B17 Crash at BDL October 2nd, 2019

Wed Oct 02, 2019 3:22 pm

https://www.wfsb.com/news/hurt-in-vinta ... 67428.html

Sounds like the crew got out okay. They say it's Nine-O-Nine N93012, was a fire bomber with Globe Air in Mesa.

The B-17 ended between some trucks and tanks next to a building. There is one areal picture. I hope I am wrong; I have my doubts, the crew got out alive. It is likely, the injured were staff on the ground.

This aircraft "makes a living" by selling rides for a $450 donation and it is very likely to have had about a dozen passengers in addition to the flight crew. A very sad day..

The Hartford Courant is reporting "at least two dead", multiple injuries to the other passengers on-board.
I also had an earlier post deleted, maybe because I said that I had heard reports of two fatalities but didn't have a link for support. Sad day for those that died; sad end to a great aircraft.

Does anyone know how many B-17’s are still flyable or could be made flyable?

Just talked to friend who was flying the CAF B17 until recently and he thought there may be as many as seven doing this kind of work. That number surprised me.

Article says "13 people on board- the pilot, the co-pilot, an attendant and 10 passengers."

The news keeps getting worse I’m afraid. The original article has been updated. How tragic...

“Troopers reported that some of the victims were injured beyond recognition.

Windsor Locks first selectman Chris Kervick confirmed that 13 people in all were aboard the plane. Three were crew members and 10 were passengers.”

If some passengers got out, than it is near a miracle. The front half to 2/3 are crashed at a tank and have been reduced to a burnt out pile of rubble, the rest of the fuselage is burnt out. The cockpit crew will not have survived.

Rest in peace and I hope, all injured will recover fast. Refer to video and photo in link.

EDIT:
At least 15 people were on board. 6 have been transferred to a hospital, at least three are confirmed dead.

The Flightaware trajectory suggests the aircraft never really gained speed or altitude immediately after take off and an immediate return to the airfield was initiated.

One on the ground seems to have been injured. Seems 13 have been on the plane, 3 crew and ten passengers. Some (6?) have been received at a hospital. I hope that is all, not that some more on the ground have ended in this burnt out pile of rubble at the deicing tank. RIP.

This is the second crash landing for this aircraft. In 1987 it overshot a runway near Pittsburgh and went over a steep embankment:

I believe there are maybe as many as 13 airworthy today, worldwide. Plus some under restoration.

I paid for a ride on the Madras Maiden 2 years ago. 2 pilots, 1 guy to show us the what to dos and what nots and 10 passengers. 1 guy got a free ride, he was 92 and on his last mission in a B 17 he was shot down and held at pow camp for a year. Great guy, so happy when we landed, he said I finally got to make a last landing.

I flew on "Nine-o-Nine" just three weeks ago out of BVY. I also toured it during their stop at ORH. My layman's observation was that at BVY they were pouring oil into the #1 engine by the gallon prior to my flight, and at ORH the #2 engine was dripping oil all over the tarmac. (Before you jump down my throat, again, this is my observation as a nontechnical enthusiast.)

During the flight, there were two pilots in the cockpit, a Collings Foundation handler standing behind the cockpit, 3 pax in the radio room and 7 pax in the back. Everyone was belted in. Seats in the back were essentially a pad on the floor with a seat belt.

RIP to the lives lost. A little freaky to think that it could have been me.

Perhaps its too soon to determine, but was there any observations of why it failed to gain altitude, ie: engine failure, control service failure ?

I ran the FBO at VSF for two years, 1998-2000. I hosted the Collings Foundation both years (they had just the B-17 and B-24 then) and I am pretty sure that this was the B-17. They offered me a free ride in return on a ferry flight, and so I got to ride the B-17 from CON to VSF. I was thrilled to have the opportunity. So sad that this plane is gone, and so tragic that lives were lost.

According up to date CNN World live ticker, 14 have been injured, 6 are at Hartford hospital of them 3 critical, 2 moderate and one minor. There are fatalities.
Sorry, but these numbers of 14 injured do not fit. Either these numbers are wrong or many people on the ground have been hurt. There are other numbers of 13 on board and 1 on ground, these are also 14. two or three minimum shall be dead. Seems someone has mixed numbers.

Not to say it will happen, but as long as they find the dataplate, the plane can be rebuilt (again). Its unfortunate that people got hurt in the crash. Airplanes are replaceable, lives are not.

Because the plane crashed at an airport while landing?

“ State police said that the pilot was attempting to make a landing on one of the runways when the B-17 aircraft crashed. “

First off, my thoughts and prayers with those who are injured and the families of those deceased.

As someone who had BDL as my home airport for 7 years, this is a stinger.

