With wind up to 166KM/100 MPH... not many things can stay upright in those winds....

Well the winds aren't that high. 40-55 mph right now

Sounds reasonable. If Wizz chose to rent buses to KEF, then they might wait days or a week until buses were available. It's not like Wizz was the only or first airline to divert to EGS, and in a country that small the available resources are limited.
It's a 12 hr bus drive each way if weather doesn't interfere seriously.
And how would they accommodate the pax while waiting for a bus? In my country they could rent tents from military, but Iceland has no military. Forget about hotels for hundreds of people anywhere near EGS. Simply not there.
Just be happy that everybody landed safely and will have another chance from Krakow to KEF. That's much faster and much more comfortable.
The town Egilstadir is mostly an Alcoa aluminum factory, and it has 2,306 inhabitants (2016). In addition it is rather unique in Iceland for having a rather flat and non-volcanic area which quite easily could be made into a diversion runway for the only international airport KEF. Being placed in the opposite end of the country it will most often have useable weather when KEF is closed.
