FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Alaska doesn’t fly to Dutch Harbor. They have Pennair fly the route for them and it’s only sold under AS code. Following the Saab 2000 crash, the Penair flight is replaced by a Ravn flight through May 31st, and Alaska will not add it’s code.

Maybe the writing was on the wall for DL to start PDL from BOS and TP is just getting ahead of the curve here.

In addition to PHL-SEA, PHL-YUL is also a big cut.

The big winner this week I’d say is CLE with an extra daily to LAX.

Great to see Taos Air adding Los Angeles (via Hawthorne) and San Diego (via Carlsbad) in addition to their Taos-Dallas/Austin service for the winter. Hope to see the likes of AA* and UA* there soon.

I'm not sure the route is big enough for yet more carriers. This may be a case of TP crowding DL out instead of coaxing them in.

Guess Lliberal and Salina can sustain all nonstops to DEN as the tags (HYS-SLN, PUB-LBL) are eliminated. Too bad Hays loses through flight to ORD (via SLN currently).

Contour's SBA-SMF-PSP and LAS-SBP are already flying and have been since mid October IIRC.

A very large fraction of all the schedule changes in this report involve different operating airlines. That is referenced on the FAQ above. A good explanation, however. :)

So United’s reducing LAX-MEL... good time for AA to step in.

Wow, so both JL and NH are moving a bunch of routes from NRT to HND? That’s unexpected.

I would not be surprised to see this route cut at some point, with UA having MEL now also out of SFO and so much capacity to Australia added in the last few years, I don't know if its that profitable anymore out of LAX for UA?

At this rate AA's operating at FLL will just be CLT/DFW/PHL. Also, that's some serious cuts at PHL. It's weird to me they can't compete on a route like PHL-SEA.

I'm assuming AS interlines with Ravn at least? If not it will be a real pain for the DUT folks trying to get anywhere outside of AK.

Pretty impressive to see TP's sustained momentum here. I think BOS-PDL is a brilliant and smartly placed ad to counter DL. I see a world where the route may have DL, and TP with a B6 feed at the BOS end.

Yes, 7H has an interline agreement with AS. You'll find a few codeshare flights out there where AS is on 7H flights if I remember correctly. I can't remember which routes though.

I think it's just a continuation of the current schedule/frequency. The SFO and LAX flights operate on opposite days.

B6 making smart moves lately from Northeast strong cities (for them) to South Florida. I specifically watch RSW of course as my home airport and they are expanding their already large "snow bird" portfolio with extra daily HPN last week, and now extra daily BDL & BOS. Their near 20 or more flights a day peak currently from RSW.
I haven't been everywhere, but it's on my list!

BR ORD-TPE JUN 0.7>1.0[0.7] JUL 0.7>1.0[0.7] AUG 0.7>1.0[0.7]

This really surprises me. I’m literally sitting at ORD having just come in on BR56. I flew J and it was only 50% full. With OZ pulling ORD-ICN, AA dropping all Asian flights, and seeing how bad BR did today I don’t get this adding flights to daily.

I would not be surprised to see this route cut at some point, with UA having MEL now also out of SFO and so much capacity to Australia added in the last few years, I don't know if its that profitable anymore out of LAX for UA?

They're using the same strategy with MEL-LAX/SFO next year as they are with SYD-IAH/LAX: alternating days in Northern Summer and add capacity for Northern Winter.

In NS they can make more money using the aircraft freed up by making these four routes less than daily on other markets (three daily TATL would be a lot more profitable than more capacity to Australia in low season) whereas in NW it makes a lot of sense to add capacity there as Australia is one of the few markets that peaks at that time of the year.

I think this is similar to what AA operated on the route last summer (it might even have been cut entirely for a few months last summer as AA scrambled to deal with the MAX situation...). Quite different from even just a few years ago when they were still flying FLL-PAP 2x daily as well as PHX, DCA, etc.!

WN in general doesn't fly much from their Florida focus cities to their Western focus cities. Rarely more than 1-2 daily. It makes some sense considering WN doesn't have a particularly competitive product for transcons.

I think some of this was offset by some cuts last week or the week before. UA (like pretty much everyone else) is quite heavily gate constrained at LAX.

This whole thing makes no sense. The crash was pilot error. The Saab 2000 is still flying. Dut is a very important market to AS. And they just bail like this. Why isn’t the Saab 2000 flying? Is the airplane not safe????

It's not doing that much worse than RDU (which is about the same distance). It's quite a bit worse than JFK, but that has more connection at JFK end and half of the flights are D1. It's a little worse than the longer distanced BOS on an abnormally high fare quarter for BOS-SEA. Given the stage length, it's definitely running better margins than ORD.

Looking st LBL, HYS,and SLN sched in late March, goes to a not to hot sched for first two. Arr frm DEN and return between 12-1pm, then a 5pm hour in/out at Hays, 8pm in/out at LBL. No deps earlier than the 1pm hour. Guess if one doesn't want to get anywhere early it is good. I see Scottsbluff, Kearney, and North Platte,NE have similar type schedules as well. Salina has early to DEN, 12pm in/out from ORD, and ron in late from DEN.

They did a similarly dramatic cut in PHL-SEA. I wonder if these are errors or if this has something to do with shifting the MAX cuts out of JFK for the Spring.

This really surprises me. I’m literally sitting at ORD having just come in on BR56. I flew J and it was only 50% full. With OZ pulling ORD-ICN, AA dropping all Asian flights, and seeing how bad BR did today I don’t get this adding flights to daily.

You can't judge based on a flight this week. Thanksgiving week in the US has basically no business travellers so you would expect J to be pretty empty.

On top of my flight I also mentioned the recent withdrawal of Asiana from ORD, as well as AA’s complete withdrawal for ORD-Asia flights. So I’m not judging based on just my flight this week. Several other factors are being mentioned.

Add to the list ORD-HKG on UA getting the axe. It is no secret ORD-Asia is over served. BR does offer some low fares to SE Asia, so I am sure they can usually fill the plane (whether or not the flight is profitable is a completely different story).

That's a huge cut, and surprising given that YUL's economy is booming right now. I wonder what's motivating this?

They did a similarly dramatic cut in PHL-SEA. I wonder if these are errors or if this has something to do with shifting the MAX cuts out of JFK for the Spring.

I don't think this has anything to do with MAX cuts as it's all Eagle flying. It seems like AA have pulled almost all the expanded transborder flying they added in 2018. For example YOW-PHL was cut back to 2x earlier this year with departures at 0600 & 1305. YUL-PHL at 2x only has afternoon departures at 1257 and 1805. I really don't think AA has much of a 'strategy' when it comes to Canada anymore. YYZ-LGA is a shadow of its former self at only 4x ERD.

PHL-SEA isn't Eagle flying, but it isn't really relevant whether it is Eagle flying or not anyway. They can just do a cancel down where bigger aircraft swaps for a smaller aircraft until an Eagle route falls out the bottom. That's actually the profit optimal thing to do when you have a larger aircraft not flying. It makes much less sense to cancel its route than to downsize out some lower yield bookings and get rid of a route or flights on a smaller aircraft at the end of the swaps.
