FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Yup, both HGR and FKL are being dropped from EAS. These two were among the poster-child examples dragged out again and again about why EAS should be killed. Hagerstown is about 70 minutes from Dulles and 75 minutes from BWI, Franklin is about 85 minutes from PIT. (Obviously traffic congestion can extend those drive times.) They are also among the lowest-boarding EAS stations in the lower 48 and are on the endangered list each time the DoT threatens. I've heard anecdotally that a fair amount of Hagerstown's skimpy traffic is actually people flying BWI-HGR-PIT for the cheap fare.

Personally I tend to be an EAS supporter though I think it should be fully overhauled with more flexibility, ability/requirement for local and state supplemental funding, etc. But I am kinda glad to see airports like this leave the system because they are such indefensible targets of EAS critics.

9X's BWI-AOO is doing well (for as good as EAS routes can do) isn't it?

Nice to see PHX-COS operate into the summer. I know when the flight was loaded for the winter it went in as a mainline, however, these extra frequencies I am assuming are on Regional?

AA missed a huge chance to jump in on AGP this summer. i'm confident they will in 2021 - this has been mentioned so many times as a potential seasonal route for them, and they have a big point of sale in Spain thanks to Iberia.

Looks like the ExpressJet E75s on MCI/JAX-ORD weren’t caught on this report, so that’s why the decreases.

Also looks like some more Hawaii decreases for AS in OAK-KOA/OGG...probably being squeezed by both HA and WN.

Looks like G4 is holding on any XNA growth this summer, if not just a hair of decreases, after last summer's seemingly beefed up schedule compared to prior years. VPS-XNA was running 2x daily on most weekends throughout July and August (I realize August isn't loaded yet).

EAS contract has been terminated for FKL and HGR due to low pax count and the related high cost (per pax). Although, HGR officials are disputing the EAS figures.

Many UA reductions don’t seem right. Seems that the report didn’t pick up the newly scheduled ExpressJet routes.

This was Alaska’s longest route.

Thanks as always enilria!

It still is, per the line you quoted above only March is changed, this represents changing the seasonal restart date by a week or two. It is still daily starting in April.

It is interesting that AS is increasing frequencies to SLC from LAX,SFO, and PDX. I wonder if there is more to come?

I think this is the first time in many years Air France has had 5 flights to CDG in the spring, plus the one flight to ORY. Can terminal one handle all those 777’s

Looks like G4 is holding on any XNA growth this summer, if not just a hair of decreases, after last summer's seemingly beefed up schedule compared to prior years. VPS-XNA was running 2x daily on most weekends throughout July and August (I realize August isn't loaded yet).

Pretty much what they did last year, increased the flights with demand. I wonder if Frontier drops an MCO on XNA at some point.

This might be incorrect. Looking at April 10th ua.com still shows 3x daily.

DL hasn't really added anything new lately in terms of new markets. it's a lot of stuff from new places to cities they fly already (TPA-AMS last year, the BOS stuff this year), but they really don't add any new markets recently like AA and UA seem to be doing big time. you don't see DL starting PMO, BUD, CMN, OPO type stuff.

United starts ORD-SBA but it is red-eye from SBA-ORD arrive ORD 5AM. Nobody really wants to fly 11PM to 5AM to ORD. I bet will not make a good load. They should SBA-ORD in the morning 6 or 7AM to ORD. It doesn't make sense.

The redeye's from the west coast are packed in the summer and they all follow this similar service pattern. They will do just fine

In the G4 schedule extension, there’s a tonne of plus/minus 0.1, and vice versa, with the schedule extension that is nothing more than day-of-week, year-over-year noise. Filter that out and the true changes are about 1/2 the report.

Net gainers seem to be ABE, ATW, AVL, AZA (slightly), BLV, BMI & CHS (slightly), CVG (big time), DAY, DSM, FNL, GRR, ICT (slightly), LAS, MYR (slightly), PBI (big time), PIE, PVU & RDM (slightly), RNO, SCE, SFB, SWF (slightly), SRQ, VPS and USA (slightly).

Net losers are AUS, BLI, EWR & XNA (all slightly).

I probably missed something. Everything else is roughly equivalent to last year.

Thanks enilria as always.

