Thanks for the summary of the 789 point to point routes served by WN. They have always maintained that one of the keys to their success is the sheer number of point to point routes so that passengers don't have to spend a lot of time changing planes.

I think Southwest has changed from aggressively adding new flights from their founding up to 2008. Now they primarily upgauge people to larger capacities. These last two years were the time that they were going to aggressively expand their network with the MAX jets, but sadly that is on hold.

Up and coming airlines like Frontier have been able to expand their network at a much higher overall rate.

You're counting flights, not seats nor RPM, and Frontier is starting from a much lower base.

He’s also using flawed data since WN is now currently down nearly 70 jets counting the 34 parked in VCV and the 35+ they were supposed to take delivery of this year. Let’s see what F9’s growth would look like if they were down a proportionate number of jets.

Maybe plus the, what is it 16 or so, leased aircraft that are due to (have already left ?)) leave the fleet to join United.

Since it was brought up in the OP, does anyone in the know have any idea if WN's interactive route map is gone forever or just temporarily on leave? It doesn't seem that its disappearance can be blamed on the MAX grounding but that's about when it went away. (And of course everything else wrong in the aviation world is so why not?)

My guess is that unless it was "automated' somehow, it must have taken lots of labor-hours to keep it current. Maybe there's a newer, better one that WN will convert to?

I for one certainly hope it does return; those maps are great tools for consumers (as well as for us av-geeks!)

Didn’t it just go away at the last schedule extension. It seems like it was working up until then.

It is a WN thread, but since the OP took the trouble to spell out the entire network of 789 routes, I thought perhaps the appropriate topic was to compare that to other airlines and to it's own past.

I've stated that Southwest aggressively added routes and new airports up until 2008, when the rate of expansion dropped off considerably.

A survey done in March of 2019 https://www.flight-delayed.co.uk/blog/2019/03/14/the-airlines-with-the-most-routes-in-the-world
6th place: Southwest Airlines: 754 different routes offered.
5th place: Delta Airlines: 939 routes
4th place: easyJet: 945 travel options
3rd place: United Airlines: 950 routes. Without the 7 new routes offered by United in 2019, only the 4th place would have been awarded.
2nd place: American Airlines: 1,106 routes
1st place: Ryanair: an impressive 1,831 routes

Southwest does not make a big deal out of the number of routes it offers because it is actually lower than the number offered by legacy airlines. Southwest might counter that the quality of the routes is far superior, because a legacy airline has lots of short routes (under a few hundred miles) to feed the hubs. So the raw number is not really good for marketing.

Why do you say that? Assuming that it is updated, it is a handy list for us airline geeks.

But he/she has it in a handy portable form now. And doing that exercise cannot help but make the person better informed about the WN network in all its gory details.

...and we have EXACTLY the point. Where do you think the data came from? From the website. Taking all of the nonstops and listing them in one place allows one to see the entire network. It also, coincidentally, makes it easy to compare when there are route changes. There was no consolidated list as you mentioned, hence the effort to create it, despite the one who feels it is a waste of time, it was to accomplish EXATLY what you mentioned...one place to see the entire network.

The one who assumes it was a waste of time doesn't see the value. This list will make it easy to compare changes across the network.

And in reference to WN changing direction, It is true that, rather than simply increase or decrease frequency (which all airlines do) there has been an increase in routes being added or dropped. Having a vehicle to capture that is important, for all us geeks.

Thanks for seeing the value in it. I would imagine the interactive route map, at least they way they were producing it, got to be an issue, and hence the change. The list feature, with non-stop options, made this list possible.

As almost everyone knows Southwest began in 1971 with triangle: William P. Hobby Airport & San Antonio International Airport & Dallas Love Field. Every new jet has to fly the triangle before it begins operations.
From 1975-2010 they added 65 airports. In 2010 Southwest bought Air Tran. Between the absorbing Air Tran airports and government forcing United to give Southwest slots at Newark to permit United/Continental merger they began operations in 16 more airports in the next 3 years taking total to 84 domestic plus international airports.

Since that time (what I referred to as changing direction) they have only added (1) Covington/Cincinnati, (2) Long Beach, (3) Honolulu, and (4) Maui.

I think that they have been primarily increasing load factors and retiring older jets and increasing frequency. If we had a running count of routes it would be easier to see. From the OPs work we can see they are currently at 789 routes and from the March 2019 article they have added about 30 routes since those statistics were prepared. But just because the article was written in March, doesn't mean they didn't use old data.

