L-1011 used in Audi TV Commercial

Sun Sep 22, 2019 2:08 pm

Nice to see an L-1011 used in a 2019 commercial. Anyone recognize the plane or airport?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shKCTep5yoM

Reminds me of when they used a CV-880 for a Dr. Dre Video.

This plane is built to withstand anything... except a bad pilot.

Orbital ATK bird (Former AirCan)

Shot at its home at MHV (Mohave, CA), about three months ago. Tail colors & terminals/tower added in post, but all taxi scenes are organic.

And yes, it was pretty neat they chose the L1011 for this job.

Yes, wide body plane on the outside and narrow-body on the inside (maybe 737-200). Just like most movies. FAIL.

Given that there is only one functioning L1011 remaining, this would have to it (and this was my first thought as well!)

Which begs the question, is this the only functioning aircraft at MHV?

Possibly only functional 1 they could get approval to use.

So she's arrested on an ancient plane in the desert. My bet is she is an American spy in the middle east and she just got caught.

Could be an illegal or a con.

Why does she have to be American.

Hello... the chick fell asleep on a cramped narrow body and dreams she is handcuffed on still the same cramped plane between two men but escapes it and jumps out of a wide-body and into her dream phantasy of space, solitude, and performance of an Audi.

Then she wakes up stuck between the two same men in her dream she was handcuffed to only realizing then she was in a dream phase and not handcuffed.

It is a brilliant commercial actually. Good job Audi
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

Do they run it often? You think it taxied out on its own or with a tug?

99+% of American TV viewers aren't going to recognize that as an L-1011. It's likely that many who think they do (big, 3rd engine in the back) call it a DC-10, as that found more U.S. major carriers and higher frame count. Fewer still are going to think 'Hey, widebody outside, single-aisle inside.' Audi runs some fairly edgy TV commercials in the U.S. market. This is of the pattern they've established. IMHO the use of the L-1011 has no particular meaning here.

My all time favorite airplane. Flew Delta L-1011 ‘s too many times to count. So sad to see them go out of service. Great job Audi.

Beautiful looking plane, was my Dad's favorite for some reason, considering he was a very occasional flyer, but he flew on an AC L-1011
to FRA once , and it was his fav since then, lol!

Yes. It has a regular run-up & MX schedule to keep it airworthy.

Taxied under its own power. It flies too on an occasional, but scheduled basis.

Seeing the TriStar actually took me out of the commercial. I got more caught up in the anachronism than the story or the car.

It often infuriates me when in films, movies, cartoons, etc., the exterior of airplanes doesn't match the interior (in this video, the interior is a narrow body and the exterior is a wide body).

But seeing that reminded me of this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJ9uWsvR1l0

I saw this L1011 and was wondering if it might be the same one used in the movie "Passenger 57"? We had THAT plane briefly at our AA maintenance base AFW in Ft. Worth years ago. It was in REALLY bad shape. It had such advance skin corrosion the rivets were pulling through the skin. Couldn't imagine it lasted very much longer if that wasn't addressed!

Passenger 57 used Eastern Airlines N330EA, which ended its life with Faucett Peru as OB-1504, scrapped in 1998.

That is super cool to see. Love this bird.

If anyone is interested in seeing an ultra HD L10 takeoff in 2017 with a beautiful sound, here is a YT link:

It looks like that L1011 may be done soon. Only one more Pegasus rocket left on the books.

There was another launch for Pegagus, but SpaceX underbid it and won the launch contract.
