FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Some interesting summer adds by DL out of ATL in GEG and BOI. Also looks like they’re increasing ATL-West capacity in general with places like BZN, DEN, and SLC

Some say that WS always planned to add Calgary-Boston but AC came along to ‘steal their thunder.’ Conspiracy theories abound.

Probably intended to bolster SEA in those markets by increasing their general presence.

I see UA is still adjusting its U.S.- Australia IATA summer schedule. Just last month UA announced IAH-SYD would operate daily in 2020 and LAX-SYD would return to daily service for IATA summer. This past summer (2019) UA's LAX-SYD operated 3x weekly and IAH-SYD was 4x weekly. With this new adjustment to the adjustment it seem as though IAH-SYD will operated 6x weekly instead of the previously announced daily service while LAX-SYD will operated 4x weekly.

The adjustment to our SYD flights is in addition to the adjustment to our U.S.-MEL flights. SFO-MEL was supposed to be seasonal UA has made it year around 3x weekly however for IATA summer 2020 UA will reduce LAX-MEL service to 4x weekly. According to UA this slight adjustment still equates to daily service on UA metal to MEL from the U.S. during the time frame mentioned.

Indeed some impressive DL adds with ATL-BOI/GEG.

Looks like DL had to fold on RDU-MSY with WN, NK, and F9 on the route too.

And I’m surprised DL wasn’t already flying SLC-MEM with it being a former hub. Should do well with no competition.

And a lot of YOY adds for UA going South, I wonder if these will all stick.

The DL adds to places like BOI and GEG are all about adding capacity during peak summer to tourism and leisure related markets. Summer tourism is hotter than ever in the Rockies for the recreational opportunities. Particularly for those wanting to escape the heat and humidity of the southeast and Florida.

Nice to see DL back on SLC-MEM. I’m surprised they didn’t at least throw a 76-seater at it after dehubbing MEM.

The adds from ATL to BOI, BZN and GEG are year round so it is more about DL seeing opportunity to serve these markets from the world’s largest hub on a business/market strength basis.

Keep in mind with they have said two things recently that are related and starting to be reflected in the OAG schedule updates for 2020 flying:

1) "We (DL) are going to fly the most capacity ever in the history of the airline in Summer 2020"
2) "Capacity growth in 2020 is primarily be in the core interio hubs (ATL, DTW, MSP, SLC)"

Now, a lot of that growth is coming through upgauging (eg., 76 seaters to A220 & MD88/90 738/320 to 739/A321) but you are starting to see additional frequencies and opportunistic seasonal additions starting to show-up.
Stuff like ATL-GEG/BOI, SLC-MEM; additional frequencies on ATL-DEN, SLC-BNA

Thanks enilria!

Surprised B6 hasn’t yet loaded the looming LGA/BOS changes.

Is NK abandoning EWR-DR? That would be a win for B6 and a bit surprising too.

UA seems to be growing in some leisure/VFR markets down south from EWR. Perhaps trying to deter B6/NK if they get more gate access.

Next summer BOSAUS will be 3x B6, 2x DL/AA, AND 1x WN. This doesn’t seem sustainable year-round for any carrier.

All very true but the ATL-BOI/BZN/GEG are selling indefinitely through the current selling schedule in November. There are very few tourists in November and these three markets are three of their largest markets they don’t serve from ATL in any season. This is an investment in their already inherent strengths in both ends of these routes.

Question: The majority of the list has the format hub-to-spoke, but there is the occasional listing that is spoke-to-hub for the same airline. Is there a significance to that or is it a quirk of the system?

Yes, it’s a year-round route. Runway repairs impacting widebody aircraft ops scheduled from April through mid-June; route resumes around June 17 or 18 IIRC.

Thanks again enilria for delivering this so early. Looks like you updated the script for Puerto Rico!

so not exactly 2x daily for AA starting off both routes. There must be some AUS corporate contract at stake here. Looks like huge bloodbath in both cases.

AC EWR-YVR JUN 1.0>2.0[1.0] JUL 1.0>2[1.0] AUG 1.0>2[1.0] SEP 1.0>2[1.0]
AC PHL-YUL MAY 1.8>3[1.8] JUN 1.9>3[1.8] JUL 1.9>3[1.9] AUG 1.8>3[1.9] SEP 1.9>3[1.8]

AC just continues to get stronger in the transborder markets out of its top 3 hubs. If they only flew JFK-YVR, that'd be nice

AS EUG-SEA JUN 4>5[4] JUL 4>5[4] AUG 4>5[4]
AS MKE-SEA MAY 1.0>1.3[1.0] JUN 1.0>2[1.0] JUL 1.0>2[1.0] AUG 1.0>2[1.0] SEP 1.0>1.3[1.0]
AS SAN-SEA JUN 8>9[8] JUL 8>9[8]

This is seriously a lot of extra capacity out of SEA in summer time on every route. What the aircraft doing for rest of the year? Some of the changes they made for next summer i can't imagine is sustainable through most of the year.

