Avianca cancels LIM-MVD/ASU/CUN

Thu Nov 07, 2019 4:50 pm

Further reducing its footprint at Lima and its hub there as per their AV2021 plan, Avianca announced it is cancelling service to ASU, CUN & MVD from LIM effective 15/1/20. The airline also announced that the cancellation of LIM-HAV is being moved forward to 15/11/19. All these cities will now be served via their BOG hub.

Crazy they can't compete with LATAM in LIM.. Huge market you would think they could split it.

LATAM truly owns LIM. Even at the best of times, it was like LA around 57% and AV around 12%. Setting up LAN Peru back in 1998 (and the LIM hub) was one of the most brilliant moves by the Chilean airline.

AV is not doing well financially, they need to focus on their strengths. While they may keep a small focus city operation in LIM I believe the future for the airline is focusing on the BOG and SAL hub.

You could say that about LATAM in BOG against them (they cut all international operations and only have a competitive domestic schedule from BOG to MDE and CLO). Both airlines just have a tough grip on each of the markets.

By the way, LIM-HAV has to do with AV cancelling the entire Cuba operation due to the embargo (AV Holdings is now a Delaware corporation).

IMO LIM will be just a bare bones station serving as a reliever for the busiest South-BOG-North corridors at least until the airline gets back to profitability.

Does anyone what's in the cards for the LIM-POA service?

Is LIM even a hub anymore? Seems like there really isn’t much left. SAL hasn’t seen much growth either. It seems like everything is focused on BOG.

It's also rumored that LIM-PUJ will be canceled and that an additional frequency will be added to the BOG-PUJ route

I’ve heard from a friend who works in the relevant department at AV that BOG-POA is going To launch soon, probably to the detriment of LIM-POA.

LIM seems to make no sense in the operation right now. Sad. I hope the station is not completely dismantled.

Did they also cancel the US-Lima as well?

Does Peru allow fifth freedom flights anymore? Eastern and Braniff before had hubs in Lima. Could UA add some LIM flights to make up for AV?

They still fly MIA-LIM with a 330, at once a day.

Not sure there is appetite for US carriers to be flying 5th freedom rights within S America. Can’t see UA setting up a mini hub in LIM.

There is no longer demand for a hub such as the one that BN had built in LIM based on 5th freedom flights. The market has evolved with non stop flights to the US from pretty much every major city in South America and very strong local airlines such as LATAM and COPA that offer excellent regional connectivity.

More AV cuts at their LIMA hub (if it can still be called a hub - seems like focus city would be more appropriate?).

Cancellations:
*LIM-POA (POA will be now flown from BOG)
*LIM-PUJ

*LIM-GIG reduced to 3x w

Not too many details from AV this time around: https://twitter.com/CeoAvianca/status/1 ... 5096266759

Brazilian media says that LIM-GIG is reduced to 3 weekly until June 11th then it goes back to daily.
