Most of the city codes in that article aren’t in the word scramble... so who knows what they could announce

They said in a reply that double-digits is the number of new routes. So, looking for at least 10 new routes.

It's not a route announcement as declared in the OP's title; a route can't be defined with a single airport code any more than a line segment can be defined by a single point. This is a tiresome method of engaging av geeks without providing much real information. You've been had.

Sure you can. I see DEN, IAD, IAH, EWR and BOS. Those are clearly not new cities. I see MHK. It would be likely that MHK would be served from DEN. BOS and FLL might be a route, for example. It's a fun game, to drum up excitement. If they wanted you to know the routes instantly they would just put out a presser, which they will be doing this afternoon. No one is being had. It's just a game.

Could we see route drops similar to AA's announcement last month?

I don’t think they would be making a big announcement like this to drop routes?

Find the airports in the boggle game that we’re eliminating service to!

Somewhat innovative but kind of cutesy and corny. Not surprised in the current times so you have to tip your cap to UA for thinking outside the box. There’s going to be a lot of that in the future. My guess are new routes will be replacements for service they’ve reduced or might be reduced/eliminated in the months to come. There will not be any increase in overall service levels. There’s just no reason for it.

Most likely reallocating capacity from business to leisure-oriented markets. There's no reason for 14x LGA-ORD or EWR-SFO if business travelers are on the sidelines for the rest of the year.

How to play:

1. Find the 3-letter airport codes in the game.

2. Airport codes are formed in any direction from letters that adjoin horizontally, vertically or diagonally.

3. Letters may be used more than once, but not more than once within a single code.

Love how every "travel blogger" says they will never fly AA/Ethihad again and then says it again and again on subsequent flights.

I've found quite a few options, some of which sound plausible. This is what I've been able to find:

FLL
FLG
BEG
BOS
SCL
RSW
ORD
PIT
BOS
LGA
CMH
CLE
COS
ROC
EWR
EDI
GLA
MKE
MAA
MAD
MAN
MCO
DEN
DES

I'm sure there are dozens of possible routes with just these routes, not to mention any that I haven't found.

Of their hubs, they have: ORD, IAD, IAH, DEN, EWR
Other codes I can identify are: LGA, MKE, PIT, BOS, CMH, TPA, MCO, FLL, CLE, IND, MHK, RSW
Edit: codes from other posters: BEG, DES, COS, ROC, EDI, GLA, MAA, MAD, MAN

No sure how that compares to their current route structure, but I would venture to say any combination of hub and spoke that wasn't flown pre-covid will be the adds.

Feels like flight scheduling is going back in time. Reduced frequencies in top markets, i.e. JFK-LAX and tag flights that AS has been doing. Now all we need to see are a few 727s added.

So we finally answered what UA was going to do with the LGA slots they were using for LGA-CLE (5X daily).

I really don't expect these LGA routes to last very long. Like a lot of adds by other carriers, these seem to be added with the goal of capturing Florida demand that will likely come back over the winter time. Hard to see these routes do well with UA's cost level. UA just doesn't have enough pricing power at LGA.

Of course, if you are B6/AA, you will probably see this as a retaliation. Now, DL might retaliate against UA with some EWR adds also.

To some extent yeah...the press release is a little confusing so I'm not sure exactly what is daily and what is peak day only. Either way looks like UA is jumping back into the point to point game.

There may be up too double daily service to all of those cities I listed from LGA.

Interesting. That's quite a departure from UAs pre-COVID business model, but it makes sense if that's where the demand is right now.

The BOS flying is going to be probably pretty rough - UA is pretty weak in that POS. If the MKE flights are struggling and priced cheap they'll end up with a lot of reverse leakage from the North Suburbs of Chicago (similar to when Ted flew from MDW). Same with the LGA flights as I understand they are flying these to help retain the slots without flying way too much ORD-LGA and LGA-IAD. If business travel hasn't recovered after this and they still have to squat on LGA slots they might have to squat with a bunch of LGA-IAD flights on 50 seaters or maybe they just retain the Florida flying through the Spring. IND-RSW on an A320 is a pretty big swag too. Odd that RSW was the station they picked from IND too, must be lack of competition.

Yeah and at the end of the day that is what makes sense for UA to do right now...follow the customer (and $$$.) UA has the gates, slots and aircraft available to operate these routes right now. As the situation improves, and other routes become more in demand and higher yielding, UA will probably shift assets away from these routes. For the moment though it's a nice change of pace from UA.

Interesting...We can see Florida demand coming back a bit and earlier than business routes or international, but not sure how airlines will have pricing power when they are all dumping capacity to Florida. PHL-MCO will have something like 25 flights on Saturdays in December (as currently scheduled).

I don't think UA is as obsessed with B6 as people on this board are. At the end of the day UA is focused on doing what is right for UA and if that happens to get in the way of one of their competitors plans so be it. I don't believe that is UAs primary motivation for launching these flights however rather it's simply UA chasing revenue.

Because there is no large hub carrier there? B6 and DL have nice sized operations but limited connecting ops and markets. It’s not a never ending supply of demand.
