FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

that's the market the are going to introduce the Tecnam Traveler on. Must be a mis-file. Maybe don't have proper coding yet for that A/C type?

I bet that is it. That type probably doesn't have a valid code yet.

Thanks enilria!

Looks like B6 is redeploying the FLL-Cuba planes to ATL/KIN/MBJ during the holiday season. I wonder if that will stick around more permanently. Interesting to see FLL-LAS go up to 2x, and all that additional EWR and BDL capacity. FLL transcon and Northeast-Florida trunk routes seem to be particular areas of strength.

Any thoughts on whether AA’s reduction on MIA-PLS/POS are MAX-related? B6 mgmt cited soft LatAm demand (RASM was down high single digits in this reason over Q3), so If not, I wonder if this is just AA reflecting some of those same observations.

Sad to see AA drop JFK-SEA (the cut is now permanent).

No boost to MIA-HAV by AA, in frequency or gauge, to offset the other MIA-Cuba cuts?

With what slots? US carriers are no longer allows
to fly outside of Havana, but still only allowed a combined 20 daily Havana flights, and they are all used up.

SAF keeps on growing!

Four daily is pretty impressive. If there is much more growth the size of the terminal will become an issue. I wonder how long before DL or AS start service.

Nice growth at IAD by UA. It’s nice to see that long forgotten hub slowly gain more flights. At one point it was the equivalent of AA’s JFK hub nowadays (big difference between both of them obviously).

AA flies three daily to POS in heavy season. Carnival season ended in March last year so they flew three daily thru March. It ends in February this year so they run three daily thru Feb. AA only loaded Max cuts thru January IIRC so it’s not that. Dunno what’s up with PLS.

I could see AA dropping ORD-COS in the summer, but you would think that in the winter, AA would want a round trip from ORD to every Colorado airport near a ski resort.

Upgauging, then? The 6x 738 in the schedule for Monday, 1/13/20, hardly represents AA heaviest metal.

Quincy posted an article earlier about how the city was very unhappy with the on time factor with United/SkyWest to ORD.

Quincy saw on average a 40% on time rate for UIN-ORD and considered it to be abysmal and they never saw this with Cape Air.

Now with 9K returning to UIN, UIN gets two destinations, STL and ORD, and they still get an interline connection with AS/UA/DL/AA at STL and ORD, and American will put their code share flight UIN-STL/ORD with Cape Air.

That's why UIN voted for Cape Air over SkyWest.

Despite all that, OO still carried 60% more passengers than 9K for the last 12 months of data vs the last 12 months of 9K.

Per Enilria’s header above the NK flights:

“JUN is a partial month, and APR was previously partial month. Look at May.”

Looks like other than a very slight uptick in the frequency of MSY flights, the CMH NK schedule is unchanged.

I think this likely tells the tale. They may have been in danger of losing service completely by busting the subsidy cap.

“For the week of Thanksgiving, SkyWest's website Thursday night, indicated around 181 passengers have booked a seat over the course of 24 flights for the week.”

Wow... But I do understand it. Close-in flights from the small cities are the first ones screwed when ORD goes into a program. Cape can use the low altitude escape routes in and out, while a CRJ likely cannot.

Thank you for all your efforts, Enilria.

Can anyone update me on the status or existence of AA's SAN-JFK? I see SEA-JFK this week appears to be (permanently?) disappearing but I've lost track of the latest on SAN-JFK. (Seems to that about every other week one or the other of the routes is on here, usually with an extension of "0" flights.)

Of course SEA also has AS flying to JFK, in addition to DL and B6, while SAN only has the latter 2 so maybe AA is dropping SEA before SAN?

Thanks for the update. I see HA HND-HNL is going to 3x daily? Does that mean HND-KOA is going away? I thought, with the new HND slot, that HA was operating HNL 2.5x daily, and KOA 0.5x daily. Boosting HNL to 3.0x implies no more HND-KOA.

I'm thinking they will either be more aggressive at getting A320 reconfigs done. Or more likely, I think some additions from late April will be announced soon. And given that nothing has been updated so far for May, I'm hoping that means new routes. It's almost like the B6 management is afraid of making a mistake so trying these short term adds to the schedule. Really strange to me.

