Car crash at SRQ

Thu Dec 19, 2019 2:07 pm

Overnight a pickup truck went thru the fence at SRQ, drove airside on the perimeter fence and crashed thru the wall in the baggage claim finally stopping at the what looks like Enterprise car rental desk. Luckily only one person was there at 2:51 am and was not hurt. I remember few years ago a drunk lady took a joy ride on the other side of SRQ and damaged some private aircraft, and I have seen multiple lost control cars into fence at SRQ. I think SRQ needs a boarder wall at this point!

Crazy that it wasn't the perimeter fence, nor any of the terminal walls, or even the baggage claim carousel that stopped the momentum of the truck but the counter at the rental car desk. I want to know who built that counter.

Glad nobody was hit in the chaos. Wonder what the story is behind the driver.

Over 100 MPH??? Yeah, that truck has a lot of damage.
I assume the driver will blame the incident on medical issue or mechanical failure on the truck.

I usually get up to 60 on that stretch of route 41, but have seen people go way faster. I just can’t believe he kept that speed up on all the turns to hit the terminal. Now one of the 3 baggage claims (Deltas?) is out so that will be fun for everyone there during the peak.

On the other side old 15th on the turn with the viewing parking there have been few cars go into the fence. Usually it is drunk drivers, but it seems it’s an issue for SRQ.

Looks like baggage claim 1 will be out of service. Is there a contingency plan to deal with the influx of travelers during the upcoming days?

I would imagine the other two baggage claims can handle the load just fine. Alternatively, you just stagger the flights leading to slightly higher drop times.

That's insane ... that truck came through there dragging enough air pressure to pop the safety interlocks on the sliding doors at the exit next to the rental cars.

Must have scared the you-know-what out of all those agents working those counters!

I know where you're going with that; but yes, it looks like a write-off, the frame has damage (look at the front wheels, they're pushed back), the roof structure has damage as well.

Haha. I learned early on in my visits to Florida you better drive as fast as everyone even if it’s 25 over the speed limit because you will be pushed out of the lane.

I flew out of SRQ today and even returned my rental car at the counter. To their credit, they did a good job boarding and fixing everything up quite quickly...and this was even at 1 pm. The National Rental car counter, which took the impact, was even operational

Can't imagine what was going through the car rental agent's mind at the 0:03 time marker. This could have been very serious if it was done during a heavy arrival time with passengers at baggage claim 1.

True. But maybe he wouldn’t have been as drunk and coked up at that time of day.

It just shows that safety precautions need to be improved. Imagine a terrorist or crazy person can easily drive into the terminal .. I expect some sort of perimeter changes will be made ...

Well now it's too early to speculate about a write off. It's up to the insurance company to see if it's financially viable to repair the truck or not. The truck isn't very old and could still operate for years after repairs :duck:
