Northwest Airlines early 90's SYD service

Sun Dec 29, 2019 7:29 pm

I was talking with a friend and he mentioned he flew from SYD to LAX in the early 1990's via Japan on Northwest. When did this service start and why Japan instead of direct (SYD-LAX)? Why did Northwest eventually pull out of SYD and return with the DL merger almost 2 decades later.

If I recall from prior threads, they were allowed some Japanese O & D, but they relied to heavily on that and weren't able to fill enough seats on the Sydney to USA side of things.

Google is your friend. LAX-KIX-SYD started in 1991. When it isn't a problem of air treaty rights, it's money.

NW did fly LAX-SYD non-stop back in the 90's as well on their 747-400's. Short lived & a bunch of us from Portland went on it courtesy of the carrier.

I remember flying this service to NYC. In 1993 it was via Osaka Itami into JFK (SYD- ITM 747-200. ITM-JFK 747-400) but by 1995 they stopped JFK and it would fly into Detroit ( 747-400 both sectors) with onward connection to New York. I think the flight No.s were NW 69/70 for SYD- DTW/JFK and NW 73/74 for SYD-LAX flights but i could be wrong. I don't think they ever flew SYD-ITM-LAX, it always was direct flight to LAX from SYD.

Until the US-Australia open skies agreement in 2008 only one carrier from each side (Qantas and United, previously Pan Am) were allowed to operate daily flights between the USA and Australia. No other airline was permitted to operate more than 4 weekly.

As already said Japan withdrew Northwest's route authority because the route was - in effect - sold as two separate flights (SYD-KIX and KIX-LAX with no one flying SYD-LAX). They were required to sell a majority of seats US-Australia but never got close to achieving that.

If I am not mistaken (someone correct me if I am wrong) this was a way for Northwest to enter Australia without a formal bi-lateral route proceeding (?). Strategically, I would think it had hopes of making the Narita hub stronger as more passengers would fill the existing U.S. to Narita spokes, with added benefit of picking up Japanese travelers. Perhaps ending the service was due to Northwest having better slot allocation necessities. And Delta started up it's service after the merger almost like a vanity route as a newly minted international powerhouse! These are all theoretical.

Some times Google isn't your friend..DTW-KIX-SYD was the routing. LAX-SYD on a 744 was the other route.

It was JFK KIX SYD, and it didn’t do the business, so they moved the orginator to Detroit, DTW KIX SYD. Still didn’t work. So it got canned.

(To the patronising “google is your friend” guy — it never operated LAX KIX SYD — a simple map is your friend.)

The June 1991 NW timetable says SYD would start 1 July. Timetable for 1 Aug just shows flight 76 SYD to HNL 4/week -- nothing beyond. TT for 5 Sept shows 4/week SYD- HNL-LAX.

15 Dec 1991 shows flight 86 weekly to HNL-LAX, 74 3/week to LAX, 70 3/week to OSA-JFK. Ditto thru July 1992; in Aug 1992 add a DC10 2/week to HNL-LAX.

SYD-HNL ended in 1993; eff 1 October 1993 flight 70 became SYD-OSA-DTW, still 3/week. SYD-OSA-DTW and SYD-LAX still in the 15 Dec 1993 timetable.

Next timetable I have is Sept 1994 -- no SYD, so probably they never flew SYD-KIX.
