I'm a HUGE Boeing fan, but shouldn't we get the 737-10MAX out of the gate first, see it's actual performance and THEN make a determination? No one knows, bro.

They might but then again they might not...

I think it will be dependent of several things chief among which will be how the 777X is in service and how it is received by the airlines.

I might be totally wrong on this but the 787 cross section seems to work quite well and rather than an upgrade to the 787-10 (a la 763->763er) it will be more of a reuse of the cross section to form a larger family (a la A300->A330).

As Frisco says though, the the max crap out the way first. As a platform the 787 is pretty good and probably doesn’t need fiddling with yet..

That thread is discussing current 787-10's range and payload capability. With that said if one were to look through that thread. They would see an ER version of the -10 would require a sizeable MTOW increase. As the current issue isnt fuel capacity but MTOW. The 787-10 will hit MTOW before its tanks are even full.

Witht hat said I dont expect an ER version as an MTOW increase would require it to grow towards the 777-8. Now is Boeing drops the -8 then I could see an ER version. And it sounds like the 777-8 is not selling well. Time will tell.

I think you’re a little confused. This is about the 787 not the 737.

In general, I can't see any company offering a product that offers limited sales / profit potential. In this particular case, the frame isn't as well-suited to such a niche market as the A350 (I think we've seen proof of this lately). If Airbus offers whatever modifications are necessary to achieve the range/payload Qantas is looking for, the model will likely be "good enough" for many customers who might purchase what you're thinking about. The lower weight, larger MTOW bumps (relatively easily) and early EIS have that segment locked-down if indeed anyone requires such an aircraft.

On the other hand, with the future of the company and profits always a priority - they have SO MANY other things they need to worry about right now, that the answer is almost certainly a resounding "NO!" They just can't (not that I think they should anyways).

There almost certainly will be a longer range 787-10 at some point. Boeing needs a replacement for all the 777-200ER & 200LR's they sold in the 1990's, the 787-10 seems the natural replacement. The 777-9 will be the " 747 with two engines", it could be the largest twin available. The 777-10 will probably be a niche airplane if it ever does get made.

There have been claims that Boeing are already working in it. In their announcement of the 78J buy NZ said: "The game changer for us has been that by working closely with Boeing, we’ve ensured the 787-10 will meet our network needs, including the ability to fly missions similar to our current 777-200 fleet“. In a pay walled piece Ostrower apparently claimed Boeing were going to offer a 6t increase in MTOW.

Is that correct? Those who know aren’t saying. The engineering implications are unclear. Boeing had two opportunities to up the MTOW: the major development effort that went into the -9, and then the -10. MTOW stayed at 254t. It’s a tight design and we don’t have good info on whether Boeing could offer a serious increase in MTOW on the current wing/wingbox/gear.

Then there’s the question of why they would go the re-engineering route if there was a reasonable prospect of an Ultrafan/GE equivalent giving them a serious improvement in fuel burn and range in the mid/late 2020s.

We have another thread ongoing to extend 787-10 range:
