United and Star Wars

Thu Nov 07, 2019 3:53 pm

Gang, not sure if this has been covered here, couldn't find it in search. I was looking at flights this morn on flightaware.com and I notice that where UAL flights were listed (ORD to Heathrow in this case), there was a Star Wars logo next to the listed flight instead of the UAL logo. And it reminded me that when I flew UAL last week (EWR to HOU) I noticed that there was a Star Wars theme built into the Safety Video. Quite frankly, I have never been a fan of these funny safety videos that have become the trend. They're usually not funny, and I'm old-fashioned and I don't think safety videos are the place for forced humor. But then to co-brand Hollywood into these videos, I think that takes it to a whole other level. And I could almost see the FAA arguing that the Star Wars theme would distract from the safety messaging. I know people here will tell me to lighten up. Fair enough. I just think there is a time and a place for humor and co-branding and safety videos isn't it. And why a Star Wars logo would be attached to a UAL flight on flightware, that leaves me scratching my head too.

It’s called marketing and promotion.

Cheesy or not, the "movie-like" safety videos get people to watch and to take in information in a new, different way. I admit, even if I have seen them before I still watch; whereas the "standard briefing" style of safety demonstration I typically ignore, and so do others. I have taken hundreds of flights and could recite the safety demo in my sleep, but watching them still captures my eyes for a few minutes.

The important thing is more people watch the safety videos now than they did when they were sterile. Anything to get that information absorbed is a good thing, in my opinion.

I would have prefered something like they do on Star Tours at Disney Parks. How about Darth Vader force choking a smoker?

I think its tacky as hell, and very very American, so it works for United.

Saw a blurb on FB this morning that the Star Wars B738 jet will be formally rolled out today?

As was announced in United's press release from a couple weeks ago. https://hub.united.com/2019-10-25-fly-t ... 06450.html

This was also announced in the same press release.

United did the same thing earlier this year with Spider Man: Far From Home. This is hardly new, nor is it unique to the US. Air New Zealand has done multiple The Hobbit/Lord of the Rings safety videos.

The droid does the Deltalina finger wag when reminding passengers that smoking isn't allowed.

Spider Far From Home was 2-way marketing at least. The movie had the kids flying United and going through Newark - though some idealized signage and look.

Can't imagine Star Wars will be so nice to throw a globe logo randomly into the movie...

Thought immediately of Pan Am in "2001 A Space Odyssey", 51 years ago.

Oh geez lighten up. Do you honestly pay attention to the WN, AS flight attendants dramatized safety peesentation In the aisles? I’ve seen it a million times same old story. I do however get pulled into the videos because it does captivate interest. And saying it’s such an American thing is total BS. NZ QF and a handful of other do it too.
