Qantas reveals 100th anniversary special livery on 787-9

Mon Oct 14, 2019 8:32 am

Qantas will reveal a special livery on another 787-9 tomorrow. 787-9 VH-ZNJ will be the second 787-9 to feature a special livery, the first being VH-ZND

Looks like perhaps a mix of retro and something to mark the 100th anniversary of Qantas next year

Man, A QANTAS Retro scheme would look fantastic, is it just me, or is it only the dreamliners that can pull off retro colour schemes really well

I would say it’s a 100 years livery like the KLM and not along the British airways way

Would love to see a 1970's TAA blue livery on a 787 I know it wont be that but it would look so cool.

A second 787-9 in special livery is nice, an additional order for another 10 787 would be better. What is going to replace the soon to be dumped too soon 744ER fleet ? The wish of flying from Perth to CDG & FRA is nice, not the only 787 Qantas need.

Presumably the winner of Project Sunrise, which will probably be the A350. The 787-9 will likely take over some of the lower end flying as well.

When LY went retro with the Dreamliner they didn't went 1970s retro, they went 1960s so this why I think we can be optimistic about it.

Would be far better suited to a 717. If you're going to have the T-Jet livery, it has to be on a T tailed aircraft. There was a reason they changed the name and livery when the A300 arrived.

The 787s on order are replacing the 747s one-for-one.

Until they make a decision on the PS aircraft, or indeed on whether the project goes ahead, it's unlikely they will order more 787s as the aircraft chosen will have flow on effects to their broader fleet strategy.

And PER-CDG/FRA aren't going to happen anytime soon as Qantas is still in their dispute with Perth Airport. They're not going to launch any new international routes from Perth until they have resolved that.

Did a bit of digging with the only concrete picture of that tweet which is the Qantas logo with the wings. Seems like they're using the first ever logo that Qantas adopted in 1930 before they merged with Imperial Airways. They're probably doing a modern interpretation of the Iris livery on the DH50s? That's going to be my bet.

Qantas Limited Airways livery from 1947.

I'm not sure if this is to do with this announcement but last month when I was in Australia I went to the HARS museum. A very chatty guy was telling me all about the super connie there. He told me that photos were fine inside except in the first class section which had been recently 'spruced up' and that Qantas was coming in to do some kind of promotional photo shoot. There was, what I believe was, a Qantas Airways Limited logo from 1947.

So maybe the livery revolves around that time period?
As of Dec 2018 I've flown 417,862 miles on 250 flights on 51 airplane types with 55 airlines traveling thru 97 airports in 43 countries. I've visited 59 countries. 2019 is looking like a pretty decent year for me.

This seems logical. A recent Facebook post by Qantas acknowledged the anniversary of the first Constellation delivery in 1947. The first London flight was on 1 December 1947.

A 1947 inspired livery creates a nice linkage with those first Constellation services and Project Sunrise.

Looks good but they need another retro. I think it's time to do up An A332 in the last 1980s TAA livery. The 332 is similar enough in
size to the A300B4 we know it would be pretty easy to work. And then yes, Take one of the 717s and stick it in the blue and gold TAA livery,
or a 737 in the Australian livery. If BA can do both BOAX and BEA I see no reason why QF can't do that. Americans doing it with
its part carriers like TWA.

True Dat, and the BOAC livery on the 744, although I still think the BOAC would look nice on the dreamliner

I absolutely love it, as I knew I would. I do hold out some hope that one day they might revisit Wunala, Nalanji and Water Dreaming for the A380 or 787. Iconic.

It's a nice livery but it looks a little too cluttered, I would much prefer if the big 100 was smaller and placed under the Qantas titles, similar to the old livery VH-QPA used to wear back in 2015.

What I do like, however, is the historic logos, extended red underbelly and the name "Longreach".

Was that a full paint though, or just a sticker?

Presumably this aircraft will wear the livery for many years, possibly why it also has the Towards 2120 tag.
Looking forward to see the underside

I think it is a safe bet to assume that "Towards 2120" will be the motto for the centenary celebration (i.e. "look at what we did in our first hundred years; think what will happen in our next!") as opposed to an expectation of how long this particular frame will stay in the fleet...

I like the vibrant red underside of the livery trimming in to the wing but agree, think they could have done a bit more with a roo bouncing/morphing along the frame in to the different roo shapes in line with the logo changes. But apparently a “collect the set” sticker collection is what they come up with.

It’s not terrible, but it’s certainly not up to the standard QF usually delivers. It just looks a bit cheap!

Don’t take me wrong, but there is something insignificant that I do not like: the stylized kangaroo inside the zero. This is the universal sign of « forbidden » isn’t it? Such an occasion deserved a much better livery...

If I'm not mistaken, the last specific aircraft that was named Longreach (excluding the overall 747-438 fleet of course) was 747-238B, VH-EBS, until 1990 when it was renamed Broken Hill.

Makes me think of Air Berlin with the way the red is shaped.

Would have nice I think to have had say 5 or 737s done in different schemes through the ages (obviously have 2 distinctive ones already) but hard to know if the average passenger would notice. A silver QEA would have been interesting I think.

Fitting that they would apply the Longreach name to a 787, when the fleet flies the longest route they've ever flown.

The 787-9 is not getting old for me even with almost 1000 787s produced. It remains a beautiful aircraft and this livery looks great on it.

The red wave on the belly is a bit reminiscent of the wave in the Boeing house livery.

Okay, yeah, so without the 100 that should be the new livery for all aircraft. Not sure what the A380 would look like, though.

Definitely think the red belly should be incorporated into the rest of the fleet. Looks phenomenal, though the whale may not look so great.

I agree that it's underwhelming.
From a livery perspective it's not bad. With that said, QF has had some unique and impressive designs in the past, not least including Wunala Dreaming which has perhaps inflated my expectations.
The design for whatever reason seems to remind me of Shanghai Airlines.

It just doesn't work. There is too much going on. There's the 100, there's the swirl, there's all the logos (that look like a bad stamp collection) and then there is all the text at the back. Someone didn't know where to stop.

Combination of Shanghai Airlines with the curve and former Air Berlin which had the all red bottom.

The 100th and logos are appropriate, and the extra red differentiates it.

The Time Capsule and Towards 2120 seems a bit unnecessary, although being a paint rather than sticker maybe it will keep it relevant in 2025.

The qantas.com/100 just goes to the normal homepage at present.

Still not clear what's on the underbelly. Is it just Qantas in white font, or perhaps another Roo?
