Ethiad Airways a350 and Avianca A330 stored in BOD

Sat Oct 19, 2019 11:06 am

Hey guys,

Quick question. Flying in and out of BOD in France, I noticed a apron full of new and old aircrafts. Actually there is at least tree Ethiad Airways a350, brand new, with protections on the windows, two Avianca a330, stored for quite some time, a white a340 and some older Caravelle and Dassault Mercure.

Why would Ethiad or Avianca store aircrafts in BOD?

Cheers

One of the Avianca aircraft will be going to Titan in the UK to replace a 767-300ER. In service for summer 2020.

Those frames are at least delivered to somebody, be it Etihad or a leasing company.

So Bordeaux act as a storage facility such as Mojave? Is there any particularly about the weather conditions in BOD that makes it special? Or just plenty of space available?

You're right, but the fact they are painted in EY's livery doesn't mean they are either owned or delivered to them.

There is Sabena Technics in BOD, a big MRO provider. That's where Airbus converted FrenchBee A350.

For the records, the Dassault Mercure belongs to an Aircraft Maintenance School, and inside the hangar there is also an old DC-9-21

Etihad is accepting and paying for 787 but refuses A350? Those Boeing corporate men must be armed and dangerous or something .

Well they already have a number of 787’s in the fleet so makes sense to carry on taking them at the present time.

With 0 A350s in fleet adding them involves large induction costs (got to train mechanics, pilots, cabin crew, buy various spares, etc) in addition to paying for the plane (which EY did, since it has been delivered). Adding additional 787s involves minimal additional costs over the cost of the airframe. Boeing just got lucky that they got frames in EY’s hands before their financial woes.

The A350s have not been paid for. If Airbus “delivered” them it was with an accounting shell game.

For Etihad, they are not in good financial at this time, so it’s A350 may need to be in storage. There is some HNA A350’s are also in storage mostly due to similar reasons as well. For Avianca, I bet this is the former Avianca Brazil A330 that is in storage after it stop flying.

The storage in France could be due to certain financial or tax factors for Airbus and operators.

btw, how about EYs A330-200s, are they scheduled for retirement this year? I remember to have read that somewhere, but cannot find more information...

Thanks,

EY said in a statement less than a month ago that they have taken delivery of two A350. Hence the other frame must belong to someone else.

I bet Airbus is grumbling about EY accepting 787 but not A350 straight from factory.

Back in February 2019, Etihad has made known to public that they would only take delivery of five A350, and 26 A321neos plus six Boeing 777-9s “over the coming years”. The balance of the remaining orders will be defined at a later time through rescheduling, restructuring or reduction. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-etih ... SKCN1Q30LC

Etihad Airways had at one time 26 A321neos, 40 A350-900s and 22 A350-1000s, as well as eight 777-8s and 17 777-9s on order. No way they can incorporate these many aircraft. Leasing firms and financial firms are not really keen to provide much liquidity for them, owing to their precarious financial situation.

Since then, Etihad Airways has cancelled 40 A350-900s and 2 A350-1000s, leaving only 20 A350-1000s. Of these 20 A350-1000s, they have taken delivery of 5.

As for B777-8 and B777-9, they have cancelled all but 6 B777-9.

Next to exit the fleet will be A380 and A332 once B777-9 delivery starts and more B787 gets delivered.

The A332 are much older than A333, the latter have since been retired, the 332 days are numbered by default.

They still have 12 B787-9 and 24 B787-10 to be delivered. 36 B787 is a huge financial commitment as well.

Etihad has not formaly cancelled any Boeing planes yet, so we cannot say anything on how many 777X and 787 they will take at the end of the day.

They have already delayed plenty of 787s over the last couple years, and future known delivery slots have now dried up. It's not likely that they will take all 36 they still have on order.

More have been flown to Teruel yesterday, 19.11.2019.

From what I can see, EY only actively flying 4 332s as of today.

I am wondering why those birds do not find a new owner quickly, as they are not that old?

Haha! One month ago you were correct! This week we've heard that they will still take the 777X and with mention of only 51 787 in total, they aren't likely to take all the 787 they ordered.

To be pedantic, Etihad only confirmed that they still have all their 77X “on order”. They didn’t confirm they would take delivery of them all. A subtle but potentially significant difference.

True, you make a valid point. Not really pedantic. your statement reflects the reality of the industry. So much changes so quickly that one cannot count on something being said today having any relevance at any point in the future.

So yes, for now, the 777X is still "on order".

Strangely, A6-EYD was ferried back today from Teruel to Abu Dhabi after nearly 1 year of storage.

Why would that be?

BOD doesn't have a particular climate no, nowhere in metropolitan France is very dry anyway. I guess it's just close to TLS, with cheap space available.

I confirm, Bordeaux is not really dry. Saw the brandnew Etihad A350's and the Avianca A330 last Friday, they were under huge rain and storm that fell on south western France last week.
