FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

So it looks like AA is cutting ISP to PHL to near nothing. 1-2 a day is not a good sign, unless they are replacing it with DCA or CLT...if they leave, no major service to ISP. Just WN and F9, and I would never ever fly F9....

AN is Advanced Air and seems doing Texas-Taos,NM ski service. They use King Air 350 for their EAS service into Silver City, NM; but doubt they would use that for this. Last year was flown with 328jet, iirc, but by some other provider.

AN is Advanced Air. It is taking over the Taos Air services which were operated by Ultimate Air earlier this year (scheduled charter). It also operates all of the flights for Surf Air; it appears that some of those flights have spilled into the OAG.

AN AUS-TSM DEC 0>0.2[0] JAN 0>0.5[0] FEB 0>0.4[0] MAR 0>0.4[0]
AN DAL-TSM DEC 0>0.2[0] JAN 0>0.5[0] FEB 0>0.4[0] MAR 0>0.4[0]
AN HHR-SQL NOV 0>0.4[1.6]
AN OAK-SBA NOV 0>0.2[1.6]

Taos Air is dropping Ultimate Jet Charter for their sub-service and going with Advanced Air Charters I guess that means switch from FRJ Dornier Jet to a King Air from AUS and Dallas to Taos

Good to see continued commitment to SAF-PHX by AA.

And UA 2x daily on DEN-HNL next summer!

AA adding ISP-ORD or ISP-DFW is a possibility as AA already serves both of these hubs nonstop from other destinations in the Northeast.

DL adding ISP-ATL, ISP-BOS, and ISP-DTW are also possibilities as DL already serves other secondary commercial airports such as BUR, MDW, DAL, HOU, LGB, SWF, PHF, OAK, ONT, SNA, SJC, HPN, and ORH.

I truthfully don’t understand everyone’s obsession over ISP. Why does AA have to add ISP from other hubs?

DFW-SYR isn’t even served, yet SYR has AA service from 4 different hubs in addition to BOS.

Air Transat showing SAN-YUL service was discovered on the TS website a few days ago and has been discussed a bit; no press release has been issued so far to anyone's knowledge.

According to the website's schedules, they will be using 738s and A321s on the 3x-weekly flights. Seasonal or year-round is unknown.

It will be interesting to see if this route actually begins next June. I hope it does!

Didn’t WN go 2x/daily on that route? If so, they ran AS off that route.

AS SAN-SLC MAY 2>1.0[1.0] JUN 2>1.0[1.0] JUL 2>1.0[1.0]

Interesting. I assume the SJC-Vegas flight is for the annual electronics show as that is not a regular route of AS.

Also, SAN-SLC was just increased last Sunday to daily-double service for most of 2020 (Feb thru July) and this week AS is backing it off. Someone at Route Planning in SEA got a little overzealous on their keyboard I guess.

Likewise, SJC-TUS last week showed a decrease in the route but it was still there at least; this week, it's gone completely...

A little random, but building on the F9 extension. Does anybody know if they will bring den-sdf back? They’re dropping it (seasonally?) in December and flying den-mco through this extension. This year they flew den-sdf every month. Is f9 exiting sdf entirely?

I believe it is, this past summer was the first year of two 777s (HNL and OGG). They are still both showing in the schedule in addition to a new 757 on the HNL route earlier in the morning.

Shows the power of the DEN hub. If I had to connect to Hawaii I’d probably choose DEN over SFO or LAX.

Yes, SJC-LAS is for CES. 8 flights over 5 days. I think SJC-TUS was cut with the other announcements last week and there might have been an error in filing.

Yet... American only serves it from PHL, which is now being reduced.

Both UA and DL don't even serve the airport. It's just Southwest/Frontier.

The FAA and Port Authority need to step in and seize the excess slots from AA at JFK

This isn’t right any longer

Beyond the BS runway excuse

Other airlines want those slots and they are stifling competition

Just shed the slots, go down to 60 or so flights and call it a day

JFK really is handicapped on capacity right now. Any kind of weather event brings the airport into a halt.

That can be said about any NY area airport...it's more so the airspace, not the airport.

I would guess Max related - they can always add back into the schedule but its a lot more challenging to take out after tickets have been sold. Probably being careful not to over promise during Spring Break period.