I do want to mention the commercial aviation aspect of this. There have been diversions/cancellations. List is below
AA:
2002 CLTBDL XLD
819 CLTBDL Diverted - PVD (Return ran from PVD) https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL819/history/20191002/1330Z/KCLT/KPVD https://flightaware.com/live/flight/AAL819/history/20191002/1715Z/KPVD/KCLT

DL had a flight on the ground to DTW at the time, it has since departed

UA:
2338 IADBDL XLD
5727 ORDBDL XLD
556 ORDBDL XLD

533 BDLTPA delayed but still scheduled for BDL-TPA (this is the turnaround of 438)

E!:
130/131 to/from DUB operating as scheduled

From a purely operational standpoint, this might have been the best day possible for this to happen - not a lot of flights in/out of BDL on Wednesday's this time of year.

Sad to see, the plane has survived 3 nuke explosions, one crash landing and now it is gone.

Terrible and sad for both those involved and to lose a piece of history. Was that the same B-17 the air heritage museum restored at beaver county airport? I’m assuming that is also where it over ran the runway?

Additionally, local news here reported that there were currently 18 still flying. Not sure how accurate that number is. Seems like there may also be a push now to enact stricter regulations on vintage airframes flying in this manner.

Yes it is the same aircraft and the 1987 incident was at BVI (Beaver Co, PA).

Haven't seen the question asked, but you think FAA grounds the B-17 fleet until it figures out what went wrong?

Of could they ban paid pax flights until the cause of the crash is known?

I don't have the exact number left after today, but a promo piece about the Wings of Freedom Tour from a couple of years ago said there were only 8 B-17s left in flying condition at that time (including this one). I know another one was lost when it was ditched in a field a couple of years ago after (I believe) fuel system trouble of some kind, plus this one today, so that means really only 6 or 7 examples left at most.

My condolences to those lost and injured today. So sad.

Forgive me if this is off topic, but piecing together what I heard from the ATC recordings and what I can tell about BDL, it looks like this might have happened quite close to the fuel depot? Is there any precedent for an aircraft crashing into a fuel depot?

Also in the ATC recording, the indicated reason for returning to the airport was an issue with the #4 engine.

Also in the ATC recording, the indicated reason for returning to the airport was an issue with the #4 engine.

It hit the deice tanks and 3 deicers. Fuel is close to it for sure, but the glycol tanks were the primary victim.

First frost tonight too. Oh boy...

If you read down in the comments, there is a lot of plane/tower transmissions missing in that video summary.

Not sure why CNN is characterizing this incident as a 'crash landing'... strange as usual.

It crashed WHILE landing, which is an altogether different thing for the informed...which media people never are.

Damn, that's really sad. I saw this plane at New Smyrna Beach, FL while on holiday last year. I had a look round a few hangars and saw a bunch of old guys sat in lawn chairs in front of one hangar. Five minutes later, this beauty arrived. Happy days.

Press conference underway now. The B17 hit an ILS stanchion at the end of Runway 6 and veered into the de-ice area.

(I live nearby. She flew over my place at maybe 200 feet AGL as she was trying to make the turn to a very short final.)

The death toll is rising. Now 7 dead. And I have to say, it is a miracle, that so many survived and not all died.

As an aviation fan but also a history nut, I find it tragic on two accounts. The obvious is the loss of life, the other is a history piece of history gone forever. As a youth a family friend died in a crash in his P-51D that was flow in WWII by the legendary Robin Olds. After that incident I slowly began to question the practice of flying antique war machines. These planes were rushed into service for war, they were dangerous back then and even so today. We as a society cannot disturb historic sites or buildings. But classic aircraft from an important era of human history are slowly becoming piles of debris.

I love flying, but in modern aircraft. There is also inherent risk anytime you fly, but these incidents are extra sad. I am all for keeping them in a running condition where they can be taxied and engines run up, but flying them is risking both human life and hard and distinct connections to our history.

I bet I am going to catch a lot of flak for this post. But nonetheless it’s tragic, RIP to the lost

I used to volunteer at the old Planes Of Fame museum at Flying Cloud airport in Minnesota. This aircraft was included in one of the last big shows they put on before the museum was closed and moved to Palm Springs.

One of the plane's pilots personally gave me a private tour of her. I remember, as I sat in the pilot's seat, just how cramped it was in the cockpit. My Cruze has more room than that plane had. It was a great day for me.

B-17s were the aircraft that made me fall in love with aviation.

RIP to all those lost, and heartfelt condolences to their families and friends.

A sad day for sure.

So very sad for everyone involved. RIP to the ones who didn’t make it.
Just last week Yankee Lady from Willow Run Airport flew over our apartments pretty low (we’re just 30 minutes from the airport) while my wife and I were walking our dog and I couldn’t stop talking about it. Selfishly I was worried it had gone down when I saw the news since I know there are only a few flying. One of these days I’ll get a ride in it.
I hope the injured recover quickly and maybe if we’re lucky the aircraft can be rebuilt
