Air Arabia to order 100 aircraft

Thu Feb 14, 2019 10:38 am

Air Arabia has today anounced that it will be ordering upto 100 aircraft from either Airbus or Boeing depending on the negotiations and the best fit for the airline.
The order is expected to be placed before the end of Q2.

Air Arabia has announced a net loss of $83.5 million due to its exposure to embattled private equity firm Abraaj. In June 2018, Air Arabia has disclosed that it had an exposure of $336 million to Abraaj through fund portfolios and short-term loans.

I can see them ordering a lot of A321LRs. I can also see them being quite the thorn in EY and EK's side in the future.

You would think this would be A320neo/A321neo or LR so it would be Airbus order to loose. Sounds like this could be one order announced at the Paris Air Show in June

That's quite an increase in capacity for a group of airlines currently operating 54 A320s (assuming they actually order 100).

Given they've only operated A320s and are just about to receive their first neo this month, you would think Airbus should be favourite to win this. But it's not over until the fat lady sings.

Likelihood of it being a mixed narrowbody/widebody order?

Very unlikely, IMHO. Air Arabia has done reasonably well by sticking to what they've been doing since inception. I don't see them falling victim to a desire to 'compete' with their bigger brothers just down the road.

A32Xneo's will be a very good fit here and help with costs and commonality too.

I think it might be a mix of A320NEOs, A321NEOs and A321LRs.

Air Arabia will soon be taking delivery of their first A321NEO

What are the lead times for a 320/321neo if you order it today ? How early can you receive 100 aircraft ?

SHJ is going to need to expand in a huge way. When I was there last year it felt cramped.

Who says all aircraft will be based in Sharjah? Air Arabia also has subsidiaries in Egypt and Maroc, some of those planes might be for them. They also have a smaller side hub at Ras al Khaimah. Besides, wasn't it announced lately that Air Arabia would cooperate with Etihad to set up a new LCC in Abu Dhabi? It's logical they'll need planes for that too.

Perfect. Etihad will be left with A321neos so Air Arabia can start basing them all in AUH. lol

On a more serious note, I am sure a part of them will ed up in Abu Dhabi, that's for sure

Yes. Obviously Airbus must increase production. These large orders certainly add up!

I hope for a copy if the new Hamburg line added to mobile and 2 (or 3) in Toulouse.

Add NK to the mix and it's been a pretty incredible few weeks for Airbus.

With the Indigo, Spirit and Vietjet orders the NEO programme has 7180 orders now.
Its undelivered backlog is larger that the backlog of Boeing for all its aircraft families put together!

It's mind-boggling. If these MoUs are firmed up during 2019 I think the NEO backlog would be at its largest with just more than 6000 units (even after 1150 estimated deliveries).

Max effect ! Airlines know NB planes are going to be more expensive and harder to get and Airbus knows suppliers will take capacity from Max to sup Neo like engines wich are difficult to ramp up.

Was not prior said by Air Arabia CEO, they will order up to 120 jets (115 to 120) and till now, B737 and A220 are still not out of race? It is still possible to see a mix of A220 for the more regional subsidiaries and A320 family for the main airline. Also I believe to see a lonely A320 family order by LCC at the end.https://www.thenational.ae/business/aviation/air-arabia-to-decide-on-jet-order-by-january-2020-ceo-says-1.923430

I understand the Bloomberg news as it is still not decided by Air Arabia what will be ordered but that they (Air Arabia) will soon and Airbus will hard work at and around Dubai Airshow to get the order for Airbus.

I get that the NEO buzz is back, but is the title of this thread not misleading?

"Airbus Working to Secure 100-Jet Air Arabia Deal for Dubai Show"

is not the same as

"Air Arabia to purchase 100 A320neo-series".

In fact by definition, the title of the article shows that this one is still yet to be decided...

I totally agree with you both. Mods please update title as you see fit.
There has been many reports about this upcoming order, but this one is the most recent on and IMO seems to indicate that we could see an order of (specific) A320neos at the Dubai Airshow in a couple of weeks.
Bloomberg is quite often pretty correct about this reporting. Anyway ... we'll know quite soon as the Dubai Airshow (17th to 21st of November) is coming "right up".

Air Arabia group has 55 A320S planes and few more in order, so we could say that with this order they plan to grow by 40 planes at least, not bad, maybe we will see some more planes base in Egypt, In the past Air Arabia set up 2 airlines that fail, one in Jordan and one in Nepal, I don't think they will try to revive any of them, but the option is always there.

It is true that Sharjah airport is crowded at times, but I think they can add few more planes before start having real space problems, but I think they will need to start planning some more parking space and maybe a new pier for the terminal.

Talk about "worrying excessive pitch problems" (I do NOT underestimate those) but this plane is selling like hot cupcakes for the last few weeks, it's insane.

Air Arabia Jordan didnt fail because it was a failure. The Jordanian Civil Aviation Authority JCAA was protecting RJ by rejecting Air Arabia Jordan expansion plans into Europe.

That could change in the future, I did not know about that, I just knew they had to abandon the project.

It could be nice, but Delta still have 132 A321 on order. However sooner or later they will have to order something to replace the A320-3219,, MD's and B738-737.

Emirates going for more A350's. I know it's not confirmed yet but I think we will see this 100 A320NEO jets sign at the DAS19.
