Sun Country to announce 4 NEW destinations Nov.5

Wed Oct 30, 2019 10:23 pm

Via a post on Sun Country’s Instagram, they plan on announcing 4 new destinations all of which to be served from Minneapolis (MSP).

Any thoughts on what the new destinations could be?

MSN's social media is teasing "One of our airlines is announcing some incredible new flight locations" on that date as well.

That will probably be one of them. Although I find it odd that on their (Sun County) social media post, they say “FOUR NEW DESTINATIONS” (yes it’s all in bold on their post). They emphasized NEW in the post making me and most likely others think they don’t fly to them already at all.

It's probably four new destinations out of MSP... doesn't mean they can't announce other stuff (i.e. out of MSN) as well

Wouldn't be surprised to see either Ft Lauderdale or West Palm Beach come into play.

Islip (ISP) fits into their new ULCC model, although I’m not sure they would start service with EWR down the road. Does SY still fly into JFK?

Also, it says SOME and locationS . It sounds like more than one will be announced.

Do any other airlines have schedule extensions planned for next week?

Where are they getting the airframes? I didn’t think they had any on order. Maybe reducing the charter flights?

Maybe, although Sum Country will adds desk to an airport even if they only serve it 4 times a year for charters. Example: Muskegon, a REALLY small airport in Michigan that sees about 4-5 Sun County departures for charters and they have a counter there.

Not saying your wrong, just something to think about

AFAIK those are for military and casino charters only.

I actually haven't seen any signage myself, but I'll try and look for it on Friday.

Why FLL when they already fly to MIA? Smaller carriers (and Sun Country doesn't even crack the top ten) usually pick one or the other.

SY re-adding service to Houston is a possibility as SY served HOU nonstop from MSP on a seasonal basis 13 years ago.

Here are the load factors for SY MSP-HOU nonstop service back when SY served HOU:
2006 = 91.93%
2007 = 85.43%

As much as I would love for it to be PIT, I think there are other destinations that are much more likely.
My predictions are IAH, CLT, RNO and possibly JAX

SJC also seems like a possibility. PIT, IAH, RDU, JAX, MEM, ABQ, ORF, and PNS all also seem like possibilities.

SY adding MSP-SLC is a possibility since (a) DL is currently the only carrier serving SLC nonstop from MSP, (b) there is some leisure traffic to Utah from MSP to support SY possibly adding MSP-SLC nonstop service, (c) SY already serves a few DL hub airports such as SEA, LAX, and BOS nonstop from MSP, and (d) some of the recent SY adds out of MSP were to destinations that previously had no nonstop competition out of MSP.

A long shot but maybe MSP-FNT. FNT would be a great add for them but it is better served by maybe some Florida nonstops FNT-MCO and FNT-TPA

I agree these are the kind of locations, I don't see IAH with UA and DL on that route. Think PIT and MEM definitely could be among the possibilities.

That would surprise me, as the available gate space in SLC is dwindling monthly, until the 1st phase of the new terminal opens in the fall of 2020.

That's just a common use counter with electronic signs displaying whomever happens to be using it at the time. Sun Country runs gambling charters a couple of time per month out of PIT to Gulfport and Laughlin. No connection whatsoever to any new SY service. That doesn't mean new service couldn't or won't happen just that its not related to that ticket counter. I don't think any scheduled SY service to PIT is on the horizon but would like to be wrong about that.

I can understand SY not adding MSP-SLC nonstop service until more gate space becomes available at SLC, even though I mentioned SY adding MSP-SLC as a possibility once enough gate space becomes available at SLC with SLC being a leisure destination and with SY already serving a few other DL hub airports such as BOS, LAX, and SEA nonstop from MSP.

I would say IND or SDF, IND would pull in people that don't want to deal with ORD and SDF for those in Southern Indiana and KY that don't want to drive to STL or BNA.

I wonder if they will return to SJC, especially now that they have become a ULCC and branched out beyond MSP. They flew scheduled SJC-MSP on and off in the 2000s, I wonder if they'd try PDX or PSP to be a thorn in the side of AS/WN. DL has quite a few frequencies on the SJC-MSP route compared to years prior, so I'd be a little surprised to see them step back into that market.

Wishful thinking would be AVL, but if NK couldn’t really make AVL work I don’t think SY could. But the again NK flew in direct competition with G4 to florida

Funny thing is AVL was one of my first thoughts when I saw this thread. It is becoming such a trendy destination. However, I do not know how much of a vacation destination it is from Minnesota.

SY has a hub at PDX, they serve just under a dozen or so destinations non-stop from there, Palm Springs being one of them. SFO, MSP, HNL, SAN, PSP, PHX, LAS, BNA, SAT, STL & SJD. In addition they fly RDM-LAS as well. Check out their most current route map. https://www.suncountry.com/route-map

When did they do that? AFAIK, it was only Laughlin charters and the occasion sports charters too.

Early 2000s, either right before the shut down or right after the re-start. SJC is on a printed routemap I have somewhere on a brochure. I thought it was MSP-SJC, but if it was IFP-SJC, then it was scheduled and not just charter.

There is probably not enough demand for SY to add MCI-MSP since (a) the load factor for WN MCI-MSP was only 57.15% in the January 2019 - July 2019 time period, (b) most of the destinations that SY would be serving nonstop from MCI are already served nonstop out of MCI on WN, NK, F9, or G4, and (c) most of the leisure travelers who are traveling out of MCI would probably do so on airlines that already serve MCI.

A little late to the guessing party, but I remember reading an article where Jude Bricker (CEO) said SY wanted to focus next year on family destinations not served from MSP currently. Routes where people will use the airline to visit family members. That being said...

My four random (with some thinking) guesses are...

IAH, somewhere in Canada (maybe YWG), IND, and ABQ

I also think SY could sometime serve Bozeman or Billings in the future, but I won't jump there yet.

Visiting family (VFR) instead of vacation destinations would make Fresno (FAT) a contender for SY service.

Fresno and Minneapolis/St. Paul (especially St. Paul) have the largest Hmong populations in the US. The Hmong culture has a tight family/clan structure. I know people who currently travel between the 2 areas to visit with family often but current air fare and connections often makes them drive.

FAT would also allow for vacationers from MSP or other areas to visit the 3 national parks in the area: Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon.

I'm going say STC and EAU with expanded bus service on landline, and then something weird like CHS and SLC with air service. I feel like this is a hard one to get a good feel of.

I’ve noticed construction at the ticket counter between AA and SW at ONT. Makes me wonder if ONT might be one of the new destinations. Would not be surprising with all the new service going to ONT and the complete mess that LAX is currently in.