CA PEK-SFO APR 1.4>1.0[1.4] MAY 1.5>1.0[1.5] JUN 1.4>1.0[1.4] JUL 1.5>1.0[1.4] AUG 1.4>1.0[1.4] SEP 1.4>1.0[1.3]

wow, can't even do more than 1x daily on such a large market.

**DL ATL-BOI JUL 0>0.8[0] AUG 0>1.0[0] SEP 0>1.0[0]
**DL ATL-GEG JUL 0>0.8[0] AUG 0>1.0[0] SEP 0>0.9[0]

here is a serious question. What would be the PDEW on these 2 routes? I'd put the over and under at 5.
DL AUS-BOS JUN 1.0>1.7[0.8] JUL 1.0>2[0.9] AUG 1.0>2[0.9] SEP 1.0>2[0.9]

so funny this retaliation came before B6 one got locked in. BOS-AUS is becoming the new BOS-BUF/PIT.

I didn't know DL was switching to the new airport. Were they required to?
**DL DTW-PEK APR 1.0>0[0.8] MAY 1.0>0[1.0] JUN 1.0>0[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[0.9]
**DL DTW-PKX APR 0>1.0[0] MAY 0>1.0[0] JUN 0>1.0[0] JUL 0>1.0[0] AUG 0>1.0[0] SEP 0>1.0[0]

yeah, what are they doing here? Giving up the high yield for the low yield airport just for some connection? SEA/DTW to secondary China airport market is about as price sensitive and low yielding as it get.

DL MCI-SEA JUL 1.0>1.7[0.9] AUG 1.0>1.8[1.0] SEP 0.9>1.8[0.8]

interesting, DL is matching some of these AS add out of SEA.
NK EWR-SDQ FEB 1.0>0[1.0] MAR 1.0>0[1.0] APR 1.0>0[1.0] MAY 1.0>0[1.0] JUN 0.3>0[1.0]
NK EWR-SJU FEB 1.0>2.0[0] MAR 1.0>2.0[0] APR 1.0>2.0[0] MAY 1.0>2.0[0]

NK MCO-SJU FEB 2.2>3.2[2.5] MAR 2.0>3.0[2.0] APR 2.3>3.3[2.0] MAY 3.0>4[2.7]

quite interesting that NK is adding to SJU at SDQ's expense. Now NK's SDQ presence is down to FLL, which itself is a problem market for them. I would not be surprised if they exit SDQ.

UA EWR-SJU MAY 1.5>2.1[1.3] JUN 1.9>2.9[1.9] JUL 2.0>3.0[2.0] AUG 1.5>2.5[1.6] SEP 1.0>2.0[1.0]

a lot of extra capacity on this route next summer.

There will be hundreds of XXX-ATL flights by DL from which they can connect. DL runs MSP-BOI/GEG but doesn't have non-stops from DTW, so ATL serves the Southeast and beyond.

I think it's come and gone at least a couple of times previously.

With the additions of the ATL frequencies out west, I'm surprised that ATL-JAC hasn't gone to more than 1x per week during the summer. I know JAC is well-served via SLC and MSP, and that it's a different market than BOI or GEG, but it seems like it could support more flight during the summer season.

The OAG report shows flight totals as fractions of a day. So 0.4 is approximately 3/7 of a daily flight and 0.6 is about 4/7. In other words, 3x and 4x per week. So it looks like last summer's schedule is now in place.

I don't see it reflected here, but DL has pulled the plug on DTW-AVL/BGR/BZN and it appears the plug is pulled for SRQ next fall when service originally kicked back up.

It is alphabetical by city code. Simple as that. That is why there will never be a IAH-IAD listing. ;)

There will be hundreds of XXX-ATL flights by DL from which they can connect. DL runs MSP-BOI/GEG but doesn't have non-stops from DTW, so ATL serves the Southeast and beyond.

Yes, it’s obviously designed for connections, but both flights are long low O&D flights that probably could be more logically connected by other hubs. Southeast to northwest flight overflows other hubs and backtracks origins for much of the country. Would make sense for Deep South originating cities.

For the most part, Air China and Star Alliance members are staying at PEK while oneworld and SkyTeam airlines are moving to PKX. A few carriers are operating to both for the time being. Unaffiliated carriers may or may not have to move to PKX from PEK as far as I know unless Beijing tells them otherwise.

Thanks as always for your weekly OAG thread.

I agree with CanesFan......the data would be a LOT more useful & easier to read if it were ordered hub-to-spoke as its half-alpha to begin with.

Anytime you’re running half-alpha reports in Network it’s output is hub-to-spoke.

As a concrete example.....had it been hub-to-spoke, UA’s summer additions would have been easier to see (IAD-BGR/MSN/TVC)

Hey, it’s that way in the thread's subject line! Why not continue the format below?

Thank you for listening,

Dan

As for PKX, aren’t all Skyteam airlines moving the majority of their ops to the new airport with PEK being the primary domain of Star carriers?

Being as ATL is the 9th largest metro area in the US, I’m gonna guess it’s a bit more than 5...

