Rumor: Virgin Atlantic to Fly A340s Into Summer 2020

Thu Nov 14, 2019 8:32 pm

It's been floating around the internet the past few days that Virgin Atlantic is going to postpone the A340 retirement once again and keep them flying through Summer 2020 due to ongoing RR T1000 issues. Is there any truth to this? If you have information, please cite your sources.

I can't confirm anything regarding the aircraft continuing through to summer 2020 but the latest news released on the 04 November 2019 by VS show's the A340-600 scheduled to operate from LHR to ATL from the 11 November 2019 through to the 08 January 2020, three days later than previously planned.

Perhaps you could have provided the links to your source!

I know which murmurings you are referring too, and these stem from a poster saying that Virgin was asking internally for pilots to volunteer to stay longer on the A340 fleet. Within just days of this, though, Virgin has withdrawn a further A340, taking their fleet down to just 3 frames. While I agree it's likely 1/2 may stay on stand-by over the summer, wasn't this always the plan?

I don't have specific sources. I have seen this mentioned on several aviation related instagram accounts claiming they got it from an inside source. Also, some A.net members have mentioned a memo sent out to VS employees asking for crew to volunteer to remain certified for the A346 rather than moving to the A35K just yet.

I remember reading a comment saying 3 would remain. It's entirely possible that they could just be stand-by, but it wouldn't surprise me if they stay on scheduled service with the T1000 problems still persisting.

It seems that Virgin are operating some Cruise Charters that would otherwise have been operated by Thomas Cook, so it may be that they need additional capacity in the short term.

The A340s will remain at least until the end of July. LHR-LOS will be operated by the A340-600 beginning March 29 ending Jul 31.

VS are to use the 346 on LGW - BGI service on Saturdays throughout March, seems like they are turning the weekly cruise ship charters into an extra scheduled service for that month ( VS 57 / 58 ).