Southwest has announced that they are dropping 20 routes in January, and of course they are closing down operations at Newark.

Personally, I don't think Southwest is going to surpass 1000 jets without adding at least one new airport per year, and a minimum of a few new routes per year. Theoretically with 89 domestic airports you could have over 4000 routes if each airport connected to every other airport. Of course reality will never come close to 4000 routes.

Geek out with the OP data-base. With some quick find & replace in a text editor I made an input file for GCMAP

^There are other seasonal international routes that were not listed (especially during March/Summer). I assume the original poster only listed routes in the current schedule (assuming it was pulled from the Southwest list).

STL-PUJ runs in March.
STL-MBJ runs March and Summer months.

I am sure there are others.

The list shows LGA-SAT, I didn't think a non-stop is offered. Just checked the Southwest website and none exist. Is the data for non-stop and direct flights?

Just curious if the breakdown by region is something the OP came up with or is it broken down that way by Southwest? Buffalo is in the midwest region and Rochester is in the Northeast. 50 Miles apart and in the same state. Seems odd, but I can see a case for it.

https://www.southwest.com/flight/routemap_dyn.html?clk=GSUBNAV-AIR-ROUTEMAP

This shows LGA - SAT nonstop on the site. Not sure when it operates, but WN lists it as a non-stop.

Some and many routes indicated are not yet started, seasonal, specific days only etc. Plus, some of the ones will be ending so it is a fluid list.
As for frequency adds as opposed to station additions, I seem to feel many routes have actually seen a decrease. What is DAL-HOU down to now? Same with LAX-PHX/LAS, LAS=PHX and so on. Used to be up to 20/day each way, but certainly not near that now.
And wasn't IAH the original WN location in Houston at the start?

***** CORRECTED******

This is to update the city groupings into the regions that WN uses in their ONEREPORT. These are the groupings used when WN discusses capacity. For example, according to the ONE REPORT for the period ending Dec. 31, 2018, Following were the capacities:

Desert/Mountain - 18%
West Coast - 18%
Midwest - 16%
Southeast - 16%
Northeast - 14%
South Central - 14%
International - 3%
Puerto Rico - 1%

https://southwestonereport.com/about-the-one-report/

Also, according to the WN website, there is a LGA - SAT listed as a non-stop offering:
Selecting LGA, one- way and Non Stop.

Lastly, these are for the schedule listed in September, 2019 ( I tried to avoid the seasonal by including the month in the title) These are for offerings listed on the website (southwest.com) for September, 2019.

Following are the correct groupings (not sure if MCI is Midwest or South Central)

IAH was the first Houston airport, but it was not part of the triangle route. DAL - IAH/SAT was the start. Later that year in 1971, it became a DAL/SAT/HOU Triangle in addition to DAL-IAH.

Re: WN Route Network - September 2019

WN has had 4 different acquisitions of other operators, which has contributed to its growth, in addition to its organic model. The first two acquisitions were to eliminate competition and grow in a region.

The first was the acquisition of Muse. Renamed Transtar and operated separately, the result was elimination of competition in its home turf. The were additional cities that would come back online (MCO/TPA/SJC) and three that would be eliminated all together (BRO/MFE/MIA) The rest would be absorbed into the operation (SFO/LAS/LAX/SAN/DAL/HOU/AUS/SAT/MSY).

The second acquisition, while eliminating some competition, was about growth in the NW. The acquisition of Morris Air would add several stations to the system (SEA/GEG/PDX/BOI/SLC/TUS/DEN). Denver would be dropped, but of course, added back later. Other cities would be eliminated (EUG/FAT/IFP/PSP/COS) Others wold be integrated (RNO/SMF/OAK/SJC/LAS/LAX/SNA/SAN/PHX).

The next acquisition was really the step into the changing model. Having had a codeshare for several years with ATA, when the company filed for bankruptcy the first time, WN gained more access to MDW. At the second bankruptcy, it was about acquiring slots and gates. The LGA slots and MDW gates were big assets. No people, routes, or planes were acquired, it was mainly about access.