Can't believe that AA will be down to 2x daily SEA-ORD...it seems like they used to run 4-5 flights per day on that route. Meanwhile, AS has grown to 5x daily.

Just shed the slots, go down to 60 or so flights and call it a day

There are actually a few more domestic routes that could be added by B6 out of JFK such as JFK-CLE, JFK-DFW, JFK-DTW, JFK-MSP, and JFK-BNA if B6 can acquire extra slots at JFK.

As I posted in the JetBlue thread, AA is down about 10% in yield relative to DL/B6 in the past 2 years and 7% in just the past year. That shows how much their pricing power in NYC has slid. The slide that started when they started cutting at JFK has really picked up the pace the past year. And their pricing power will keep sliding as important market like SEA/SAN/LAS have basically stopped flying in the past year. Not sure what's the point of keep YUL/YYZ/CLE/CMH/PIT/PHL around in their schedule if they continue to cut international flying and transcon. The idea that they can somehow wait 5 years for A321XLR to turn things around is extremely optimistic.

I do wonder how long is AA going to be able to keep these JFK slots. I'm sure they can still sell those for value. The MAX grounding is just an excuse. There is no reason for them to keep some of these routes going if they schedule them and then cut them for many months.

Also including LGA here, because the next phase of cuts will be there. Without the ff, those LGA slots are going to really hemorrage

Really surprised that AA is cutting so much from SEA. No more JFK, which during the busy season was 2-3 daily, PHX is going down to 2 daily, which was 6-7 not too long ago. PHL, has 3-4 daily during busy season. The only AA hub that doesn't see a reduction is CLT and LAX. Wonder if DL and AS will backfill some of this, especially MIA/FLL and PHX?

UA going 4>2 on BDL-ORD is rough, especially after they've already cut BDL-EWR completely.

AA is still facing a plane shortage in its mainline narrowbody fleet since AA had retired its last MD-80's last month in addition to the 737 MAX not yet back in service.

Good comments.

I agree with everybody on AA JFK slots. This is a total scam that they can block these slots from competitors. Port of NY needs to tell them MAR1 they fly the slots or lose them. ...at the risk of being told I always attack AA! Lol. I don’t think I’ve been accused of that one yet.

Thanks to everybody on the AN explanation.

Spirit did do some cuts a week or two ago, so I suppose that was part of the funding here.

In addition to AA reducing frequencies on DFW-SEA, WN is also reducing DAL-SEA nonstop service from year-round to seasonal starting in January 2020.

DL re-adding DFW-SEA nonstop service is a possibility as DFW is one of the top destinations that DL doesn't currently serve nonstop from its SEA hub. Other individuals have also said in the Airliners.net forums that DL still has a FF base in the DFW area, even though DFW had been dehubbed by DL almost 15 years ago.

Do you realize how densely populated Long Island is compared to the area surrounding Syracuse. There's no comparison.

Yet... American only serves it from PHL, which is now being reduced.

Both UA and DL don't even serve the airport. It's just Southwest/Frontier.

AA has had fluctuation on the route for a while. DL used to fly to ATL and CVG in the mid-2000s with CR7s to ATL and a mix of CRJs and CR7s to CVG, not to mention DL Express flew to MCO and FLL before Song. AA flew to ORD, CO flew to CLE, and ALB and WN was a power house there. There is a market there, and frankly DL was quite large at JFK and LGA back during this time as well. It's the only NYC area airport that doesn't see DL.

It's a legit reason because of the MAX. It may be a convenient reason to trim the weakest flights when forced to cut capacity due to loss of aircraft, but something has to give when dozens of aircraft are out of service. Do you really expect them to cut at DFW, ORD, MIA, PHL, CLT, LAX, etc. instead?

I would to like to see someone try to force AA to give up JFK slots when the have the MAX reasoning to fall back on. Good luck with that one.

They got special exemption for the runway issue. All that has done is leading them to cut more flights and become even less competitive in NYC. They are not getting any more exemption so they better use the slots or lose them.

There are actually a few more domestic nonstop routes such as JFK-BHM, JFK-MCI, JFK-SDF, JFK-MKE, JFK-SMF, and JFK-STL that could be added by DL if DL can acquire extra slots at JFK.
