Updated: Cyprus's Tus Airways suspension of operations

Tue Oct 01, 2019 7:22 am

Cyprus's regional career Tus Air has announced yesterday that they are suspending their winter operations in order to rebrand and expand for next summer.

They have announced that they will expand with "larger aircraft", with a new name and a lot of new destinations.

Currently, they only serve Israel and Greece. Whilst those two will definitely return, I can only imagine Beirut, Amman, Cairo, London and Paris as other destinations.

What are your thoughts?

Why exactly do they need to rebrand ? I'm really quite dubious as to what is behind this

The current brand is associated with regional business travel. TUS stands for The Ultimate Schedule (which is bad, I know), so I believe they want to rebrand into something that makes more sense...

The new name will be ELA AIRWAYS and the airline will reposition as ULCC:

They also need an aircraft newer than their current Fokker fleet. Secondhand Embraer 190/195 aircraft might work for them.

We want to expand, so we're closing down. Makes perfect sense.

TUS Airways suspended operations quietly on March 23rd 2020 due to the COVID19 virus outbreak. So Iguess, it is also the end for ELA AIRWAYS... :tombstone:

LOL "Ela" in Greek means "Come" as in "Come on", "Come here", etc. But some people may find it to be equally lame once they try it.

Shame but not surprising, they struggled from the start. I remember on their first flight ever (I think to Haifa) they had a single passenger. Cyprus is brutal, Larnaca in August has over 1.000.000 passengers while in November between 250.000 and 300.000. It's very difficult to cope with such fluctuations in demand.
