Aeroflot Cancels 787 Order, Cut in Production Rate?

Wed Oct 09, 2019 10:29 pm

Logical backlash from declining relationship with Russia. "Dozens of unsold 787s"???

The cancellation, first reported by the Seattle Times and buried in Boeing’s monthly order release, is the final step in unwinding an order that had been shrouded in uncertainty ever since the airline said in 2015 it no longer needed the planes.

But the lost business theoretically knocks a hole in the production profile for the 787 Dreamliner after the world’s largest planemaker increased its build-rate to 14 aircraft per month from 12 at twin U.S. factories.

Barring new orders, Boeing faces the growing possibility that it may have to cut production back by 2022, industry sources say, piling on new pressure as the grounding of the smaller 737 MAX stretches into its eighth month.

One of the sources, who closely monitors Boeing’s production plans, said the planemaker has dozens of unsold or potentially vacant 787 positions on its production line in 2022.

Sooooo, wait a second...

The cancellation, first reported by the Seattle Times and buried in Boeing’s monthly order release, is the final step in unwinding an order that had been shrouded in uncertainty ever since the airline said in 2015 it no longer needed the planes.

Wouldn't that mean if the order was already canceled 3 years ago that it would NOT be part of Boeing's production increased production rate? Since, you know, the aircraft would not have been started to be produced for that carrier?
Or is that me just using sensical thinking.

While we're on the topic, (not to hijack the thread) what is the actual hard production time in factory from stem to stern for the 787?

With the long lead time between orders and deliveries, I suspect there are a number of orders that have essentially been canceled but are still on the books. I think this would be true for almost all production lines, not just the 787.

Pretty sure that if they knew since 2015 that they weren't going to be delivering the planes, the probably planned for it. If nothing else, this just highlights how after the initial drama, these things just keep coming out of the factories and happily flying around without much fanfare. It's a little-surprising how many there are out there, perhaps influenced by the face that a lot of frames were from the beginning going to airlines other than US ones.

So the production rate 3 years from now is threatened because an order for less than 2 months production was cancelled 4 years ago? Seems a bit alarmist...

Ultimately the production rate will have to drop at some point. They've already almost built more 787s than they built 767s and the order books are approaching 777 numbers. They'll run out of customers at some point.

I think this Russia order has been in doubt for a while, doubt Boeing built it into their models. Russia is not doing well on the economic side. A and B are not focusing on there to carry their programs. But the Reuters article "Barring new orders, Boeing faces the growing possibility that it may have to cut production".... and? Every manufacturer of every product faces cutting production 'barring" new orders.
