Just waiting for the first non-stop to Asia. Will be a pretty momentous day. Prob NRT, ICN, or a China major.

China is out of the question. ICN seems like the most likely so they can feed connections.

KLM delays Austin to March 29, 2021, but will now use the 787-9 instead of the A330-300.

Pleased to see this, but genuinely surprised that the start date is just after the business-fare heavy SXSW period. Moving this up by 2-3 weeks would allow KLM to capture some traffic with really high yields.

Could do with a thread title change as well, perhaps.

If KLM had confidence there was going to be a meaningful volume of high fare traffic they would schedule it to operate for SXSW.

https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2020/0 ... w-layoffs/

Or, the 'subject to change' language right from SXSW:

When will future SXSW events be held?
SXSW 2021 is currently planned for March 12 - 21, 2021.

These preliminary dates are subject to change.

Don't they usually run a "special" section during SXSW? That may be the strategy again; not on the regular schedule, but a special run during the event.

They did that in 2019 and I believe in years past, though the details I cannot recall.

Only high tech would be attracting this market. Live Music and Formula racing is not unique to Austin

It is unique to Austin, as it's the only one in the US.

Austin is a growing city, good education, tech jobs, nature, restaurants, still part of larger than life Texas, some interesting American history etc etc. It's routinely rated as one of the best cities in the US for those reasons. What reason does anyone have to visit any city, if not those things?

In short, Austin has money.

Also barbecue. I recall an article a couple of years ago where BA had determined that something like 3-5% of their UK-originating passengers were coming to Austin on a mission to eat. Wish I could find a link to that article.

I highly recommend Terry Black's BBQ!

Check out the Barton Springs pool....now THAT is TRULY unique to Austin!

I think you underestimate the touristic draw that Austin has. Not to mention the history that surrounds the area. People can also easily drive down to San Antonio which is equally as touristy as Austin, if not moreso.