KOA-HND is still available for booking. Would U.S. carriers have to apply to transfer a HND frequency (pre-existing) to another city?

Does NK have partial month reporting which leads to incomplete months like WN or has NK made its three year-round CMH flights less-than-daily?

The way the report works is it divides the ops for the month by the number of days to get average daily flights. Because some carriers don't file a normal 330 day advance schedule you get this situation when they file a partial month. So they were probably filed through April 20th or so which made 1 RT into .7 RT and then filed through around June 10th which gave June .3 trips. MAY shows no change which means that they loaded 1 roundtrip which was flat from last year and thus not shown. It's messy, but there is no good way to do it without a lot of custom work by me. The way to fix it would be to choose a week in each month to use and move that week based upon how far they filed their schedule, but retrieving data like that from the source is almost impossible or at least a massive amount of work. So, it is what it is. The other problem with using a single week is that sometimes there is a holiday in that week which creates even bigger problems.

I believe what is happening is that they have basically not flown it for months and seem to be taking bookings as of now for FEB or MAR and beyond, however, what has been happening is that they have been doing a rolling bait and switch where they drop it when it gets within maybe 120 days and then push the return of the nonstop further out. They are doing this with a large number of JFK flights and blaming it on the MAX when they could just spread the MAX cuts out around their massive network and it would be nearly invisible.

My understanding based upon the Delta HND slots in past instances is that they have to be reapproved and could be lost to another carrier.

That's silly. Inferring a new route because there is a 90 minute sit in the IAH schedule? C'mon now.

It's not particularly unusual at an outstation that's only an hour flying time from a banked hub. AA do it a lot. Despite their operation at DFW being a disaster they seem to prefer keeping the flights from the close-in stations on the ground rather than spread out the in-bound arrivals. It's crazy IMHO.

AA flies three daily to POS in heavy season. Carnival season ended in March last year so they flew three daily thru March. It ends in February this year so they run three daily thru Feb. AA only loaded Max cuts thru January IIRC so it’s not that. Dunno what’s up with PLS.

I thought PLS had seen a lot of lost service since the hurricane.

NK CMH-MCO APR 0.7>1.0[1.0] JUN 0>0.3[1.0]

I believe what is happening is that they have basically not flown it for months and seem to be taking bookings as of now for FEB or MAR and beyond, however, what has been happening is that they have been doing a rolling bait and switch where they drop it when it gets within maybe 120 days and then push the return of the nonstop further out. They are doing this with a large number of JFK flights and blaming it on the MAX when they could just spread the MAX cuts out around their massive network and it would be nearly invisible.

But what is the 3 letter IATA code? Perhaps one is not approved yet, or Cape Air doesn't know what the correct code is?

Thanks for the update. I see HA HND-HNL is going to 3x daily? Does that mean HND-KOA is going away? I thought, with the new HND slot, that HA was operating HNL 2.5x daily, and KOA 0.5x daily. Boosting HNL to 3.0x implies no more HND-KOA.

KOA-HND is still available for booking. Would U.S. carriers have to apply to transfer a HND frequency (pre-existing) to another city?

My understanding based upon the Delta HND slots in past instances is that they have to be reapproved and could be lost to another carrier.

As far as I’m aware, PLS hasn’t received any major damage from any recent hurricane. In fact, AA announced plans to increase service from its other hubs.

PLS lost a lot of service right after the hurricane. If you google Dorian Turks Caicos you will see there were warnings and such. I don't know if any damage was done. Perhaps a big resort was hit? Seems like too much of a coincidence.

PLS had a huge downturn after Dorian. It is slowly getting back to pre-dorian levels.
All of the big resorts in Provo got hit a little bit and got closed for some time. We have been to Provo a few times and it is a great place, but was expensive before....

AA's also generally stronger in SAN than they are in SEA. SEA's one of the weakest major markets for AA, which isn't surprising given where their hubs are located. So, given the competition and their overall market position, I'm not surprised JFK-SEA would go away before JFK-SAN would.

both SAN/SEA are marginal market now. SEA was doing worse though. I don't see how not flying SAN for almost a year is going to work out for AA.
