Missing Helicopter off Kauai's Coast

Fri Dec 27, 2019 6:17 pm

Sounds like a Eurocopter AS350 failed to return last night from a tourist flight to Kauai's Na Pali Coast with 1 pilot and 6 passengers on board. Search and rescue activities ongoing. I know the weather during the winter along the Na Pali Coast can be challenging at best. Hopefully the pilot was able to set the helicopter down and these people will be found.

I don't. All the articles and TV news have only said it was a Safari Helicopter out of Lihue.

For those who know the superstition, here’s the third crash of the day yesterday:

That's horrible. I've done that tour with Blue Hawaiian. It's an absolutely gorgeous tour and provides memories for a lifetime. I hope that these passengers died quickly and without fear or awareness. RIP to them and strength and peace to their friends and family for their shocking and untimely deaths.

Seems like a pretty preventable crash. Unless he couldn't get full power that looks like either out of balance or maybe too heavy.

Done it twice myself - I agree it's amazing. From reports I've seen, this is the operator's first accident and they've been flying for 30 years. So they had a perfect safety record until this crash. Sad for those who perished. I would imagine getting investigators to the crash site will be a challenge - pretty rugged terrain in that area and there are no roads anywhere close

Presumably, they'd get them out there by helicopter. If the crash site is on a cliff face, then that's going to be difficult to get to irrespective of roads. But gravity, being gravity, tends to pull debris down to flat places so I would imagine that a lot of the debris wound up on the beach. That raises tides as the big challenge, because the seas at high tide can wash the debris out.
