Germanwings / Eurowings Operations

Fri Sep 27, 2019 2:33 pm

Hi

I visited London Heathrow last weekend and saw two Germanwings branded aircraft arrive. I thought Germanwings did not exist anymore.

I know Germanwings is a wholly owned subsidiary of Lufthansa and that when going to the Germanwings website you are directed to the Eurowings website.

Is this a case of Germanwings operated aircraft on behalf of Eurowings using Eurowings callsign. Are the flightdeck employed by Germanwings and are their aircraft registered to them on the German register?

Does Germanwings still have a operating certificate / ICAO code (GWI)?

Regards

Len
Favourite aircraft is the A350-900.

I too thought that as well. I booked a flight with Eurowings to Stuttgart from Heathrow and the flight is operated by Germanwings.
Is mayonnaise an instrument?

Germanwings still excist but exclusively operates for Eurowings. I believe that the unions weren't happy with the merger of 4U and EW, so LH decided to keep 4U as a operating airline. The 4U/GWI is not used on flights anymore but It's still "owned" by Germanwings
Types flown: A319, A320, A32N, A321, A332, A333, A343, AT43, AT75, AT76, B717, B732, B735, B736, B737, B738, B752, B753, CRJ9, DC10, DH4D, DHC3, E135, E145, E175, E190, E195, F100, MD11, MD81, MD82, MD87, RJ1H

... and Lufthansa. Aircrafts operated by Germanwings for Lufthansa do not count as wetleased. The total number of wetleased aircrafts is limited due to union-contracts.

4U codes and callsigns are still in use, but only for ferry and maintenance flights.

It's been a few months since I had a flight on a Germanwings aircraft, but cabin crew also wore Germanwings uniforms.

As far as I know, Germanwings crews have similar contracts as the Lufthansa mainline crews. Means more money, more benefits. So no wonder they want to keep their company running and work together with the unions against Lufthansa's plan to shift all operations to Eurowings, where the people get paid much less.

Even if they operate with a separate AOC at the moment, Lufthansa's expressed intent is to merge the whole EW cluster into one AOC (including Eurowings Europe). Given LH's current feud with some of the unions, I won't speculate on the timeframe...
