FAQ

AS OF JULY 2018 THERE ARE CHANGES TO THE FORMAT OF THIS REPORT...SEE BELOW

WHAT IS THIS REPORT?
This compares departures for sale THIS WEEK for the stated period versus what was for sale LAST WEEK...prior year departures are now shown in brackets e.g. [0].

THE SCHEDULES SHOWN HERE CHANGE AFTER YOU POST???
-To improve is to change; to be perfect is to change often---Winston Churchill. This is data the carriers filed at the point in time it was captured. It's changed since then. You are just going to have to live with it.

HOW DO I READ IT?
XXX-YYY DEC 4>5[4] JAN 4>5[4]
XXX Departure IATA code, YYY Arrival IATA code, Month, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of last week, Average Departures/Day over the month for sale as of this week, in brackets is the number of Average Departures/Day over the month that were scheduled one year earlier. So, it means that the listed airline changed the frequency between the two airports to add from 4 to 5 roundtrips in December and January. It also means that there were 4 roundtrips the prior year in each month. No other months were changed. I average two directions.

WHAT ABOUT CARRIERS THAT DON'T PUBLISH A SCHEDULE 9 MONTHS IN ADVANCE?
NEW CHANGE-Sometimes airlines do not load their schedules for the entire 330 day standard sales window. Southwest and many LCCs load their schedules for as little as 5 months into the future. When these flight are extended into a new sales month, it becomes a "schedule change". Previously, I have manually deleted these in many cases and replaced them with a Year-Over-Year compare. Effective immediately, this will now change. When a flight is loaded from 0 departures X departures, where X was the same the prior year, the record will not be shown. For example, if Delta loaded ATL-EGE MAR 0>1(1), it would not be shown because this additional flight does not represent a real year-over-year addition. Similarly, if B6 extended their schedule a record like this ATL-BOS JUL 0>4(4) would not be shown. It will be shown if the flight frequency changed from the prior year. So B6 ATL-BOS JUL 0>3(4) would be shown. If a partial month was loaded in a core schedule that became a full schedule month, those changes may be shown under this logic. For example, WN BNA-SEA 0.3>2(2). Because only a fraction of the month was previously loaded for sale, these changes will not be filtered out. I may, however, manually remove them to declutter.

HOW ARE THE DAILY DEPARTURES CALCULATED?
This report uses total operations for the month listed, divided over the days in the month. The following criteria are used to show a change: 1) The change must be at least 6 roundtrips per month with no exceptions, 2) changes of at least 6/week are always shown, 3) routes that are added or dropped are shown subject to the change minimum, and 4) in all other cases routes must change by 20% to be shown. For example, if a route changed from 21/week to 18/week it would not be shown because the change is -14.3%. This is done to filter minor changes that occur in large numbers.

WHAT ARE THE FRACTIONAL FLIGHTS?
Flights that do not operate every day of the month create fractional service. If the route has more than 2 daily flights, departures are rounded, but in cases of less than 2 departures per day a fraction is shown. For example, if a flight operates 4 times in April it will show 4/30=0.133=0.1. Also , a flight that only operates once per week may vary between 0.1 and 0.2 because a weekday may repeat either 4 or 5 times depending on the month.

THOSE FLIGHTS AREN'T DELTA, THEY ARE SKYWEST
This report only shows the marketing code. It is too complicated to show all the operators.

THE FREQUENCIES MAY HAVE CHANGED AS YOU SHOW, BUT THE SEATS DIDNT CHANGE BECAUSE OF EQUIPMENT SWAPS
Seats are not shown. That is a natural weakness of a frequency based report, but it provides something to discuss below.

THIS LOOKS LIKE AN ERROR?
The carriers file the schedules. They do make mistakes. Most of the mistakes I have seen are either related to code shares not being marked as "duplicates" or carriers filing flights with invalid data such as equipment codes that are not standard or overlapping schedule periods that see the same flight number in two places at once. These cause flights to not appear.

CHARTERS?
Lately charters have been showing up in the database. I have no idea if that will continue.

I marked some of the ones I thought were interesting with an "*".

Are these the SFO flight cuts that support the contention posted a few days ago that AS was cutting SFO and returning to its SEA focus?

AS will upgrade their ABQ-PDX flight to mainline Mar. 19. Will most likely be seasonal.

Looks like some of the AS cuts are summer seasonal cuts FLL-LAX, PAE-PSP, MSY-SFO, & OGG-SMF.

