December 15, 2019 HA#11 SFO-HNL Unusual Departure Route from SFO

Sun Dec 15, 2019 8:30 pm

Saw Hawaiian Airlines Flight #11 depart this morning from SFO on the 1s. The A330-200 made its typical left then made a right turn over Ocean Beach at 2,500 feet over the Golden Gate Bridge and along the SF waterfront towards Emeryville and then a turn and back out over the Golden Gate. Once passing the Golden Gate, the plane started ascending towards cruise altitude and HNL.

Was there civilian air traffic in the way? Special new bay departure route?

Something similar happened to me once while going from SFO to KOA. I thought something must have been wrong but sort of like this, they turned back and got on course. I was concerned that we were returning to the airport. I never got a chance to ask the pilots when we arrived. They stayed in the cockpit as I departed.

Double pass over the bridge has me wondering if it could be publicity? In-flight photos for advertising maybe?

I had a pilot give folks a sightseeing tour over the Olympic Mountains near Seattle once.

The usual Bay Tour is climb and maintain 3000, remain over the water, depart Golden Gate Bridge heading 230 or some such. Never seen one go east over the Golden Gate until today.

Could it be to waste some time if they took off too early to join the oceanic track? They could have been in line for takeoff and rather than waiting on tarmac and due to congestion they took off and made the additional maneuvering to spend some time to arrive at the entry point as scheduled (in case an earlier timeslot cannot be secured)

It’s windy in SoCal but not Santa Ana. Could that have something to do with it? Our regional wind weather usually interacts.

As Pinto said, this is "The Bay Tour". We can request this on pushback with SFO ground. By the looks of the flight path (it was strange), the standard path off the 1's may have interfered with an OAK departure, so some vectoring was required. That, or the crew wanted both sides to get a view of the city. It's a nice gesture by the crew and Hawaiian in my opinion.

May I ask what the winds in SoCal would have anything to do with this?

That definitely is one interesting departure! Almost something one would use for publicity shots such as this:

I know it's not, but it reminds me of it.

The photo (with conveniently removed copyright bar btw  ) was taken at the Fleet Week. So yeah, that was a photo-op, not a real flight. They don't fly that low anymore, sadly..

May I ask why you don’t read the entirety of a very short post?
