Having been through SYD for the first time in 5 years twice this year, I can say that the new(?) area is not a great experience... I can see how the north pier has been left whist they work with QF/EK etc on the A380 gates and area. Id suspect big investment there in the next year or so.

The list is just a grab-bag of destinations. It always amazes me that airports think they can target new routes. Usually it is smaller cities like ADL and CBR doing this but SYD has joined in. It is a demand industry and it is the airlines and ultimately consumer demand that will generate new routes.

US and Asia flights typically arrive into SYD in the early morning (before 9AM) where there are currently virtually no available slots or gates.

Not to mention those Asian destinations - BOM, CMB maybe, but SHE/TSN/PNH/PUS and especially USM? You gotta be kidding me.

USM with a 2100m runway and SYD airport is targeting a direct flight to there? One'd better fire the people who initiated these nonsense.

Whilst I don’t agree with many on that list - airports have teams of business development managers, flying around trying to drum up business, and support routes with marketing, commercial agreements and partnerships with tourism agencies and state governments. I don’t think demand is solely managed by carriers, airports also have access to vast tools to analyses passenger trends and demands. Of course talking the big talk helps keep investors happy too!

Don't think it'll happen but who konws. None of the big three integrator currently fly into MEL AFAIK so won't be surprised if this don't change and they continue using existing capacity.

Actually, it's the Cooks River. The Georges River comes out at the southern end of Botany Bay.

I've read a few theory's on other sites saying QF could move their BNE - NRT to HND in response to VA entering the route. I think that's an outside chance, although if QF and JL do announce some sort of partnership it could work.

I don’t think OZ are seasonal either - just a number of charters. Not sure if they are open to general sale or not?

OZ will operate the route 1 weekly from 26DEC to 21FEB so 9 return flights all up. The flights are opened for general reservations like any other flight. They are considered as “scheduled charter” flights but the way these flights are sold, they seem to be just regular seasonal flights. There is no guarantee that they will be back next year, all depends on how this summer performs.

OZ are also offering ICN-MEL-SYD-ICN routing which is proving to be quite popular for tourists.

I could be wrong but haven't most of the other carriers granting HND slots flying new routes already loaded their reservations for NS20 (e.g. VA but also those outside of Australia like AZ, SK or AY)? Seems awfully tight timeframe-wise from a reservations perspective if they want to launch a second SYD daily flight, given all carriers need to be using their new HND slots by 29 Mar. Whereas if its merely swapping NRT to HND, I would think less work is required from a bookings/reservation perspective.

If it was indeed MEL, I suspect the delayed announcement might be contingent on fleet choices with the existing SYD daily service e.g. the old A388 to HND negotiations matter.

From my understanding QF has already decided on who gets HND they just have decided not to announce it until January. Im not sure MEL is a given, it may well be but if QF decided to go double daily on HND-SYD they would necessarily be selling a new flight. With the 744 on the way, they would operate a double daily SYD-HND with either 789's or A330's or a mix of both. As a result the second flight would take the overflow from the downgraded flight so depending on what aircraft they use, 2 SYD-HND flights over the current one may only see seat capacity of 100-150 added per day

Still a lot more risk overall to try and sell those seats with a smaller lead in time, especially when NH is also boosting capacity.

MEL makes more sense if they want to reduce risk in an Australia-Japan market that is going to be quite saturated with capacity all of a sudden. It’s likely better to try and maximise yields from both MEL and SYD by flying to HND with less overall capacity to try and fill in this conditions.

If it really needs more SYD-Tokyo capacity at a later stage, it can launch NRT services.