The AS changes to the summer schedule are intended to grow capacity at SEA to maintain gates (The Port of Seattle allocates them based on the number of seats scheduled) while also increasing the frequency of flights on intra-CA markets. Aircraft previously used on other intra-CA markets are upgauging SEA and also adding 15 new mainline frequencies to/from SEA. And as noted, many of these adjustments are seasonal only until new capacity can come online.

Those MAX 9s can't get here fast enough.

good morning, thanks for this great update enilria. So much changes here!

not just JFK cuts. These important BOS business market cuts are quite striking too. And same with the continued cuts on DCA shuttles. What's going here.

but yes, the JFK cuts are the worst.

AS BOS-LAX JUN 1.4>1.0[1.8] JUL 2>1.0[2] AUG 1.5>1.0[1.8]

1x in the peak summer. How much longer is this route sticking around?
AS BOS-SEA JUN 3>4[3] JUL 3>4[3] AUG 3>4[3] SEP 3>4[3]

These 2 are perfect example of cutting cali to support SEA. A route that is well below system margins year round gets more capacity.
AS BWI-LAX SEP 0.7>1.0[1.0]
This looks like it might be gone forever after mid-August
*AS BWI-SAN AUG 1.0>0.5[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[0.9]

not really a surprise on a hub to hub route for WN. I'm surprised BWI-LAX sticks around though

**AS FLL-LAX MAY 1.0>0.6[1.2] JUN 1.0>0[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[1.0]

Another example of mint killing AS. And people thought I was full of it 2 years back when I called this. So, B6 has now made AS retreat to running FLL-LAX/SFO to only running during holiday periods and BOS-LAX to 1x daily. Back in 2016, VX was running this 3x in peak season and B6 was a 2x all year. Now, B6 is at 4x daily all year and AS is gone.

AS LAS-LAX MAY 3>2[4] JUN 4>2[4] JUL 4>2[4] AUG 4>2[4] SEP 4>2[4]
AS LAS-SFO MAY 6>5[6] JUN 7>4[6] JUL 7>4[7] AUG 6>4[7] SEP 6>4[5]

Not a great sign for FF and LAX "hub" if the largest leisure destination is down to 2x daily and SFO is down to 4x daily.

AS MSY-SEA MAY 1.6>2[2] JUN 1.0>1.6[1.2]
SFO loses more of its East-West flights. Moves back toward North-South.
**AS MSY-SFO MAY 1.0>0.6[1.0] JUN 1.0>0[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[1.0]

yep, all around cutting cali to support SEA. Pretty obvious strategy here. But if AS management feels like this will allow them to beat DL in SEA. Why not do this? These can all get added back if they don't have to worry about DL down the road.

AS OAK-OGG AUG 0.8>0.6[1.0] SEP 1.0>0.6[1.0]
**AS OGG-SMF MAY 1.0>0.6[1.0] JUN 1.0>0[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[1.0]

what are the odds they stick around in the OAK/SMF-HI market? not good.

*AS SAN-SFO JUN 5>8[5] JUL 5>8[5] AUG 5>8[6] SEP 5>8[4]
**AS SAN-SLC MAY 1.0>0.6[1.0] JUN 1.0>0[1.0] JUL 1.0>0[1.0] AUG 1.0>0[1.0] SEP 1.0>0[1.0]

interesting that they added frequency in both SAN/LAX-SFO and cut out SAN/LAX-SLC. Looks like they've given up on the idea of using SLC to retaliate against DL. I'm amazed it has lasted as long as it did.

AS SEA-SFO JUN 13>14[12] JUL 13>14[13] AUG 12>14[15]
AS SEA-SJC JUN 8>9[8] JUL 8>9[8] AUG 8>9[8] SEP 8>9[8]

so two theme here.
1) Cut back any-none west coast underperforming route out of Cali/PDX.
2) keep building up SEA and their intra-westcoast markets.

Been a pretty interesting couple of month out of AS route planning. Can't blame them for these strategies.

*B6 BOS-LGA MAY 5>9[5] JUN 5>9[5] JUL 5>9[4] AUG 5>9[5] SEP 1.3>2[5]
FLL cutback to add BOS freq. Where did the other 2 rt slots come from?
*B6 FLL-LGA MAY 4>2[5] JUN 3>2[4] JUL 3>2[4] AUG 3>2[4] SEP 0.8>0.5[5]
B6 LGA-MCO MAY 3>2[4] JUN 3>2[4] JUL 3>2[4] AUG 3>2[4] SEP 0.8>0.5[4]
B6 LGA-PBI MAY 3>2[3] JUN 3>2[3] JUL 3>2[3] AUG 3>2[3] SEP 0.8>0.5[3]

both MCO/PBI are losing a flight also. tbh, I think this is a bad way to go. Either cut MCO or PBI. No reason to leave FLL to 2x daily.

