Boeing 737MAX Grounding News and Reference Thread 2020 [Ungrounded by FAA 18NOV2020]

Tue Dec 31, 2019 9:57 am

To start 2020 on top of the general discussion on the 737MAX Grounding, a second thread which will be for news and a reference guide will take place below. This second thread is for easy reference to the latest news without getting lost in the general discussion thread.

For those wanting to participate in the general discussion please leave it to the general discussion thread. Please add below any news that arises and the timelines will be updated on a weekly basis. Please ensure that you add links to any news

The information below is not yet complete. Rather than wait until all information is gathered I have decided to go with what I have and will endeavour to have everything updated within the next week, time permitting of course

The format below includes

737MAX delivered broken down by airline, movements since grounding (incomplete at the moment)
737MAX pre delivery broken by airline, current stored location
Timeline of news events, every quarter has a separate post

I agree....very well done.

I'm shocked to see how many undelivered frames WN is waiting on; 35 total,
along with the original 34 being stored in VCV.

Southwest's MX team will have quite a job on their hands getting that many planes
back in service.

Well done !

Is there any consensus on the plan to get the stored aircraft delivered once they have the green light ?

Will they going to use the factory workers to get some of the stored aircraft compliant ?

What will the priority be, deliveries or productivity ramp up ?

The Boeing press release of Dec 16th says:

Throughout the grounding of the 737 MAX, Boeing has continued to build new airplanes and there are now approximately 400 airplanes in storage. We have previously stated that we would continually evaluate our production plans should the MAX grounding continue longer than we expected. As a result of this ongoing evaluation, we have decided to prioritize the delivery of stored aircraft and temporarily suspend production on the 737 program beginning next month.

Wake up to find out that you are the eyes of the world
The heart has its beaches, its homeland and thoughts of its own
Wake now, discover that you are the song that the morning brings
The heart has its seasons, its evenings and songs of its own

I don't recall seeing these DeFazio quotes elsewhere, although they seem to date from before the Boeing CEO was ousted, so I have added this as reference material.

Re- FAA Head Of Safety - did he lie, was he just incompetent, is his position a Nuremberg defence or maybe a combination of all three?.

Comment to the discussion thread of course.

Turkish Airlines says reaches compensation deal over Boeing 737 MAX

It did not specify the size of the payment but Turkey’s Hurriyet newspaper reported that it was worth $225 million including $150 million in compensation and $75 million covering things such as spare parts and training.

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-boei ... SKBN1YZ0A4

To put the reported numbers into perspective, TK has 12 grounded Maxes, and 12 others were scheduled to be delivered since grounding . 2020 is going to be a dark year for Boeing financially! The good news is that there might be a clearer picture as to when the Max would flying again.

Brilliant summary, many thanks for posting.

Just a couple of typos I found : Under Southwest N2708Q should be N8708Q, and N8716N should be N8716B. Under Westjet C-GGDDE should be C-GDDR.

Happy New Year,
Derek.

A moment ago in Financial Times:

Airbus: fight risk
If Boeing scraps the 737 Max, it could be the worst-case scenario for both manufacturers
https://www.ft.com/content/6a6d665f-a2f ... 790afad3bc (paywall)

Main point of the article: if Max is scrapped Airbus will have to spend a lot on R&D fast to compete with new Boeing plane - which will not be good for shareholders.
Not a new thought, what interested me was seeing in a subtitle in major financial newspaper: "If Boeing scraps the 737 Max". Also in the article: "The fate of the 737 Max remains unknown".

U.S. Regulators Mull Ordering Extra Simulator Training for Boeing 737 MAX Pilots

https://www.wsj.com/articles/u-s-regula ... _lead_pos6

The FAA is thinking about mandatory simulator training for 737MAX pilots.

quote:

The FAA’s changed outlook on simulator training has arisen partly because Boeing and regulators are proposing rewriting some emergency checklists for pilots and creating some new ones, according to some of these officials.

In addition, one of these officials said, the FAA expects certain cockpit alert lights to be updated so they can notify crews of potential problems with an automated stall-prevention feature called MCAS. Misfires of that system led to two fatal MAX nosedives in less than five months, taking 346 lives and resulting in global grounding of the planes in March.

