TUL - New Air Service Announcement 12/11

Wed Dec 11, 2019 1:00 am

Per their Facebook page.

Some idea's
Alaska to SEA
American to PHX/PHL
United to EWR
Return of MIA?

However, we are also expecting Southwest to announce their summer schedule tomorrow.

Since WN has its schedule extension, I’m gonna guess TUL-BNA or BWI.

Gonna have to rule out AA on this since they just announced new routes today. Southwest seems the most likely.

That's a good point. I just saw that on the feed somewhere as well. OKC has service to both.

I'd guess it is Southwest but there is no reason AA couldn't announced different routes on different days.

Here were the load factors of WN TUL-MDW in 2015 and 2016:
Jan 2015 - 55.8%
Feb 2015 - 54.8%
Mar 2015 - 74.3%
Apr 2015 - 63.6%
May 2015 - 69.4%
Jun 2015 - 90.5%
Jul 2015 - 94.4%
Aug 2015 - 81.0%
Sep 2015 - 80.3%
Oct 2015 - 80.3%
Nov 2015 - 82.0%
Dec 2015 - 82.7%
Jan 2016 - 55.1%
Feb 2016 - 53.4%
Mar 2016 - 71.4%
Apr 2016 - 81.0%

In addition to WN adding TUL-BWI nonstop service, I could also see WN possibly re-adding TUL-MDW nonstop service on at least a seasonal basis as WN had been able to make TUL-MDW nonstop service work in the past during the summer and fall.

I wouldn't be surprised to see NK announce MCO, LAS, maybe MSY and a few others. They are overdue to announce new cities for the spring.

I agree that AS could add TUL-SEA nonstop service on a E-175 regional jet as there is likely enough O&D between TUL and SEA to easily fill an E-175 regional jet as the PDEW on TUL-SEA was 60 passengers per day in Q2 2019.

I also agree that AA adding TUL-PHX, TUL-PHL, and TUL-MIA nonstop service are possibilities with (a) AA still expanding its PHX and MIA hubs and (b) TUL being one of the largest markets in the U.S. that isn't served nonstop from PHX, TUL, and MIA.

UA adding TUL-SFO nonstop service is a possibility with SFO being one of the top destinations not currently served nonstop from TUL. There is also likely enough demand for daily nonstop service to SFO on a regional jet as the PDEW of TUL-SFO/OAK/SJC was 73 passengers per day in Q2 2019.

I agree that DL adding TUL-LGA nonstop service is a possibility with TUL being one of the largest U.S. markets within the LGA perimeter that doesn't currently have nonstop service to LGA.

TUL-BNA seems to have a tourist draw.

I'm going to guess AS, TUL-SEA, for the following reasons:
> AS generally makes their new-route announcements on Wednesdays;
> AS hasn't announced any new routes since 10/1/2019, and their last new city announced was CMH on 8/29/2018; seems it's about time for some more expansion in 2020;
> the carrier has been loading all kinds of new capacity -- as added daily departures - in MANY existing markets from SEA recently;
> AS already serves OKC from SEA;
> I don't know where TUL ranks on the list of unserved cities out of SEA, but I'd presume it's fairly high up. I wonder if TUL is offering incentives or subsidies?

In any case, good for Tulsa! I'll be watching tomorrow with interest for this announcement as well as WN's summer 2020 schedule release.

My guesses:

TUL-BNA, BWI, MCO or TPA on WN
TUL-LGA on AA or DL
TUL-PHX or MIA on AA

I doubt AS will start TUL-SEA. It seems a little too thin and limited in terms of connectivity, and with AS divorcing AAdvantage, they wouldn't have much marketing heft.

I’ll do it if no one else does:

2x weekly BA 788 LHR-TUL.

Since the merger with NW, it seems that DL doesn't know what to do with the former NW flights to MSP/DTW. DL was flying to MSP/DTW (formerly 2-3 times daily when NW was around), but at some point they just switched to 2x MSP and stopped serving DTW nonstop. They've added and removed flights from TUL to those hubs a number of times since 2010. The DTW connection was really good for European and Asian destinations, as well as connections to NYC, Canada and New England, but I guess they decided most of those places could be served from MSP.

Looks like the announcement is TUL-BWI on Southwest. Nice that Tulsa will now have nonstop service to the Washington area, though I’m not sure how many will use the flight for Washington proper.

I'm headed to Tulsa tomorrow just the weekend (wife needed another round trip flight for A-list). Are there any events or recommendations for places to check out? Basically have saturday afternoon and sunday til about 3.

The Gathering place looks like it is worth checking out and the art museum. Open to other suggestions.

Not awful if you take train to Union Station and are headed to Capitol Hill. Also gives more options to the northeast which Tulsa lacks. It's amazing the disparity of nonstop options for TUL compared to OKC:

WN: DCA, BNA, MDW
DL: DTW
AA:MIA, PHL, PHX, DCA
UA: SFO, EWR, IAD
AS: SEA
Airlines flown: AA, AB, AC, AY, BA, CO, DL, DY, EW, F9, G4, IB, KL, LH, LX, NK, NW, NZ, OS, QF, SN, TP, UA, US, VA, VC, WN, XE

Tulsa is famous among architecture buffs for its amazing collection of art deco buildings. A second and bigger oil boom hit Tulsa at the height of art deco's popularity. Buildings both grand and humble reflect the artistic school. It's almost the Florence of art deco, in that extraordinary wealth was channeled into architectural display, becoming a living urban museum of an artistic school.
Architectural Digest published an introduction to Tulsa's status last summer: https://www.architecturaldigest.com/sto ... chitecture
Wikipedia has an extensive catalogue of the collection that includes fire stations and dry cleaners as well as office buildings here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_A ... ,_Oklahoma
The Tulsa Preservation Commission has a more selective list: https://tulsapreservationcommission.org ... buildings/
I realize not everyone would be interested, but if you are interested in something that makes Tulsa very special, you could do worse than driving around town in a rental car and checking out the collection.

The Gathering Place is very nice, though all the trees and grass will be dormant this time of year. They have an interesting lodge with a fireplace so you can get out of the cold as well as a cafe. Gilcrease Museum has some of the finest western and Native American art in the country. Also check out the Brady and Blue Dome districts for cool restaurants and bars as well as The Woody Guthrie Center. Philbrook Museum has some great exhibits as well. Cherry Street has a nice brewhouse called The Roosevelt. Enjoy!
