Surprised it's taken this long.

Interesting timings, I wonder why they didn’t hop right in Norwegians spot.

Did they announce this last year and never start it?

It makes sense to have a flight IST-EWR due to good connections at both ends. From the USA's east coast, there is a significant Middle Eastern population,.(including persons from or of Turkish ancestry mainly in northern NJ) and easy same-airline connections to Middle East that are not available via some other airlines.

It was supposed to start back in August of last year but they couldn’t find the slots for their desired timeframe so the starting date got pushed back.
Airports I have been to:
DFW, EWR, IAH, JFK, LAS, LGA, MCO, MIA, NRT, ORD, PHL, PHX, SEA, SLC, YTZ, YYZ

That's what I thought too. Wasn't this supposed to launch in August 2019?

TK originally served EWR in the 1990s with the A340-300 then consolidated everything at JFK.

With a 1030pm arrival into EWR there are no connections to be had.

Doesnt that schedule essentially mirror one of their flight from JFK? I feel this was almost the schedule I had when I flew them JFK-CAI back in 2015

I didn't see this as an EWR connections move because at lot of the major demand cities in the U.S. and Canada already have their own TK non-stops. Foremost this addresses the northern NJ population that isn't willing to drive to JFK - however numerous that may be.

Timings are not good for connection at all. Hopefully they will get earlier slots one day !
I still miss Trans World Airlines and the L-1011

TK is more concerned with local and beyond IST traffic. I doubt there will even be a UA code on this flight.

That's the first thought that popped into my mind as well.

Yes it does that flight is TK12. Austrian has a similar case with their NYC flight pairs OS87/88 and OS89/90 where they arrive and depart JFK and EWR within half an hour of each other respectively.

I wish it would start 3 days earlier, because I could be on the inaugural return flight!

UA does not cooperate with other Star carriers, unless they are JV partners and a select few other Star carriers, they see all Star carriers to be bigger competitors than other alliance or independent carriers. TK was not looking for any connecting traffic (and UA will not allow either) and while there may be some on the outbound, it will be only a few.

A further example of the importance of JV/equity positions in the evolution of interline relationships in the industry.

The LH Group competes heavily with TK on many key traffic flows (Africa/SE Asia/ME/S Asia) and is at a cost disadvantage, which also has a negative impact on UA given the revenue-sharing A++ JV.

It's not to bad ex-IST from what I can tell.

I don't think they're dependent on getting ex-EWR connections at all.

They are shooting for the NJ traffic that will connecting to Middle Eastern, Asian and even some European traffic.
I wish they could do a nice code share with United but we know how much UA loves TK. :)

The only connections that matter are the ones at IST. The flight is timed to connect to lots of TK's evening bank of flights. It would be able to connect to the same flights the other daily flights from North America connect to. Flying from North America to eastern Europe, it works well. You leave at night arrive at IST around 17:00, have about two to two and a half hours between flights, then fly to your destination in the evening at a good time to get to where you are staying and ready for bedtime. Going the other way you leave mid to late morning, arrive just after noon at IST, have two to two and a half hours between flights, and land in the US in the evening.

Love the outbound timings, full day in Istanbul and still arr in New York at a civilised hour.

I actually see UA codeshares out of LHR to IST. So some cooperation.

Flight arrives at 17.10 so these are some of the destinations it can connect to:

TLV, FRU, MLA, KBP, DLA, BKK, ABV, NJM, CAI, BEY, TAS, DAC, SJJ, OTP, PHC, TSE, DAR, DXB, ATH, KGL, MCT, ADD, AUH, TGD, KIV, BEG, ODS, SKP, SOF, SKG, BOM, ZNZ, RUH, HKT...

Given the length of the list, I don't think TK needs UA to fill any of its 4 daily flights to the greater New York area. Turkish Airlines has grown into a major player which keeps on pumping millions into further promoting its brand.

Mind you, some destinations like OTP, ATH, TLV, BEY... are served by a widebody aircraft thus providing for a superior onboard experience compared to some airlines they are competing with (mostly UA and its JV allies).

Another route that Turkish Airlines should open is Istanbul to Dallas/Fort Worth, which would provide competition for Emirates and Qatar Airways on their DFW routes from Dubai and Doha respectively.

TK is receiving 787's at a fast pace and 2020 will see the arrival of A350's some for increased frequency and some for new markets, TK will be exciting to watch in the coming years, I can see DFW somewhere down the road, but I think DTW, SEA will be before DFW.

This flight has been specifically introduced keeping the Indian market (BOM in particular) in mind.

TK originally served EWR in the 1990s with the A340-300 then consolidated everything at JFK.

TK initially started IST-BRU-EWR three times weekly from October 1992, in August 1994 the route went nonstop IST-EWR, by October 1994 TK had ceased flying to EWR and they consolidated their New York flights at JFK.

It's excellent news for EWR to welcome yet another long haul airline to it's portfolio albeit a resumption with the news that TK is returning after a hiatus of nearly 26 years.
