I am in VIE at the moment on a sunday morning and see an OS 763 to Innsbruck and a 772 to Budapest.
Is it normal for OS to throw widebodies on short european turns? Are these daily or is it a Sunday special.

Or, I guess, is there just an odd gate structure and looks become deceiving.

You probably see the widebodies, but they are longhaul whereas the gates are used for INN/BUD and bus boarding (since both flights are actually operated by the smallest type in their fleet - Dash8)

Would innsbruck even be able to handle a 767 (assuming full passenger load but low fuel load)? Would be cool if os flies 767 there. I would book a flight just for fun.

I flew an OS 767 FRA-VIE in the summer, so it does happen.

Might also be crew training, to keep enough wide body drivers current.

I checked FR24 and both flights operate with Q400s today.
I haven’t been to VIE in many years so assume if the terminal is designed similar to MUC or FRA then a 777 sitting on a gate may be boarded from the intl concourse upstairs and leave for say JFK or TYO, and on the Schengen level below the same gate position is used for bus boarding.

Austrian quite frequently uses 772 and sometimes also 763 on VIE-FRA hauls. One flight attendant explained that this was done because of capacity needs (the plane was packed indeed).
The crew currency argument seems quite plausible to me as well. Remember that Swiss has introduced the 77W over the last few years and LH Cargo builds its 77F fleet, thus creating a significant need for training and qualification.

That airport can be deceiving. The widebodies you see are boarded from the G gates, the non-Schengen area, which is above F, where you are/were.
Those destinations (INN and BUD) are served with the smaller Dash 8, which is usually parked remotely, so the passengers are going down the stairs into a bus.

INN can indeed handle a 767.
OS flies widebodies to Frankfurt mainly for crew training purposes.

As noted above, it has to do with the airport setup, where 1 jetway can be served by 2 separate departure gates, one above and one below, depending on the destination (Schengen or non-Schengen). MUC has a similar setup as well.

With the LH strike recently OS sent a 777 to FRA as well to cover for LHs flights cancelling.

OS frequently sends 767s and 777s to FRA also without a LH strike