DL BOS-MCO MAY 4>3[3] JUN 4>3[3] JUL 4>3[3] AUG 4>3[3] SEP 4>3[3]

remember that update where DL announced adding flights in the BOS-Florida market and PUJ? All have now been rolled back to previous levels aside from BOS-MIA. Not so easy competing with LCC/ULCCs in these Florida markets when you don't dominate the other end.

While it is true that I see what AS is doing as "cutting" SFO in that its position as an E-W hub (which is why they bought VX) is clearly fading as time moves on, I will agree that departures-wise it is more or less neutral. Having said that, AS is basically retreating from ambitions to be a national carrier and de facto building the case for a future merger with B6 which I am not a fan of, but seems more inevitable with each passing month.

Thanks as always enilria. FYI the other two B6 routes funding B6’s big LGA-BOS increase are 1 RT each to MCO and PBI are cut.

Lol, I thought today’s OAG would be tiny right before Christmas. Boy was l wrong lol.

Happy Holidays to all.

I don't think they will get a second chance in LAX or SFO. The cost of brand visibility is too high. Once people stop looking for their flights they will never get them back IMHO.

what are the odds they stick around in the OAK/SMF-HI market? not good.

Agreed

interesting that they added frequency in both SAN/LAX-SFO and cut out SAN/LAX-SLC. Looks like they've given up on the idea of using SLC to retaliate against DL. I'm amazed it has lasted as long as it did.

I had the same thoughts on SLC. It was almost symbolic of the SLC build up being a huge mistake.

remember that update where DL announced adding flights in the BOS-Florida market and PUJ? All have now been rolled back to previous levels aside from BOS-MIA. Not so easy competing with LCC/ULCCs in these Florida markets when you don't dominate the other end.

When Delta made the statement recently that 2020 growth would come mostly at core hubs I a) didn't believe it and b) wondered how that was possible with SEA/BOS/MIA needs. I'm shocked they have not announced MIA flights when it was heavily foreshadowed on the earnings call. "Have we put those in the schedule yet?"

Appears that all the WN cuts in March are Max related. WN also adding ABQ-SAT Saturday only for the summer, didn't come up in the report for some reason.

Kind of some real, real interesting adds and cuts at WN. Adds especially at United’s metropolitan hub cities. Cuts through the central part of the country.
Aesthetically the A 340 got it right!

It's hard to see long-term viability for an airline that has a single large hub plus 1-2 focus cities all on the west coast. In addition to trying to keep gate space in SEA, these moves must be a precursor for some future strategic move. I agree the most likely scenario would be a tie-up with B6. How about a merger with WN? Not sure that would be allowed however.

What’s with AA’s ORD-SEA cuts? It’s going from 3 to 1.9 ... which really strikes me as odd. Is DL putting that much pressure on them with their recent addition of the route?

Suprised at the AS reduction LAX-SJO...maybe Costa Rica isn't so popular in the summer?

Those WN adds are huge in June...they must be confident of the MAX being back in service by then?

They are both like two-legged stools, although I’d rather have BOS and JFK than just SEA.

AS retreating to SEA makes me question the move of buying Virgin America. Though I would need context during that time period

B6 has a lopsided route structure as well...although I think it is somewhat better than AS's network. Three major airport operations in BOS/JFK/FLL. Also the Mint product is far superior to any premium cabin offering that AS has.

In addition to B6 Mint killing AS on FLL - LAX . AA has a subpar product on MIA -LAX and people are switching to B6. I think within another 2 years B6 will be up to 6x daily.

One could say the same thing about a carrier with two hubs and a focus city on the East Coast, except the West Coast carrier has consistently higher margins and ops performance over the last decade.

When a noreaster or line of thunderstorms hits the east coast B6's operation goes to HELL and back. SEA usually doesn't have those year round weather concerns.

AS has been around since 1932, has never declared bankruptcy and is one of the world's most consistently profitable airlines. We can debate the VX acquisition ad nauseum but I would never count AS out. Latest strategy is what they feel is required to keep the company successful. That usually means reductions in some markets and adding new ones...that's the airline industry in a nutshell. .

