Frontier Announcement at MIA Tomorrow

Tue Dec 17, 2019 7:40 pm

Major Frontier Airlines expected at MIA tomorrow, with the CEO in town.

https://www.thenextmiami.com/frontier-a ... -tomorrow/

Frontier has had an on again/off again relationship with MIA, starting strong, drawing down to pretty much to Denver and Philadelphia, and then drawing it back up this year.

The current Frontier network from Miami is:

Atlanta
Boston
Chicago-O'Hare
Cincinnati
Cleveland
Denver
Detroit
Hartford
Las Vegas
New York-LaGuardia
Newark
Philadelphia
Raleigh
San Juan

F9 adding MIA-SFO nonstop service is a possibility with MIA-FLL/SFO-OAK-SJC being one of the top routes out of MIA/FLL without nonstop ULCC service.

The PDEW of MIA-SFO was 408 passengers/day in Q2 2019, and the PDEW between MIA/FLL and SFO/OAK/SJC was 1029 passengers/day in Q2 2019.

While AA is currently the only airline serving LAX nonstop from MIA and while MIA-LAX is one of the top domestic routes that isn't currently served nonstop out of MIA on an airline other than AA, LAX is also already served nonstop out of FLL on AS, B6, and NK.

While both WN and NK already serve FLL nonstop from BWI, F9 adding MIA-BWI is a possibility with BWI being one of the top destinations that F9 doesn't currently serve nonstop from the MIA/FLL market and with neither WN nor NK currently serving MIA.

Could it be a new base announcement?
I can't see B.Biffle coming to town to announce a new seasonal route to BWI.

In addition to F9 adding MIA-BWI nonstop service, I think that F9 might also possibly add MIA-SFO nonstop service or extend MIA-CVG nonstop service past April 22nd in tomorrow's announcement.

They’d have to put me in a cryogenic chamber to fly Frontier coast to coast.

They’re probably going to announce MIA as a new base.

I expect a bloodbath between AA, Frontier, and Spirit.

I noticed that too, but that's far from a major announcement. BWI is holding a press conference to announce the service and the Frontier CEO is in MIA. F9 would just be connecting two existing dots on a map on an already-served route, competing against AA, NK, and WN on BWI-MIA/FLL.

Over 10 from TPA are “newer” adds in the past few years and have lasted more than one season. There’s countless other examples around their network. Yes, they cut a lot but keep a lot too.

While you may be correct, I am thinking it will be more AA and F9. Another poster on another thread made the comment that the past few years F9 has not been deterred in taking on American at their fortress locations. They went into PHL, and American hub, in a pretty big way and have managed to make some headway there. They have added a few flights at DFW, which has been tougher with NK already entrenched there. Then there is PHX; another major AA hub; where Frontier has been adding flights against the established AA with continued success.

Rumors have been flying around for a few months about more flying out of MIA and the announcement tomorrow will probably validate that. There is also an expectation F9 will establish a pilot and flight attendant base too. These will likely start slow, but gradually build up over the next couple of years, much like what happened in PHL.

There may be some new information in regards to expanded EWR flying for later this spring. Guess we will know more tomorrow.

Weird time of year to be announcing MIA routes. If they were doing this in July / August, I would imagine a ton of winter seasonal routes to PVD, BUF, BTV, PWM, ALB ect.

Frontier barely flies Portland—Denver. I don’t think Portland—South Florida on Frontier would happen or succeed.

F9 did MIA-PVD but came in with daily service. Loads were decent but fares seemed low. This winter, they are in BOS and BDL but less than daily each. This is a pattern I think PVD can support. 2-3 weekly off season with 3-4 winter.

F9 launches the South American dartboard, with the darts landing on Cuzco (Peru), Armenia (Colombia), Paramaribo (Suriname), Cochabamba (Bolivia), Cuenca (Ecuador), Iquitos (Peru), Santa Marta (Colombia), and Arequipa (Peru).

But with all likelihood, it'll probably just be a few domestic dartboard adds. MIA-BWI may be one of them since BWI is having an announcement too but I suspect there could be more from MIA.

I believe Philadelphia and Chicago have operated uninterrupted as well. LaGuardia has switched back and forth between seasonal and year-round and now year-round again.

Since my mandate as a SAN-fan requires it, I officially hope we might see MIA-SAN added by F9! Since AS, WN nor NK seem inclined to add MIA/FLL from SAN to compete with AA (from MIA) or B6 from Lauderdale, it seems F9 might again be the one to try; it wouldn't be the first time they've moved on un- or under-served markets from SDIA that the others weren't inclined to begin.

Sorry not related to MIA but related to your ghost booking comment, on your suspicion pattern, does OMA-ORD fit the ghost booking thing you’re seeing? I feel like it does.

When I was anticipating new SRQ routes last summer and the summer of 2018, I noticed certain things. Turns out I was right on a few of them

Again...no concrete proof...because they could be upcoming connections available and not a nonstop flight

No idea why, same thing for other Florida destinations from SYR (other than Orlando).

I didnt know F9 had a season BUF - MIA. I guess i missed that? I mean I guess its on their destination website still and JAX is off it. So I guess some truth to that.

F9 though was really successful BUF - MIA when it first launched.

BUF never returned, as did more than half of the stuff they have announced in recent years.

Half of what gets announced today (not just MIA but the other F9 stuff too) won’t be around in a year or two either

The cruise port is crazy seasonal... I can watch them my balcony and I’d say the lowest is around 14/week during hurricane season and peaks at like 7 a day on the weekends in the winter.

One more biased rant... I see they they canned PVD-RDU/DEN (both of which ran 90% all summer) so they can add BOS MIA daily on the off season with a schedule that doesn’t even work for said cruises (early Miami departure) because their gate at BOS requires them to be out by noon... good luck with that

Not sure of the reason, but they don't readily post monthly passenger numbers. Suffice it to say the cruise port drives millions of air passengers each year into MIA.

I'm going to guess MIA-PWM? Last year was the first season for Frontier in PWM with flights to MCO, TPA, RSW. They all held through this year and RSW has even increased from twice weekly to four times weekly this season. I was on one of the RSW flights last week and both waysthe flights were filled. However, I don't know how they make money when one way tickets on 1,300 mile flights sell for $39?

I found new flights nonstop from Miami to:
Austin
Baltimore
Islip
Trenton
Ontario
San Salvador
Santo Domingo
Guatemala City

Note that ISP and TTN are currently served year-round from FLL, and are simply transferring from FLL to MIA (again) while FLL becomes a seasonal (or discontinued?) station.
