FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Thanks enilria.

You are right. Looks like DL is completely out of PAP. I don't see any flights out of JFK either. MIA seems to just be AF. Things must be going really bad out there if they can't make it work from ATL. Really interesting that even out of NYC with its large expat population, it can't support even 2 flights a day in January.

You have to wonder how much longer AA can hold out in NY?

Even LGA is seeing cuts.

If I was WN or B6 I would be calling AA about an NYC asset sale.

Not surprising at all. From a revenue perspective, the majority of the Caribbean is completely garbage. Haiti is just higher on that list.

Aren’t the AA cuts them now implementing the extension of the MAX grounding thru March?

Re PAP, DL leaving isn’t that surprising. AA (a much stronger airline there) has made major cuts. Dropping both JFK and FLL and even reducing MIA. B6 also has YoY cuts showing in this thread so something must be going on with that market.

By my little calculations, this update shows AA down approximately 15 flights at JFK from a year ago, (not month ago, but year ago), and 12 down at LGA.

(This number takes into account the subtractions, plus a couple minor additions).

Port Au Prince is a market that really only works from NYC and South Florida in the US. Add any type of instability, which Haiti is prone to and only cities with a large number of Haitian Americans can sustain service (NYC and MIA).

With that, between ELM/BGM/ITH, AA and now UA will have fully consolidated at ITH. DL will be the only carrier left serving all three, and joined at ELM by only G4 (at BGM, DL has been the only carrier since both AA and UA left I believe last year).

UA has tried ORD, EWR and IAD from ELM. I guess they couldn’t make any of them work.

ITH will benefit from the ELM reduction.

I have to think the issue is just not business traffic and that's what DL mostly cares about. It's not a redemption destination either, so they can't justify it by mollifying their elites with a place to go on vacation. It's nearly a pure ethnic market, although every time I'm in ATL the crowd in the boarding area was church groups going down for a mission. Not a high yield demo either.

I get these are MAX cuts, but they really should be sticking them elsewhere at this point. It'll be basically a year of not flying these slots soon. Ridiculous.

Apparently there is something of a gentlemen's agreement between the Port Authority and the airlines that allows them to not utilize their slots in these types of situations, unrelated to the runway closure. Somebody needs to file a complaint with DOT and get that struck down.

Before the current terminal opened in 1994 I think, I remember when ITH had literally, this small bus terminal. Who would have thought, they would become the busiest of the three!

AA did a real hack job on JFK flights!

Apparently there is something of a gentlemen's agreement between the Port Authority and the airlines that allows them to not utilize their slots in these types of situations, unrelated to the runway closure. Somebody needs to file a complaint with DOT and get that struck down.

Neither UA nor WN serve JFK. AA doesn't fly DEN to any NYC airport.
Normally AA has 2 PHL-DEN while UA has 3 PHL-DEN and WN has 3 PHL-DEN. I wouldn't call 3 flights by any airline as having a route "pretty locked down".

Wow! Impressive! United really picked up the AS slack. I would never have thought 3x to SFO on one carrier.

Indeed. I'm also wondering if perhaps it's to dissuade DL from entering the market. One would think a Bay Area flight would be pretty high on their list from RDU at this point, especially with AS leaving.

Youre correct that they dont serve JFK. But JFK is only 1 out of 3 NYC airports. UA has 8 and 7 flights to EWR and LGA respectively.

3x daily CDG-SFO for AF during summer is pretty impressive. Not many airlines flying TATL from the West Coast more than 2x daily. Perhaps maybe no A380 this summer?

F9 has a daily high-density A321 (230 seats) on the route as well, which, as mentioned by Bigant048 above, with their super cheap fares, likely doesn’t help either.

AA PHX-SEA only has 2 flights? That is prime Arizona travel time as us Seattleites are craving anything that resembles sunshine. I know it’s highly competitive, but you’d think they’d try harder, they have a large hub on one end after all.

Your correct it is impressive. The A380 is still scheduled for one daily while the other two flight are 777W. I believe the additional flight is 3x a week on the summer shoulder and then daily for a few months. I think some of this is picking up the slack from the XL flight that is no longer. I also believe the demand is just there for more seats beyond XL. So good options from SFO to Paris this coming summer.

But why? If they’ve already identified NYC as the go to place to cut flights while they’re fleet constrained, why should they arbitrarily switch those cuts to another hub?

You can understand why reductions continue with the impacts of the political and humanitarian situation. The pull out of the UN peace keeping force in October doesn't help with what little business traffic remains. A mission org I have traveled with to Haiti several times over the years has all but stopped scheduling trips over the next several months. An ongoing bad situation continues to get worse.

Paine continues to see its service being re-balanced after now 9 months of service. Last was AS dropping one LAX to add GEG. .
What will UA do with this slot? Add another Denver or get creative with something like ORD or IAH.

BA LHR-MIA APR 3>2[3] MAY 3>2[3] JUN 3>2[3] JUL 3>2[3] AUG 3>2[3]

Wow, BA continues to cut MIA into peak summer after trimming it for late fall '19 and into winter/spring '20! Looking at a random date (May 15th) there's only 3 flights on BA/AA. How can two large OW hubs see such little service? Seems OS isn't the only struggling on MIA-Europe.

Looking at the same date (May 15th) BA/AA have 5 FLIGHTS, one still an A380, between BOS-LHR and BOS isn't even a OW hub. I'm guessing BOS has definitely overtaken MIA as a larger local market to London.

Of course they do... and AA has more connectivity into PHL. This isn't UA hub to UA hub we're talking about, like IAH-DEN.

When we next get a thread 'When is AA going to start TPAC from PHL?' we can all have a good laugh. DEN is the 7th largest domestic O&D airport in the country.

1. Summer isn’t peak for LHR-MIA
2. AA is adding a second flight to replace the BA capacity. It just hasn’t been loaded yet.
3. AFAIK MIA-LHR is a larger local market. BOS likely sees that many flights due to connx at the LHR end and due to the fact that due to geography, O&D traffic between the two is less likely to connect via a third city. That is to say, LHR-MIA traffic has a few more logical connecting hubs (ATL, CLT, JFK, etc.) than BOS-LHR would have.

In the next downturn, AA should worry about chapter 11.

B6 should call AA asap about those JFK slots. If B6 can offer 3 or 4 DCA slots to AA, I'm sure AA would trade a whole lot of JFK slots or some LGA slots for that. Too bad DOJ probably wouldn't allow AA to obtain more DCA slots.

Exactly. AA isn't exactly doing well right now. So in a battle where it's probably running lower margin against an airline with lower cost and have better system wide margin like AS, it's going to have to dial back.

Really interesting that even out of NYC with its large expat population, it can't support even 2 flights a day in January.

But if that's the case, then there is no reason for them to run flights to places like MGA, SAP and GUA out of ATL. All these places are VFR + missionaries. Given how much more O&D there is out of South Florida, DL is always going to be relying more on connections to make these work.

OS cancels MIA in favor of BOS. Interesting...

They were losing money on VIE-MIA. Maybe BOS, with its shorter length, will perform better for them.

"AA JFK-LAS FEB 1.2>0[1.9]"
Is this a permanent cut, or a temporary/seasonal cut?

This looks to be another MAX cut. But now that they've cut this down to 0 for a couple of months, it's hard to see how bringing it in March will result in anything other than extreme low performance.

Same with SAN, which hasn't run for close to a year. I'm really not sure how that can be anything but a disaster if they decide to resume it in March.

I see both SAN/LAS go the direction of JFK-SEA.
