El Al announces direct flight between Tokyo, Japan and Tel Aviv, Israel from March 2020

Thu Dec 12, 2019 8:46 am

El Al has announced a new direct flight route that will be launched between Tokyo, Japan and Tel Aviv, Israel. This is the first time a direct flight route has existed between Israel and Japan. Launching in March 2020, the flights will operate three times a week on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner.

Yes, this was announced back in the summer already that LY will serve NRT. Great addition to their network with a busy summer 2020 season for Japan coming up.

How will they fly to Tokyo, will they go down the Red Sea, over the subcontinent up though China and in to Tokyo, or up toward Italy, central Europe to Scandinavia then over Russia? Or are they on good terms with Turkey which would allow them to fly over there air space then into Russian airspace into Japan?

El Al overfly Turkey all the time (see LY75/76 TLV-HKG, for example).

I can imagine the flight using the same route as KE957/958 (ICN-TLV), so basically up into Turkey then east across the -stans, China, then down the Yellow Sea to South Korea, then fly southeast from there following the path of your typical ICN-NRT flights.

As mentioned above, the most likely route would fly north over Turkey (no problems whatsoever with that). From there, the shortest route that doesn’t overfly North Korea would pass near Vladivostok. Compared to the absolute shortest possible route (which would overfly Syria but still tries to avoid North Korea), this routing only extends the flight path by a little bit (less than 5% more distance).

Generally speaking, flights to this sector (say PEK, PVG, NRT, ICN, etc.) are not materially affected (i.e., are affected by less than 5% extra distance) by ELAL’s inability to overfly Arab countries.