Next summer BOSAUS will be 3x B6, 2x DL/AA, AND 1x WN. This doesn’t seem sustainable year-round for any carrier.

The number of seats for Summer 2020 on AUS-BOS, will be over double the seats offered in Summer 2019. I have a feeling WN will drop this route, which is exactly what AA and DL would like to see as it erodes WN FF base w/o connections to Northeast if the drop both EWR and BOS.

RE: BOI/GEG-ATL

Delta has flown BOI-ATL before. It isn’t that amazing of an add, but something the city has been wanting back. Surprised I haven’t seen any local fan fare about it.

Also, BOI and GEG are completely different markets than BZN. They aren’t comparable. BOI and GEG aren’t tourist destinations and the nearest touristy ski resort to BOI is Sun Valley.

I am equally shocked. Everytime I have done this redeye the plane has been full. I know it isn’t a scientific sampling, nor do full planes mean $$$$ but I am surprised.

Very low yield - they can probably make more money moving the plane elsewhere.

WN is probably the weakest link here. They are very strong in Austin but not so much in Boston. I see them being the first to cave. B6 really doesn't have a choice but to respond as they have the most to lose from resurgent legacies reclaiming their turf.

As for AA, I guess they finally woke up and smelled the coffee. They've been so anti focus city and point to point flying for so long which has given DL inroads into Austin. Travelers out of Austin aren't going to want to connect through DFW or IAH when they have non-stop options to the places they want to go on DL. However, American and United both have very strong frequent flyer bases in the Austin area. Unless you're traveling to one of Delta's focus cities all the time, it's going to be more convenient to connect through DFW, or IAH as both are close enough to minimize backtracking and out-of-the-way itineraries. Delta has hubs close to their focus cities in RDU and Boston that give travelers options when there isn't a non-stop from the focus city. Austin presents a problem because there are no Delta hubs near Austin which was can result in backtracking, out-of-the-way itineraries, or not being able to serve markets because the destination has to be overflown to get to a hub.

Austin is a growing market and Delta is arguably the most well-run airline in the United States, if not the world at this point. I have no doubt that they have done their homework. However, AAs frequent flyer base is a beast to compete with. If AA decides they really want to start competing in Austin they could give Delta a run for their money. That being said, AA really needs to work on their operational issues, and their product / passenger experience. These non-stop focus City routes only work when the operation runs on time most of the time. Delta is very good at this, American has made great strides since the summer, but only time will tell if this is permanent or just a result of more slack in the fleet meaning less problems during the autumn months. I also have some concerns that the Austin air travel market may be overheating. There is quite a bit of capacity there relative to the size of the city. I flew through there last month and it was a miserable experience too. That terminal just wasn't designed to have this many passengers go through it. It was bursting at the seams. Even the pre-check line took me longer than it normally does. the surrounding infrastructure is struggling too. It was a real pain to get a cab after I landed, and getting to the terminal when I left was a nightmare. It was honestly worse than my most recent trip to New York via Newark. It will be interesting to see how all of this plays out.

If Austin keeps growing like it has been, I think it actually might be ripe for a legacy hub or at least a small one. This would require some serious infrastructure investment as a midfield concourse would have to be added to the Barbara Jordan terminal. If the investment is made, and DL actually starts to build up a hub, things will get really interesting for AA and UA.

DL DTW-SJC JUN 1.7>1.0[0.8]

Once again, DL leaves me baffled as to their “focus” strategy while cutting a frequency from a supposed focus city to a hub...at the beginning of summer?

so not exactly 2x daily for AA starting off both routes. There must be some AUS corporate contract at stake here. Looks like huge bloodbath in both cases.

Dell is one possibility for the company involved - Dell HQ is in Austin with major operations in BOS area (former EMC in Hopkinton) and SJC area (VMware in Palo Alto). I work out of Hopkinton, visiting both Austin and Palo Alto every so often - for Palo Alto from BOS, I'll take SJC over SFO every day of the week and twice on Sunday :D.

This is an investment in their already inherent strengths in both ends of these routes.

More likely they will shorten them to seasonal at some point soon.

BOI is seeing record traffic in 2019. The airport is planning all kinds of expansion to support more passengers and more flights. And the Boise Metro Area economy and population are growing strongly. There is already nonstop service to ORD, MDW, DFW, and IAH on other carriers with most flying year-round. DL is late to the table in restoring BOI-ATL. It was bound to happen eventually. And it makes perfect sense given ATL will open up scores of connections not available via SLC, LAX, MSP, or SEA. This route is intended to fly year-round and I expect it will do very well. BOI has been working with DL for years to get it back. Finally, it happened!!

I talked to someone who works up there for DL and apparently they'll be seeing seats go up but amount of flights go down including the dismissal of Saturday special flights. He said seats will increase to "core hubs" like ATL, MSP, & SLC. A few other specifics I can't say publicly, but he used to work at CVG and is seeing a potentially similar trend happening with gates being closed and staffing not being replaced when relocating/retiring, etc.