Every discussion regarding AS changes ends up evolving into an AS/B6 merger discussion...

AS doesn't need to have hubs spread across the U.S. in order to stay viable. It stays viable by being a financially successful and well run operation with a loyal frequent flyer base.

Regarding the VX acquisition, maybe it wasn't the best move for AS, but at a minimum it eliminated a competitor on the west coast, which only helps improve its viability.

SEA has always been its bread and butter, which is why it has always focused its growth there. AS' limitations are SEA's inadequate infrastructure, though that has also helped slow down DL's ambitions, so one could say SEA's capacity constraints has actually helped AS fend off DL.

Looks like some retrenchment at SMF for AS this summer. In addition to the previously announced Kona, Maui becomes only a tropical memory (SW seems to have run them off), and San Diego frequency cut to 3x daily from 4x. Please note this means FAT will have greater frequency to San Diego on Alaska than Sacramento in 2020...

It's interesting to see AA continue to cut a key west coast trunk route - PHX-SFO. I've been flying this route for years and it's fluctuated between 4-5x per day on 321s and now down to 3x

I think DL just picked too many battles at the same time. AS has now adopted the most lopsided "defend one hub" strategy imaginable and B6 is adding up to 30% ASM at BOS YoY in Q3. All this while economy is slowing down, especially in the middle of the country where their most profitable hubs sit.
And the most important of their coastal hubs LAX is the one that has been neglected for a couple of years (due to terminal work I would imagine) and needs growth again.

Still kind of weird to me AS and B6 have not yet pursued a code share partnership. It would benefit both airlines tremendously.

How does a domestic codeshare benefit either airline?

Aside from the feed? Now a ff can reach a city otherwise unserved. So it improves each network.

Is there any net growth at AA? It looks like more cuts than adds for several OAG reports.

I think shifting 2 or 3 of those weekly frequencies to Fresno-Hawaii would do well during the summer.

PAE-PSP gets cut in late May, with AS adding a 2nd daily on PAE-SNA. It then returns in early October with PAE-SNA going back down to 1x daily.

AS is capped at 18 flights a day at PAE, so it has to strategically make the best use of its frequencies. Considering the winter seasonal nature of PSP, it makes sense to deploy the aircraft elsewhere in the summer time.

Some of the first routes AS started in response to DL's initial SEA expansion.

Market share and gates at JFK, SFO, and LAX. Particularly at SFO, AS and VX went from marginally relevant independently to being more competitive in all top markets and #2 to UA.

B6 offers very few logical or meaningful connections to AS customers. Conversely, AS brings ANC and Hawai’i to the table, but significant origins on the east coast are already served by AS.

Seasonal route which was launched with 6 others on 12/18 and end date 04/06, this was the only one outside of COS with a further end date

Regarding AS adding mainline on SEA-BIL/BZN/MSO, I don't think we've seen mainline jets between SEA and Montana since Northwest Orient did it in the 1970's and 80's.

Most airlines reduce service to PSP in the summer. It's a very seasonal destination. Also, SNA (closest to Disneyland) likely sees a summer increase.

Good to know, thanks (I must of missed the seasonal part). I really do hope this works as I am a fan of smaller, mid-western cities getting additional service.

AA's load factors have been high and continue to be high through winter. I can't help but think they are trying REALLY HARD to drive up RASM by limiting capacity.

How is AS’ network structure unviable but B6’s is?

B6 has a lopsided route structure as well...although I think it is somewhat better than AS's network. Three major airport operations in BOS/JFK/FLL. Also the Mint product is far superior to any premium cabin offering that AS has.

When a noreaster or line of thunderstorms hits the east coast B6's operation goes to HELL and back. SEA usually doesn't have those year round weather concerns.

Sometimes it seems like a one way trip to hell. You need to go away for a couple of weeks, then come back to see things in a positive light. Agreed, weather-wise, I’d rather be west-focused.

Looks like some of the AS cuts are summer seasonal cuts FLL-LAX, PAE-PSP, MSY-SFO, & OGG-SMF.

How can you tell with those?

Wouldn't anything showing in the schedules past August be more likely spaceholders than anything?

If they were going to completely cut a route, why would they leave certain dates in the schedule, I have hardly ever seen an airline do that.

By certain dates, what do you mean?

Are you seeing dates after service is showing 0, but before August, that they're showing? Or do you just mean after August?

After August

FLL-LAX, SFO-MSY, & PAE-PSP run up to May 20, then show up Oct 8
