Boeing will deliver the 900th 787 in October 2019

Sun Oct 13, 2019 12:55 pm

It seems Boeing will deliver the nine hundredth 787 this month.

Does anyone know the following:
  • which model serial?
  • from Seattle or Charleston?
  • which airline will take delivery of the 900th 787

Obviously we can expect the one thousandth delivery will happen next year.

Gees can't believe this has happened so fast, so is this not a record for a widebody.

Funny thing is that we know who'll get the 1000th frame (Hint: they already operate the 10,000 airbus ever built).

As there were 12 deliveries last month, taking the total to 894 deliveries, I would expect #900 this week.

13. Sep. 2019 787-9 GE Etihad Airways United Arab Emirates Middle East
13. Sep. 2019 787-9 GE Turkish Airlines Turkey Europe
15. Sep. 2019 787-9 RR Air Lease Corporation USA North America
17. Sep. 2019 787-9 RR International Lease Finance Co USA North America
23. Sep. 2019 787-9 GE China Southern Airlines China East Asia
25. Sep. 2019 787-9 GE Business Jet / VIP Customer(s) USA North America

900 delivered , another 550 in backlog ,
and the renewal cycle of the 777 and 330 has not even started yet
the 787 will easily sell another 1000-2000 unit before another clean sheet widebody get launched

The 1000th built will be for Singapore Airlines. Not sure if it will be 1000th delivered though. This will reinforce how important SQ is as one of Boeing's customer. SQ previously took the 1000th B747 built as well.

Interesting.

So it will be a 787-10 with Trent 1000 engines delivered from Charleston.

It is amazing to think that the 787 reached this milestone faster than even the A320, if we start counting from first flight.

I would hazard a guess of around 20 or 30 at most, given that majority of the 787s were not affected by RR's engine troubles.

If you want to compare a similar time in aviation, the A320neo family did 1000 frames delivered this month.

Not quite similar though, a cleansheet vs re-engine are really two different phases in an aircraft's product lifecycle. Plus, a widebody matching a narrowbody in a similar timeframe within the product lifecycle is a great achievement by itself.

A great achievement by Boeing. But not sustainable in the long term.

What does "not sustainable in the long term" mean?

Nine hundred is nine hundred, I think they are just half way through the program.

There are still 550 in the backlog and most probably there are some options that will be firmed.

Why is this continually brought up when Boeing offered options on unusually short commit times?

Production is sold out 2020 and 2021, so all long lead production items are at nominal production. 2023 has an incredibly healthy backlog for that long out. Boeing has to keep an unusual number of slots open for options in 2022. Due to initial production issues, there was a log jam of options.

Considering the backlog and the positive cash flow of $30 million per 787 for Boeing, I won't be worrying about Boeing selling. The worse case is the price war intensifies.

I believe 1,000 to 2,000 more will sell.

It will be nerve wracking clearing the current options. How much of a discount would be required to have the final pax 767s replaced with 788? My little spreadsheet says we'll within Boeing's ability to discount.

At least another 1,000.

Boeing probably has a good feel on what options will be exercised, they are staying with rate 14 for now. But I suspect that this rate will start to drop around 2024. But still 100 sales a year. Now that it is in service I think the 787-10 will pick up a big chunk of those.

As the world's large fleet of 777-200ER gets retired and A330 are retired too, the 787 will pick up many orders.

Can 787-10 be a 777-200ER replacement?

Maybe with an increase in MTOW to allow more fuel? They are pretty close sans the 787-10 has ~450nm shorter range. I'd think the 787-9 can fill the 777-200ER role?

It very much depends on what role the 77E is being used. There are plenty of carriers who don’t use the 77E anywhere near its full potential (they just bought it because in the late 90s/early 00s what other Boeing would you buy if you wanted something larger than a 767?) in which the current 787-10 can easily replace most if not all of the fleet.

I'd say, even more of an achievement to sell "older tech" at that rate. Also, why does it have to be an Airbus vs Boeing thing? Why not compare to the 767 or 747? I guess some can't help themselves.

For most missions. UA, NZ, BA. KE, BA, and SQ all are replacing them with 787-10.

The real opportunity is the A333 replacement wave and growth.

The 787-10 does need more range. For ANZ some PiP of unspecific term is happening. I fully expect GE to PiP the engines.

Nothing to do with A vs B, the A320 was the closest example to such a production rate at the same stage of the program.

We also need to start looking at the 78u replacement cycle from 2021/3 I see the earlier overweight models being replaced earlier, will not be surprised to see 787 8 orders

Or ‘who’ goes out of business next with a 787 fleet.