Plus not to mention a 6/7AM departure chews up a lot of valuable aircraft time during the day. A red eye may be the only way they can afford to add the frequency.

Two daily SkyWest CR2s for the summer, not sure if that is an error or if AA is bringing back some more CR2s to PHX. The adds don't really match up with the existing CR2 prorate schedule (plus the flight numbers are contract flight numbers) so could be a good indication of more to come.

It will be almost like a shuttle to CDG between AF and DL; departures out of JFK:

AF023 1625 77W
AF015 1730 772 - new flight
DL262 1830 333
AF007 1900 77W - formerly operated by the A388
DL264 2045 333
AF011 2155 388
AF009 2355 772

The capacity increase from the fifth flight will be relatively marginal as AF will be pulling one of the two A388s off JFK-CDG (the AF007 will be going to a 77W next summer).

Looks like GEG-IAH is a red eye. Perhaps to feed the first flights of the day to Latin America? ONT-IAH is another one thats a redeye.

I saw this and thought it was odd as well considering AA will be running mainline during the winter. Summer is when capacity is needed into COS. It’s a ways out so maybe there just place holders for now... Either way I’m thrilled to see AA already extending this route and providing another alternative to DL and UA going west out of COS. Now if we can get a summer seasonal CLT flight!

UA started FAT-ORD with similar red-eye times as a summer only E75 in 2017. The FAT-ORD flight demand quickly grew.

The FAT-ORD red-eye went mainline and year-round in March 2019. It is operated with varying equipment on different days/months, I've seen in the schedules a 737-800, 737-700 and A319. But it is still on a red-eye time schedule.

UA this past 2019 summer also operated red-eye RDM-ORD and EUG-ORD using E75s.

The red-eyes from the smaller west coast cities are proving to be popular.

Thanks for your excellent insights, Knope - as usual.

MCN was another market like HGR that was close to a hub airport. Several years ago, I flew MCO-MCN-ATL on Silver Airways, just to log MCN before it lost its EAS. There were twelve people on my flight, and to my amazement all but two continued on the flight all the way to ATL.....which didn't bode well for the future of EAS at MCN.

UA added a third BOI-ORD flight and it is also a red-eye. GEG-ORD is a red-eye. So this must work for them.

I think one reason the flights work so well is there aren’t any other redeye options on UA out of those cities. From FAT on UA, you either leave at 6pm-ish, or you leave at 6am. Having an option between those times definitely drives some demand. A 6am flight to ORD wouldn’t add a significant number of meaningful connections from these West Coast cities over the 6am to DEN (just some smaller midwest and NE cities that probably all average fewer than 1 pdew), but the redeye adds a very quick overnight option to both Chicago and a host of major cities in the Midwest and East. All that said, a morning flight would be way more convenient for ORD’s Europe bank, although SFO offers a good number of those same flights.

AF, in Summer 2019, had 2 x daily A388's in the mix. In 2020, there will only be one. Yes, T1 can definitely handle all the 77Ws. If anything, the absence of 1 A388 flight will make things easier. That terminal is bursting at the seams.

I guess people missed my note on United. It appears that they misfiled their schedule by perhaps using an invalid equipment type. Airlines often have their own equipment types that they use inside the airline. These are not standard and are not approved for external use. If an airline files one in their external schedule it is rejected by OAG or Innovata. That is probably what happened here. In their internal schedule it would probably read the equipment type. So it would not affect their own website. Or they could’ve already fixed it

Bummer to see AGP and PDL go. They were two of the unique destinations DL had. Seems to always be another quiet shoe to drop after DL announces an international expansion to their JV hubs.

Agreed about AGP. Actually was surprised it stuck around so long. Took it several times and never saw it more than 70 or so percent full. Was a great nonrev way to Spain as MAD and BCN are usually full.

PDL always seemed odd, it is heavily VFR traffic from the US and skews heavily to New England. However, It must have been doing awful when they did not even attempt to switch the flight to BOS.

AGP I thought was chugging along, it has been served for a few years.

UA DCA-ORD MAR 10>14[14]

This is a big expansion. Where are these slots coming from? Perhaps trimming EWR and upgauging to E Jets from E145s? Axing CLE?

It's not a YOY change so likely it was never supposed to be at 10 to begin with.