The fourth and last was the largest acquisition AirTran, allowing access to a large LCC and access to several airports. It also included international flying and a large fleet of aircraft to be dealt with (717s).
The Cities that had overlap and were integrated were (SFO/LAX/LAS/SAN/PHX/SEA/DEN/HOU/SAT/MSY/MCI/OMA/MSP/MKE/MDW/MSY/STL/IND/DTW/JAX/TPA/MCO/RSW/PBI/FLL/RDU/BUF/PIT/BWI/PHL/LGA/BOS).
Cities brought on board were (ICT/DSM/MEM/PNS/ATL/GRR/NAS/CUN/MBJ/PUJ/SJU/AUA/CLT/RIC/ROC/DCA/PWM)
Cities let go were (BKG/HSV/FNT/CAK/DAY/LEX/SRQ/EYW/BDA/MDT/ABE/HPN). There were others that came and went as the integration of the two carriers happened, but these were the cities announced at the onset of the merger in the low-fares-farther fact sheet for the two airlines. The last acquisition was the big change in the model with access to larger airports and a large number of stations to deal with including international.

It seems now that the growth rate of new cities, as mentioned, has slowed, and now we see the strengthening of the overall system in terms of new routes and deletions. The model for capturing non-stops is to have a base of data to check from month to month. As mentioned, the changes are now more fluid than they used to be, and are more endemic of the overall system.

This shows LGA - SAT nonstop on the site. Not sure when it operates, but WN lists it as a non-stop.

SAT-LGA is offered as a nonstop a few Saturdays in December.

Does anyone know how many a/c are roughly based at each of the top 5-10 hubs?

The schedule must change fairly rapidly. They have the daily departures from top 10 airports only 7 months apart and there are significant changes at some airports

Code May 2019 Nov 2018
MDW 238 225
BWI 215 209
LAS 211 204
DEN 204 203
DAL 195 180
PHX 177 183
HOU 166 164
LAX 125 130
OAK 124 127
ATL 123 126

There were at least two HOUS instead of HOU. I am not trying to be nitpicky, but I tried downloading them into GCMAP to study route lengths and every minor error broke down the software.

shortest routes in statute miles
KOA OGG 84
HNL OGG 100
HNL LIH 102
MDW GRR 137
HOU AUS 148
GSP ATL 153
...
BWI OAK 2447
OAK LIH 2457
HNL SMF 2462
SJC LIH 2466
longest routes in statute miles

If there is a BWI - LIH direct flght with a layover in OAK at over 4900 miles in a single B737 you get bonus masochism points.

The mathematics of developing and efficient point to point network can be quite complex.
https://commons.erau.edu/cgi/viewconten ... text=jaaer

Point to point networks are particular efficient in inclement weather or catastrophes at hub airport. The other problem with hubs is you need to have arrivals and departures in waves (especially with long international flights).

Allegiant Airlines has actually done Southwest one better by prohibiting any transfers on their airline at all. While that means that the profit margin is extremely high per jet, it does severely limit how big the airline can get.

I thought that this is a WN thread...mariner reincarnated?

If you want a better metric for point to point service, try dividing the the number of routes by the number of cities served. AA, DL and UA are largely buoyed by an impressive list of cities that are connected by just one or two hubs. Not truly point to point since connections are a huge part of the operation.

Unlike EasyJet, Ryanair, or Wiz, Southwest does not have planes based at individual airports. So it's really an unanswerable question.

I agree it would be a better metric for analysis, but all I said was Southwest stopped using the number of routes for marketing. Even if you look up "corporate facts" they don't list the number of routes.

For marketing they use facts like In 2018, the Company's average aircraft trip length was 757 miles and the average passenger fare was $151.64 .
For 70% of the customers the point to point network means they only have to board a single segment and no connection is required.

That's about 20 cents per mile if you don't connect, while the standard IRS mileage rate for cars in 2018 was 54.5 cents per mile.

Look at the numbers for net income per $100 operating revenue for the first quarter of 2019 (domestic market). Allegiant is not a very big airline, and they fly to a lot of small airports, but without connections they have a very simple operation.

Domestic | Airline
$4.08 | American
$6.14 | Jet Blue
$6.54 | United
$6.83 | Alaska
$7.77 | Delta
$7.85 | Frontier
$9.13 | Spirit
$10.20 | Southwest
$10.23 | Sun Country
$10.66 | Hawaiian
$18.77 | Allegiant

I don't know how many people noticed but the last 3 month statement had mostly negative changes for Southwest compared to a year ago.

There were fewer passengers on shorter lengths, reduced trips and seats, and nearly identical seats/jet since all of the smaller jets have been retired. Cost per available seat miles was way up, but fuel costs were down as was consumption. Payroll was up. Technically there was 23 more aircraft, but 34 were unable to fly.

