Why no F9 to the TX Panhandle?

Mon Nov 04, 2019 3:02 am

Why is it that Frontier doesn't serve AMA, LBB or MAF? Is the market not there or is WN too dominant? They seem like under served markets that could make a ULCC work. Your thoughts?

The markets are TINY. Not a lot of leisure demand. Lots of demand is driven by oil and gas business traffic, not the type to fly 2x weekend F9.
Airlines flown: AA, AB, AC, AY, BA, CO, DL, DY, EW, F9, G4, IB, KL, LH, LX, NK, NW, NZ, OS, QF, SN, TP, UA, US, VA, VC, WN, XE

Probably the same reasons that AS, B6, and HA don't serve any of them - they don't see an economic justification for it.

They are also pretty well-served by AA and UA, albeit as full-fare carriers.

Amarillo, Lubbock, and Midland/Odessa are strong markets for Southwest as well.

Which is barely served by anyone else. Easier to do well with a lot less competition.

My feelings:
LBB, local folks stay home, Techsters go home and back (mostly to DFW area)
MAF, oil folks go home for their time off, not vaca locations and others go to Houston area.
AMA, ranchers stay home or don't really frequent locations F9 would offer. Not many West Texas-Orlando folks.
Lived and worked at MAF for a year and pretty stable style of pax. See many same folks back and forth to same places.
Gem State Airlines..."we have a gem of an airline"

While WN already serves LBB nonstop from DEN, the load factor for WN DEN-LBB nonstop flights was only 57.78% in the January 2019 - July 2019 time period, which is lower than any of the other WN nonstop routes out of DEN.

WN adding MAF-DEN nonstop service is a possibility since there is more demand for WN service out of MAF than there is out of LBB.

Nah. The consensus on here is that airlines and route planners generally have vendettas or don’t know what they’re doing when someone’s “home” airport isn’t served.
