Updated: DL to fly from BOS to LGW and MAN, seasonally FCO as well as 2nd daily flight to CDG

Fri Sep 20, 2019 2:23 am

I'm hearing Ed will be in BOS next week to announce a couple new routes. Don't have any further information. I wonder what destinations will come next now that they will have all of A to themselves. Thoughts? Guesses?

Hoping we'll see a daytime/morning flight for SJC finally.

Maybe SYR? Syracuse is one of the top 5 fastest-growing destinations from Boston.

As far as US stuff would go - SJC seems like an obvious add, probably more short range stuff. Places like SAT, PDX and DEN seem like interesting possible adds too.

This reminds me of the rumor a few weeks ago that BA would have a major Tatl announcement— and they never did. What’s everyone’s source and why not wait until an announcement?

I heard a rumor that all delta planes in to Boston and Boston only would be painted pink with purple polka dots. Some leftover WOW paint being put to use.

Probably a good guess. DL had used 767s on JFK-Amman so they have the range.

DL adding nonstop service to CLT, DFW, DEN, GRR, IAH, SDF, MSN, MEM, OMA, OKC, PHX, PDX, STL, SAT, and SAN out of BOS might happen as these are some of the top domestic destinations traveled to from Greater Boston that DL doesn't currently serve nonstop from BOS.

I think that DL will likely announce some additional domestic nonstop routes out of BOS in Fall 2019 as DL doesn't currently have nonstop service out of BOS to some of the top destinations traveled to from Greater Boston.

What SEA is to DL on the west coast BOS will be for DL on the east coast. With these upcoming announcements the scope of DL’s international flying from BOS will surpass the number of international flights offered from SEA. I think BOS will end up a larger hub for DL. Maybe not as many flights, but more seats due to larger aircraft (A321, 757, 76W & 764, A330s).

If this is the announcement that DL is turning BOS into SEA east, on the transborder front, YUL, YQB, YOW and anywhere in Atlantic Canada would all be possibilities.

It is truly incredible how DL can make ATL, JFK, and BOS work for essentially the same markets with little conflict.

Wow. And DL Has added DUB, MAN, LGW, LIS, and EDI in just the last two years from BOS. I wonder if they are interested in FCO at this point, although that route requires more resources since the flying time is longer than the existing destinations.

Nah, FCO can be done with 1 plane just like CDG, AMS, LON, etc.

But heck - if DL does announce TLV then clearly they aren’t worried about routes that require more resources.

Keeping my fingers crossed that ATH gets announced. BOS hasn’t had service to ATH since OA pulled out in the early 2000s.

How much passenger capacity does BOS even have with DL now wanting to make it a hub? SEA has its capacity issues and I would assume BOS will have the same issues in the near future?

Don't make TLV the next DTW. It doesn't a bigger plane if the numbers don't work.

DL has two flights to AMS and CDG has 2 daily flights when AF is added.

During summer season, CDG has 3 daily flights (2 AF, 1 DL), not 2.

That kind of thinking ignores competition on an airport pair. BOS-DEN may be a high-numbers pair but it's already got Frontier, JetBlue and 5x United on it (with UA benefiting from onward connections).

I’m thinking it would be more along the lines of routes that turn up the heat on Jetblue and/or limit their growth opportunities than riskier long range international flights like TLV. They have strategically covered nearly every potential B6 route for Europe already.

Let’s be real, DL is not making gobs of cash in BOS while they duke it out with B6....i imagine their strategy is to win that battle.
Experience is what you get when what you thought would work out didn't!

I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see DUB go year round. The summer season this year has been longer than last & the route is returning for a couple of weeks over Christmas & New Year.

Aer Lingus are the only other airline on the route and flying double daily for most of the year. They’re getting decent connections at BOS with their B6 partnership so no reason why DL couldn’t make it work

While there may be some more international DL adds to BOS, sooner or later DL is going to have to increase their US domestic network as well to help feed all these new international destinations.

SDF seems likely and I believe Louisville is giving a subsidy for it. Larger markets like DFW or CLT would not shock me. OKC is least likely on your list.

I think they are going to do PDX at some point to irritate both AS and B6. It's highly seasonal however- my theory is that the Portland to Boston VFR do not want to come to New England in the winter.

Also they may joinly announce with KE that ICN goes daily.

I can understand DL not adding BOS-DEN nonstop service as F9, B6, WN, and UA all already serve DEN nonstop from BOS. However, DL has gone head-to-head with B6 on other nonstop routes out of BOS in recent years (including some that have nonstop competition out of BOS on carriers other than B6).