Southwest's CASM at 12.36 cents is the highest it has been since 2014.
Previous years were 11.74 - 2018| 11.53 - 2017 | 11.29 - 2016 | 11.26 - 2015 | 12.55 - 2014

2019 Operational Metrics 2018 change %
34,924 Revenue passengers carried (000s) 35,266 -0.97%
989 Average length of passenger haul (miles) 997 -0.80%
750 Average aircraft stage length (miles) 763 -1.70%
347,684 Trips flown 353,928 -1.76%
52,398 Seats flown (000s) 53,301 -1.69%
150.7 Seats per trip 150.6 0.07%

2019 Cost Metrics 2018 change %
12.36 CASM (cents) 11.5 7.48%
2.13 Fuel costs per gallon 2.24 -4.91%
532 Fuel consumed, in gallons (millions) 543 -2.03%
59,793 Active fulltime equivalent Employees 57,674 3.67%
753 Aircraft at end of period 730 3.15%

2019 Financial Metrics 2018 change %
$157.10 Average passenger fare $151.94 3.40%
$741 NET INCOME (millions) $733 1.09%

The bottom line is if Southwest didn't pay $83 million less in fuel this quarter, they never would have been able to increase "net income" by $8 million.

Since fuel costs are largely out of control of the airline, I expect to see some big changes in the network as management attempts to cut out underperforming routes. We have already heard some big announcements like closing Newark and shutting down 20 routes.

Right now, I am bearish on Southwest.

Maybe there are issues. But how does the CASM of an early-build 73G compare to the CASM of a MAX? The first 73G are getting to be maintenance hogs; when I check FR24 and see a 700s tail number planned, I anticipate being delayed and am usually right.

I am sure there is a difference, but I don't have any metrics.

When I say that I am bearish on Southwest, I don't mean that I expect them to break their incredibly long streak of quarters without making money when they present 3rd quarter on 24 October. I just mean that the next two quarters may see the lowest percentages as they have since CASM was this high 2011-2014.

Southwest's Net income doesn't look so bad compared to legacy carriers for last quarter. It was ahead of much larger AA.
Delta Air Lines net income for the quarter ending June 30, 2019 was $1.443B.

I don’t disagree with any of that. I’m just not sure that the numbers will be that meaningful until the MAX situation gets sorted out. The start of Hawaii also likely has had a negative effect on financials, though that may already be abating.

Well the Hawaii flights and the MAX grounding happened in March, so they only affected the 2nd quarter. Southwest has been dropping since the end for much longer than that.

I'm not saying Southwest is in trouble, or that it is in danger of losing money for the year, I am just saying the gold crown in aviation seems to have passed over to Delta.

Of the big 4 airlines they are almost on opposite spectrums. Southwest has the most point to point network (11 operating bases and 8 focus cities), and Delta is the most extreme hub system of the legacy airlines (other than Hawaiian Airlines) with 50% of their domestic seats at any one time either flying into or out of Atlanta Airport.

JetBlue Airways net income for the quarter ending June 30, 2019 was $0.179B, a 247.93% decline year-over-year.
JetBlue Airways net income for the twelve months ending June 30, 2019 was $440M, a 45.34% decline year-over-year.

Re: WN Route Network - September 2019

Tue Sep 24, 2019 2:37 pm

Is there an easy way to answer simple questions.

I am guessing that given the 11 SWA operating bases there is a route from each one to the other 10. I suspect that the answer is YES, but it is difficult to verify easily.
Atlanta ATL
Baltimore BWI
Dallas–Love DAL
Denver DEN
Houston–Hobby HOU
Las Vegas LAS
Los Angeles LAX
Orlando MCO
Chicago–Midway MDW
Oakland OAK
Phoenix–Sky Harbor PHX

If I expand the question to include the 8 "focus cities" the answer would appear to be NO. For instance, there are only routes from ATL to OAK in San Francisco Area, but not to Sacramento and San Jose. I do not know how many links are missing.
Austin AUS
Nashville BNA
Fort Lauderdale FLL
San Diego SAN
San Jose (CA) SJC
Sacramento SMF
St. Louis STL
Tampa TPA

If we knew the answer to these simple questions it would capture the mental image of the point to point nature of the SWA network much better than a list of origins and destinations.

I suspect that SWA executives have a table that they can review where they consider their core network to be the links between these core 19 airports and then they look at the outliers to the other 70 domestic airports compromising the entire network.

If this were presented as a matrix you can see there are some errors. For instance PHX->DEN must be matched by DEN->PHX
