Virgin Atantic to join AF/KL - China Eastern JV

Wed Oct 16, 2019 6:01 pm

On the 20th anniversary of Virgin service to Shanghai, the airline announced its intention to join the joint venture between China Eastern and the Air France-KLM group.

Virgin wants to codeshare on China Eastern services between London and Shanghai from spring 2020.

On the proposed joint venture with China Eastern and Air France-KLM, Virgin Atlantic COO Juha Jarvinen commented: “Our announcement today … truly emphasises our commitment to China and our growing portfolio in the Far East. The move clearly reflects our mission to offer our customers enhanced connectivity and choice by working with the best partners in the business."

Patrick Alexandre, head of commercial, sales and alliances at Air France-KLM, said: “We are very proud of the partnership we have built over the past two decades with China Eastern, we look forward to welcoming on board Virgin Atlantic. By combining our offers, we will create an even more attractive commercial proposition for customers."

Just to add to the tangled 'mess' of relationships that exist among VS, MU, BA and CA between LHR and PVG (and beyond) today!

Currently, BA codeshares with MU on domestic UK and domestic China routes but not on LHR-PVG. I believe CA also has a codeshare with VS between LHR and PVG (though that looks like it has been zeroed out going forward). This VS-MU JV and codesharing proposal seems to only cover LHR-PVG for now and VS hasn't announced any codesharing on MU for beyond-PVG flights...we could end up with a situation where MU-VS share LHR-PVG while MU continues to use BA for LHR-domestic UK codeshares and BA uses MU for PVG-domestic China codeshares...

Codeshares and Joint ventures are two different animals.

What you’re seeing is the formation of a global airline group.

Delta/Aeromexico/LATAM/WestJet/Air France-KLM/Virgin/China Eastern/Korean/Virgin Australia and perhaps AZ (we’ll see how that one plays out).

Missing link at this point is an open skies agreement between the U.S. and China to facilitate a Delta/ChinaEastern JV.

Considering the fact that MU owns 9% of AFKL which in turns owns 31% in VS that'd just be a mess.

As BA has more recently been expanding its codeshares with China Southern (CZ) maybe they will just dump any remaining codeshares with MU once VS gets involved in the AF/KL/MU jv.

Regarding this, I have noticed that Oneworld does not have any notable joint ventures/partnerships in the Europe–China market. Star Alliance has LH/OS/LX/CA, SkyTeam has AF/KL/MU (+ possibly VS) and AF/KL/CZ/MF. Might we see AY/BA/IB/CZ joint venture in the near future and perhaps CZ ending the JV with AF/KL? As far as I know, CZ is studying the possibility of forming a JV with BA while AY wants to deepen its partnership with CZ.
