JFK-MAN in 5 hours 20 minutes on VS B747?!

Tue Oct 15, 2019 12:18 pm

I was looking at the flight history for VS128 from JFK to MAN and some of the flights take as little as 5 hours 20 minutes according to this website:

https://www.flightradar24.com/data/flights/vs128

Is that right?? Appreciate that that is flying time, not block time, and the B747 is a fast aircraft, but still. Is it really possible?

Thanks

Yes. With strong tailwinds.

Would need a GS of 560kts / 1000 km/h if you consider 3000NM (2900 great circle) distance. Absolutely no problem with a bit of jetstream. You can do that in a CRJ, if necessary. The speed, not the distance ;-)

Absolutely possible, and a recipe for miserable jet lag, since by the time dinner service is done (2hrs) you have about an hour of shut-eye before breakfast service begins...

Thanks. Anyone know what the quickest time is for a commercial aircraft to fly from NYC to LON and/or MAN?

Very funny. I meant subsonic aircraft!

I believe a Norwegian 787 still holds the subsonic record for the route. 5 hrs 13 minutes.

It can happen every now and then. I had a flight on KL ORD-AMS last year which made it gate-to-gate in just over 7 hours. We were booking it across the Atlantic due to tailwinds.

I found an article saying a DY 787-9 did JFK-LGW in 5 hours 13 minutes. This got them to Gatwick 53 minutes ahead of schedule!

5 hours 13 mins - wow! This was a daytime flight which I think I'd prefer if it was this short, rather than getting barely any sleep on a red-eye.

The Convair 990A I sort of assumed would hold this record, but I guess Swiss/AA didn't operate the route back then. Interesting video. It burned around 15K pounds an hour to go that extra 50 mph vs. the 707 and DC8.

Not a popular opinion I guess, but breakfast should not be offered on TATL flights less than 7hrs block time

Why? to maximize sleep time or minimize jet lag.

Although you tell FA's you don't want to be woken up for breakfast once the serve starts I always get woken up with all the mess/noise going around in the cabin.

Many years ago, I clocked JFK-MAN in just under 5 hours 20 min wheels up to wheels down, and that was on a BA 763, so it is definitely possible. I would imagine it is also possible to shave a few minutes off that kind of time with a B744 and the right kind of tailwind!
To put it all in perspective, DL 693 last night (JFK-SLC) took just over 5 hours, and that's a distance 1,350 miles shorter than JFK-MAN!

747s have always been fast. Compare to a 767 or A330, for example. We've known about TATL jetstream winds since WWII bombing runs. Put the two together and you can get some quick eastbound crossings.

There is a breakfast on TATL flights thread at the moment. Might be nice to read!

Quickest I done was JFK-DUB on an Aer Lingus A330-300 a couple of years ago flight time was just 5hrs 10 mins!

I did PHL-SNN in 5 hours 9 mins on a B757 in the month of May. A smooth serene flight, and the after dinner dark cabin/rest time/shut eye lasted only 90 minutes until lights on for the coffee and breakfast service.

Man I hate when redeyes get nice tailwinds. The one time I wouldn't mind a slightly extended flying time.

Even worse when its US Transcon

Many ears ago on Swissair we did 5:40 JFK-ZRH and one of the crew stated their record for the route was actually 5:20. That is moving right along with big winds helping.

I never like tailwinds. I love headwinds, holding patterns and go-arounds. They mean more quality time in the air. I was really disappointed when one of KLM’s Boeing 747’s needed just 09:35 hours to get me from Amsterdam to San Francisco.

I fly yul to lhr or lgw twice yearly. Sometimes we've done that in 5 hours. I remember a particularly fast flight on a thomas cook 757 (canadian affair)

My most insane version of this is being upset that the three times I've flown SQ 21/22 I've had below average flying times. I want my damn 19 hours.

In March 2015, I made it from MCO - LGW in just 6 hrs 28 mins. I even heard the cabin crew discussing the short flight in the galley. They were happy to be getting home early. This was on a BA 772. I was thrilled, as I absolutely hate overnight flights with a burning passion. I can't sleep on planes, so the shorter the flight the better. The downside? The entire flight was constantly bumpy from take off to touchdown. Nothing major, just constant shaking and shuddering. Impossible to rest.

Why is the highest speed airliners typically reach on their own around Mach 0.80-0.85?

Could it be pushed higher using existing engines? Would it be perhaps less economical or would it not be even feasible?

I understand the appeal of supersonic travel but that seems to have bad economics no matter what. However, saving 1-2 hours on an ultra-long-haul flight could make quite a difference to passengers, aside from increasing aircraft utilization.

I flew LHR-JFK yesterday. We departed the gate on time, had a 10 minute taxi, and arrived at JFK a full 45 minutes ahead of schedule. Pilot said we had minimal head winds on a significant portion of the crossing.

The issue is anything over .85 or so to 1.2 is going to create so much drag that the amount of thrust you're going to need to sustain speeds like that will require way more fuel.

The 747 is FAST. I would regularly fly DTW-AMS and ATL-AMS regularly at 6hrs. A few times I had 700-720kts ground speeds across the pacific on some Seoul-DTW flights at .90mach. Great plane, easy to land, great on the eyes and just fun. I miss flying it..
