Ethiopian Airlines names a B787-9 "Tel Aviv"

Tue Nov 12, 2019 8:18 pm

Ethiopian Airlines has bestowed the name "Tel Aviv" to its soon to be delivered B787-9. Is this a situation waiting to happen when/if operating the aircraft into Arab countries?

I doubt anything noteworthy at all would happen. It's not like countries are actively trying to create diplomatic crisis.
First to fly the 787-9

The real question is does ET even deploy the 787 to any Arab countries? From what I know most flights are operated with the 737.

DXB is 3 daily. 1 737 and 2 A350/777. Although the wide body flights do occasionally get 787 swaps.

I don't think it will spark some sort of crisis in light of recent years and statements made in some nations throughout the ME.

I'd never thought that a foreign company will name it's plane after a city in Israel, and I'm very joyfull that it's finally happening.

I wonder what prompted the selection of this name... Not something I would have seen coming.

Most of the Arab countries are operated with Ethiopian's widebodies. Dubai alone is 3x daily mix of A359/B77W/B788-9.
On some days, early morning flights are being subbed by 737s, but that's rare at DXB.

And no, Arab countries such as KSA, UAE, QR, KU, JD, EG are not proactively looking to doom anything Israeli. Only Iran and Palestine are obsessed in this matter.

Just a guess, but there is a sizable Ethiopian Jewish community in Israel. A lot of them came over in the famous Operation Solomon airlift in 1991 as well as previous operations.

ET sends the 787 to Arab countries, all of them in fact. ET tends to swap aircraft in and out often based on demand.

If there's any consistency in naming, ET has been naming its 787-9s with city names, with existing aircraft in its fleet named Beijing, London, Frankfurt, and Tokyo.

The 787-8s' and the A350s' names are inconsistent, but include city names such as Addis Ababa and Rio de Janeiro, as well as prominent people and landmarks. Same with the 777s that have been named.

So just names of destinations on its route network ? Much like BA's 747 fleet years ago.

Yes and no. It named one aircraft Rio de Janeiro after it stopped flying to GIG. Other landmarks and people also.

I wonder if we would see this at ADD.....seems too much of a plane for the route. :scratchchin:

However, it looks like an ideal platform across the Mediterranean/TATL to JFK..... :airplane: .....

One of ET's 787-8's is called Lucy, that to me is a lot more strange.

Lucy is the name of the oldest hominin in the world, whose fossils were found in Ethiopia

Ah, so this is really much ado about nothing. Nothing political at least.

I had to google what a hominin was, fascinating thank you. At least their names make sense and have meaning. :)

It's a typo. Should be 'hominid'.
