA's domestic business class.

Truth. Look at the capsule hotels with little ventilation reviewed on YouTube. I would feel as if I were being buried alive if I were in a warm, airless chamber. My experience too is that it is cultural.

That being said, I want my air vent!

For me, U.S.-Asia is overwhelmingly about the sleep experience. Without more bed width, bed length, better padding, or less noise, I'm not impressed. New seat covers and woodgrain? No value to me.

For those that complain about lack of space or being claustrophobic, one really needs to try to the product. The reality in my experience is that its quite comfortable and good utilization of space. Every seat has aisle access and plenty of privacy.

The middle center seat when I flew it felt like being in a fort from my childhood. Wheeeee!

Only downside was lack of FA attention. No adults allowed.
