I had also mentioned that AS would be able to offer connections onto FLL-PDX nonstop flights from some AS destinations in the Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and Hawaii if AS adds FLL-PDX nonstop service.

I had also mentioned AS adding PDX-IND/BNA/MSY/RDU/SAT/TPA nonstop service as possibilities with IND, BNA, MSY, RDU, SAT, and TPA being 6 of the top destinations that AS doesn't currently serve nonstop from PDX.

The E175 aircraft compliments the current Boeing 737 mainline flying in, to and from the state of Alaska and is perfect for many communities where larger jets are not the best option.


Nice.

Also the start date is some time in October 2020

Don’t think it’s certified for pas ever flights. You need a perimeter fence. Crash fire rescue, TSA,etc. And it hardly filed a dash 8/Saab 340

CP didn't choose to stop flying it there, Delta did!

I thought the purpose of sending the E175to AK was to fly them to CDB since RVN is gone to connect it to the surrounding area (Sand Point/King Cove etc) and for the commercial fisherman like Pen Air did with its Saab 2000s. I suppose AS chose the E175 as it’s closest in capacity to the Saab’s and can manage the rest through EAS I sssume.

QX stopped flying q400s there because they kept breaking.

E175 to southwest should have absolutely no problems. It’ll be on a jet bridge at FAI this time.

QX's ERJ-175s are certified to RNP approach minima as well as CAT III auto land so it should not be an issue to operate these aircraft in AK. Operational reliability should also be better since the airplane is newer. DL has had both CP and OO fly the E175 to SIT, KTN, and FAI for quite a while and it does fine. The trouble with DL's SEA-FAI flight on CP was that the flight often went out very heavy with fuel for alternate purposes.

The Alaskan natives also didn't take too kindly to AS/QX operating the DH4 on ANC-FAI as they saw it as a downgrade from the 737s they always had. This should solve that issue. QX operating the E175 in AK has always been a big possibility.

I think it’ll wind up on CDB with greatly increased frequency.

I wonder if there will be some SEA-Alaska routes that will be E75s as well, to connect the aircraft over. I imagine it will be a small fleet out of ANC. I can see some SEA-JNU/FAI/SIT type of routes. Maybe even some of the milk runs, but maybe not. AS has a pretty well oiled and subsidized machine in the state of Alaska, perhaps best not to fix what’s not broken? I imagine it will also depend on how much traffic recovers. Intra-State Alaska has not had a quarantine and the state government has been basically promoting intra-State travel.

I'm not sure southwest would want to go into Alaska cause I don't believe most of their aircraft have the right options for operating in Alaska where CAT III equipment so unless southwest wants to dedicate aircraft they would have to upgrade a lot of planes equipment.

Why do you think WN has any interest at all in tertiary Alaska (the state, not the airline) routes? They've got no PNW hub (so any route to Alaska is long). They've got nothing smaller than 737-700s.

Nobody except AS and to a smaller extent DL will have any sort of significant Alaska presence, not feasible except for those two at the moment.

I’m not sure where you might have heard that - but that is strictly the opposite of what they’ve said. The state has been trying to eliminate non-critical intra-state travel from the start of COVID. Heck, it’s still on the AS website... though, now it refers only to a ban on non essential travel to/from communities “off a road system”. If there is a sizable outbreak in these small villages, it would absolutely wreak havoc on what essentially is a nonexistent healthcare system

Now - whether it is enforced or enforceable is a different story. Though I had heard stories of folks being denied travel to/from villages like OME which led to some commotion

Only way I see the E175 going out there is if they supplement it with freighter service.

I’d expect it in ADQ before long, though. Maybe also BET.

Probably a pipe dream but I really wish they’d start up ENA and HOM using the E175.

Flying in Southeast in not some of the easier flying around with most of the special PIC airports in the whole states located there as well. Also with the cargo the milk runs bring (61, 64. 65, 66) there is more money underneath especially in the winter months when not everyone needs to get to a place like YAK for fishing.

Intra-state travel was essential travel in the spring.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they routed it through FAI-SEA or ANC-PDX to rotate the planes.

They didn’t have ETOPS planes until they wanted them for Hawaii. They also didn’t have any international flights until they made the investment.

If they see a business case for AK, they’ll do it. I personally think they will in the next 3-5 years.

FAI is not too far. Delta did it. They are going to need someone way to rotate them to L48. With the Q they had an orphan fleet and had to fly non revenue legs to rotate frames.