DL, F9, WN, and UA all also already serve ATL, CVG, DTW, LAX, MSP, LGA, SLC, and SEA nonstop from DEN. DL might be able to make DEN-BOS nonstop service work if DL is able to make DEN-ATL/CVG/DTW/LAX/MSP/LGA/SLC/SEA work with nonstop competition from F9, WN, and UA. However, one big difference between DEN-BOS and DEN-ATL/CVG/DTW/LAX/MSP/SLC/SEA is that B6 already serves DEN nonstop from BOS whereas B6 doesn't currently serve CVG and B6 doesn't serve BOS nonstop from ATL, DTW, LAX, MSP, SLC, or SEA.

This is what I believe as well. However, given that BOS is high in the list of unserved routes and the fact that the AIA Marketing Director recently said that there will be important long haul developments in 2020, DL could surprise us :)

If its attacking B6 I could see CLT DFW PHX and RIC which are arguably the smaller/weaker B6 outposts from BOS that dont have DL competition

If they wanted to add something new for BOS I could see places like GRR SDF GSP and BTV

Combined though I think those 8 are likely the next domestic routes for DL at BOS.

My guess is 2 new international transatlantic routes from BOS and perhaps some additional domestic routes to feed the growing BOS hub operation. BOS-FCO would not surprise me at all.

BOS-BRU 1x daily would be nice, or at least 5x weekly. When Sabena flew BOS-BRU it worked well. No one ever did it again, since Sabena went bankrupt back in 2001.
And what about BOS-NCE 1x daily? If not year long, at least seasonal during the summer, say from early June till late September. That would be good. No one has ever done it.

VG Airlines flew BRU-BOS (along with JFK and LAX) briefly in 2002 before going belly-up. I am a bit surprised Brussels Airlines (which uses SABENA's SN code) has never added BOS given that it was said BOS was one of SABENA's stronger transatlantic routes. However, their German corporate overlords might not have wanted the additional capacity across the Atlantic.

Blueknows wrote:

I can't really see BTV. Burlington is basically a three-hour drive unless you're trying to go at rush hour in Boston. Weather impacts ten days a year don't really justify air service for the other 355.

I think the most obvious holes right now for DL out of BOS would be CLT and DFW. They could probably be reasonably competitive with 3 daily E170/5 to CLT and 2 daily A220 to DFW (or even E175 to start).

This isn’t a rumor. Apparently the two new transatlantic flights were mentioned in a video with Ed on the DL intranet. So if you’re telling all the employees, it’s basically public lol.

Call me a realist, but you can't have an organization of close to 90,000 people, and not expect information to leak out quickly especially in the age of social media.

BOS-STL. Make it like MKE. WN currently has a monopoly, and five daily 737s with no competition. Also, SAN would be advisable. I'm thinking STL on an E175 and SAN on a 738.

Apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, but with the new gates that DL is taking back in Boston, how many flights per day could they feasibly support?

Where’s that video? We can’t seem to find anything on deltanet or the flight operations portal - nothing is listed in the Flight Ops weekly bulletin other than some issue with late bids for a particular fleet type. If you are referencing a “Delta Proprietary” video on Deltanet, it will never make it to the public eye. Your use of the word “apparently” does not instill confidence. If you have not seen the videos yourself, this continues to be an “apparent” a.net myth.

The joke will be on us if the two new international flights end up being the already-announced BOS-MAN and BOS-LGW :duck:

Assuming there are, in fact, two new international routes, I could see BOS-SNN, BOS-MAD, or maybe a wildcard BOS-GVA.

On the domestic side, I think BOS-SAN and BOS-SJC are possible transcon adds that are important for the local business market. And I do think DL could make the likes of BOS-MSN, BOS-GRR, BOS-SDF, BOS-MEM, and BOS-GSP work (large RJs). And DL could probably steal BOS-ROC and BOS-SYR from AA if they made a play for them.

Where are they getting the frames for this expansion??

There are new 339s arriving, as well two more 359s early next year. The 339s should free up some 763s from SEA to take over 752 long haul routes or to start new services. Also, with NRT-MNL and NRT-SIN ending, that's two more 763 frames theoretically available. Another route from last summer that we know isn't returning is LAX-AMS (333). I believe there will be a few 763s retiring over the winter, but with the new frames coming online there should still be some capacity for expansion.

Another thought is that DL has been starting some of the new routes from the Northeast (e.g. JFK-PDL, BOS-LIS) with 75G/75H frames that are domestic configured aircraft with ETOPS. If DL were to start a route such as BOS-SNN or BOS-MAD, that could be a possibility.
