This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

The UA segments into ACT, BMG, MHK, MOT, and SWO must all be charters. UA and UA* do not serve any of those cities on a regular basis.

Are AC's LAS cuts Max related or due to competition?

I don't think AC YEG-LAS is completely cut, I see it operating in March, April and May. Likely a MAX related reduction.

I am guessing that the AA updates were not picked up for this release. AA updated their schedule last night for March with several adjustments to their dummy schedule that are not reflected here.

Note that these all involve college towns. Doubtless these are college basketball charters.

MOT/IAH was a regular route when the Bakken Boom started. Now things are leveling off to a more normal pace. They may also be shifting this route to the new Williston airport in the near future. As for college town, Minot isn't really a college town. Minot Stae is D2 athletic school, so they wouldn't use charter flights.

Please the NOTE at the beginning of the report. There were problems on the source file side. I’ll try to do an update if they fix it.

I had to look up quine a few of the DL secondary market airport code cutbacks.

Yeah those AC western leisure route cuts are almost certainly temporary MAX-related.

Nice summer adds by AS to SEA-PIT and OMA. I recall someone on here a couple of months ago saying SEA-PIT was a disappointment...obviously not.

This is small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, but I have never seen this route at 4x. Like, ever. It's been cut from 3x to 2x for a while, now they're suddenly doubling it?! Wonder if it's an error. Most UAX flights or even smaller mainline cities go 3x daily. At the moment, I don't see evidence of a 4th bank being added elsewhere.

PHL looses a lot of service in March with some frequencies cut by over 50% too. I personally had a confirmed flight cancelled and the alternative was a near 3 hour difference.

IAD has four major connecting banks, so this simply means ROA has connections to all four banks. I agree that it is surprising to see this route double in capacity. We'll see if this increase lasts in the schedule. However, UA has been beefing up connecting flows through IAD, so I wouldn't be surprised if at least 3x daily sticks during the summer.

I'm only a wee bit surprised AA hasn't added one or two mainline on CLT-AVL, but similar to GSP's increase in capacity AA has added AVL-PHL and AVL-DFW in the last year which lessens the need for it.

Looks like Alaska is just bailing on Dutch harbor for good. They announced through may but now through September? None of the factors of flying there are going to change between now and September. And they are the same as when they flew there for decades prior.

I suspect that PenAir's insurance agency is driving the decision. They likely told them no more Saab 2000's at DUT. AS is probably working on filing the necessary paperwork to sell the Ravn operated route to DUT on their code, but right now that's not possible so they have to pull the flight from their systems. If they get authority to sell that flight then they will refile.

Right now you CAN book a through-flight on AS and Ravn through an OTA or the GDS and I believe AS can sell it if you call reservations.

I believe a lot of pax on DUT-ANC are O&D anyway though, so it's not a huge deal.

Basically, I can see how you would get stuck with basically a choice between SJC-ATL-GSP/SJC-DFW-GSP and maybe the occasional SJC-IAH-GSP.

No it’s a huge connecting market for fisherman and locals traveling out of state. It’s probably 75% connecting.

I’ve been trying to stick to AA for FF miles. Their schedule has been less than convenient. Eastbound, I like to take a midday flight so I don’t have to fight Silicon Valley traffic. There are no good connections at that time. Westbound seems ok. But CLT works much better.

AS seems to be doing very well in OMA. This route was only served 1x CR7 to SEA in 2013 and has since added PDX seasonally and until recently, SAN.

PIT is seeing a 2nd daily being added barely a year after starting the route, which is impressive.

2nd daily mainline SBA-SEA is continuing theirs (and others) recent success on the Central Coast.

They may have removed the flights needed to cut the MAX but left the MAX selling until they decide on a PR strategy surrounding the extension of the grounding. It would be a pretty simple exercise to do so.