From the article:

I can't imagine that the AS mainline pilots are particularly happy about this. SEA-ANC/FAI on an E75? There is *nothing* regional about such a route. Those are AS's trunk routes to Alaska. Sure it says it "complements" the mainline service, but you'd be naive to think that if it does well you won't see more frequencies go to the Embraer post COVID. I expect some sort of stink.

ANCSEA will be one flight a day to rotate. Like they used to do with the combi.

I bet we'll see 1 or maybe 2 SEA-ANC frequencies downgauged to the E75. Out of what... like 16-20 daily flights that AS normally operates on that route?

AA has done stuff like this too. PHX-LAX and PHX-DFW each have seen a daily CR7/CR9 rotation for a while now for aircraft bridging purposes. The rest of the frequencies on those hub-to-hub routes are mostly A321s.

Yeah — I doubt AS would be bold and launch this right out the gate — but there is potential. UNK doesn’t have TSA but they do have crash, fire, rescue. And Unalakleet itself shouldn’t be discounted on its size alone. While the town may only be 1000 people it host a regional sub-clinic, the district offices for the Bering Straits School District and the headquarters of Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. So lots of government entities buying seats. And the locals aren’t too keen on flying 100 miles to Nome to catch a flight to Anchorage — weather permitting.

Alaska Air Cargo recently began scheduled service to UNK as well.

I agree that WN adding service to ANC is a possibility as Dave Harvey, the Vice President of Southwest Business, had said in a presentation given at the 2016 ACI-NA JumpStart Air Service Development Conference that ANC is one of the top U.S. markets that isn't currently served by WN. There was also a Dallas Business Journal article back in 2017 that mentioned WN possibly adding service to Alaska.

There are routes other than ANC-SEA are within the range of E-175 regional jets such as ANC-PDX, ANC-GEG, ANC-BLI, ANC-EUG, ANC-RDM, ANC-YKM, and ANC-PSC.

AS also already operates E-175 regional jets on a few nonstop routes that are longer than ANC-SEA such as PDX-DAL, SEA-DAL, SEA-OKC, and SFO-DAL.

AS operating E-175 regional jets on its ANC-PDX nonstop route is a possibility, and AS adding ANC-GEG nonstop service using E-175 regional jets might also be a possibility.

Yeah — I doubt AS would be bold and launch this right out the gate — but there is potential. UNK doesn’t have TSA but they do have crash, fire, rescue. And Unalakleet itself shouldn’t be discounted on its size alone. While the town may only be 1000 people it host a regional sub-clinic, the district offices for the Bering Straits School District and the headquarters of Norton Sound Economic Development Corp. So lots of government entities buying seats. And the locals aren’t too keen on flying 100 miles to Nome to catch a flight to Anchorage — weather permitting.

Alaska Air Cargo recently began scheduled service to UNK as well.

No I can 100% discount UNK on an e175. They could not fill small 30 seat turboprops when they had them.

ENA and HOM are many magnitudes bigger than UNK

Well if CAT IIIa and RNP counts for anything then it's a 750+ plane fleet. It it has to be full CAT III autoland then no.

You don’t need auto land to land in Alaska. DC 3s fly there. Only a few airports even have ILS. YAK and KTN are the only ILS in southeast for example.

WN has CAT IIIA capability on their entire fleet, HUDs and all. Just like Alaska.

Interesting that they're basing some E175's there. The only potential issue I see in some of the flights they may do up there is cargo capacity, especially if the airfield in question can't fit the AS 73G freighters.

At one point, AS Cargo was talking about wanting a 738, but not being able to get one until the MAX was flying. Has anyone heard about plans in a post COVID word?

A larger pure freighter fleet might make space for more E175s if the belly room of a 737 is not needed.

Eyeing the building competition between AS and B6 -- according to some here on A.net anyway -- regarding EWR, transcons in general, etc., I wonder if PHL-CA (specifically
SAN is my primary interest of course) might be a next target for one or the other of the two cx? I search for markets that one or the other of the airlines might add ahead of the other.

There seems talk that PHL, along with EWR, might be a new target for expansion by Blue. I wonder if AS, which currently serves PHL only from SEA but has offered PDX-PHL in the past, might be considering a couple of CA-PHL routes? Or is this way down the list of opportunities for AAG especially considering their buddies at AA have all the PHL-markets pretty well covered?

Regarding EWR routes that AS currently offers, I can't see much they could do to increase their presence but maybe just remain in the 5 or so markets they serve from Liberty?Maybe a couple of slight frequency increases, depending on what AS plans to do at their other NYC airport... but what else could they really do?