Simulator training typically is used to ensure flight crews understand and can respond appropriately to numerous changes in emergency procedures or alerts.

FAA is reviewing wiring issue found on the 737 MAX:

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-boei ... SKBN1Z40U9

https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/05/busi ... 7-max.html

"The New York Times reported Boeing is reviewing whether two bundles of wiring are too close together, which could lead to a short circuit and potentially result in a crash if pilots did not respond appropriately" via Reuters.
Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.

Seattle Times ( https://www.seattletimes.com/business/b ... huts-down/ ) provides an answer:

The first wave of reassignment notices went out to employees Monday, informing some workers on the 737 jet program in the Puget Sound region that they will be temporarily transferred to the 767 and 777 programs in Everett.

Other Renton workers will be sent to Moses Lake in Central Washington, where more than 200 completed but undelivered MAXs are currently parked for long-term storage. And some will go to Victorville, Calif., which Boeing has newly designated as another MAX storage site.

Assembly line mechanics and engineers will work at those locations on maintaining the parked aircraft. Then, as soon as regulators give clearance for the MAX to fly again, they’ll do the extensive lubrication and systems testing necessary before the jets can return to flight.

It'd be interesting to know more, i.e. if some will need re-training, and if housing assistance will be provided, etc.

Leeham News reports that Boeing internally sees production suspension of the 737 MAX of at least 60 days, LNA thinks it will be more like 90 days.

The FAA is proceeding slowly and flight testing is going at a snail’s pace, LNA is told. Only one airplane has been authorized for flight testing by the FAA. This compares with three or four normally used by Boeing for tests of this nature
.

With all these factors casting continued uncertainty over the recertification of the MAX, restarting production appears highly unlikely though March—90 days from now. Internally, Boeing so far doesn’t see production restarting through February.

EASA and FAA to meet with Boeing/Rockwell Collins for software audit:
"The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) both confirmed on Tuesday that they will meet in the Seattle-area with Boeing before heading to a Rockwell Collins facility in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, in an effort to complete the audit."
https://www.bing.com/amp/s/mobile.reute ... SKBN1Z628I

EASA is notoriously strict, in my opinion, on software audits. Both the software and paper must be in order. I can speculate as to why, but I'll stop at my opinion.

Local news is reporting that the GE Aviation plant in Bromont, Québec, is laying off some 70 temporary employees directly as a result of the MAX grounding. This plant makes turbine blades for the Leap-1A and 1B engines.

Article in French:

Fair use excerpt, translated:

According to our information, these layoffs are notably related to the 737 MAX 8 manufactured by Boeing, one of the principal clients of the enterprise.

Folks, this is a special reference thread so users may find information on the MAX easily, instead of it being lost in discussion.

There is a general MAX thread:

A Spirit thread:

David Calhoun installed as CEO of Boeing, pointing out one area of opportunity is greater transparency and accountability:

Calhoun kicked off his new job with a 13 January letter to all Boeing staff in which he lays out priorities and promises to improve the company’s transparency and commitment to safety.

“We have work to do to uphold our values and to build on our strengths. I see greatness in this company, but I also see opportunities to be better,” Calhoun’s letter says. “That includes engaging one another and our stakeholders with greater transparency, holding ourselves accountable to the highest standards of safety and quality and incorporating outside-in perspective on what we do and how we do it.”

Interesting article from Leeham news.

Boeing likely faces an extended timeline to clear its inventory of 400 737 MAXes. LNA estimates it will be well into 2022 before these new-production airplanes are delivered to customers.

Has anyone noticed that (according to flightaware) one of AC's MAX 8's flew from Marana to Windsor, ON today.

Seems odd unless there's a glimmer of hope something good is finally happening. I know I'm reaching. Why would they want to do this?

https://flightaware.com/live/flight/ACA2350/history/20200116/1715Z/KMZJ/CYQG

Also interesting it was flying at FL270. One would think they'd cruise higher if it's empty.
A good landing is one you can walk away from. A great landing is if the aircraft can be flown again.

I noticed that too, looks like one flew YUL-MZJ today, too. My guess would be bringing them back for scheduled maintenance.
