Here we are, almost 400 A350 made.....

It almost feels like it was yesterday we were sitting here and counting down to FAL start of MSN #1 and later it's first flight. Those were the days. ;)

Airbus cleaned up its order book in the Dec 2019 O&D:

- Air Caraibes was identified as the "Undisclosed" Customer for 1x 35J
- Hong Kong Airlines cancellation for 6x 359
- Synergy Aerospace cancellation for 10x 359
- "Undisclosed" cancellation for 15x 359 (these were for Hainan Airlines)

Not to nitpick on you, but the figures seems to be a bit off. We are talking about HNA Group, numbers are confusing with them, I am not surprised.

According to FG article, Hong Kong Airlines cancelled 8 A359. Hong Kong Airlines initial order was for 15 A359 factory fresh from Airbus and six (6) more from lessors.

Their 15 factory fresh order was reduced to 13 when two A359 were transffered to Hainan Airlines (MSN 360365 and 360371 both NTU went to SAA). Out of 13 A359, Hong Kong Airlines will only take 5 A359. Based on the same article, out of these five (13 - 8= 5), three have been delivered.

Based on various sources, I found that none of their first six A359s delivered are from their own order book.
B-LGA- AerCap, stored at LDE
B-LGB- AerCap, stored at LDE
B-LGC- AerCap, active
B-LGD- AerCap, stored at LDE
B-LGE- ALAFCO, stored at HKG
B-LGH- ALAFCO, active

As for Hainan Airlines, they have 15 on order, they have sucessfully took delivery for two (B-1069 & B-1070), pending delivery for three (3) [B-308G, B-308H and B-308J] . How did they cancel 15??

Hong Kong Airlines cancellation was 8 not 6. It was a typo in my earlier post.

The rest is accurate.

Hong Kong Airlines' book now sits at 5 with 3 delivered. The 3 delivered are 246/251/260. All sitting in LDE in Hainan Airlines livery. The 2 undelivered are 270/283 which are currently looking for a new home. Hong Kong Airlines also operate(d) frames owned/delivered to lessors: 124/153/168/187 from Aercap (124/153/187 currently stored at LDE) and 235/256 from ALAFCO

Hainan Airlines' book was always zero. Its order for 15 was always in Unidentified. The Hainan Airlines deliveries so far are all from lessors. 2x from Aercap (98/112); 2x from LATAM which have subsequently gone to SAA (226/245); 4 from ALAFCO (285/308/323/338) and 2x from CITL (351/355).

Hope this clarifies

Hey hkcanadaexpat, thank you for the explanation. Now it is clearer.

Here is how I interpret your explanation, correct me please if I am wrong. What you meant is Hong Kong Airlines took delivery of leased airframes (124/ 153/ 168/ 187/ 235/ 256), and are now selling their owned airframes? Thus, technically 246/ 251/ 260 (all three HKA ntu) /270/283 are all looking for new home, should HNA Group does not have the $$ to take them up?

Now that you have mentioned about Hainan Airlines order being "Unidentified", I went to look up again with other sources just realised they are indeed. Seems weird why they keep it as Unidentified just like what they did with A380 order. Here are at least 21 A359 potentially looking for new home as HNA Group work out their finance. Seems a huge amount for Airbus/ lessors to move around.

Once again thanks for the explanation.

Hong Kong Airlines took delivery of the leased planes because they wanted more than the A350s directly ordered, and earlier. The intention was to always have them alongside the owned fleet (HKA/HNA had some grand visions). Some of those leased planes are also likely looking for new homes, especially the stored ones.

Small nit pick but 246/251/260 are technically not ”HKA ntu”, because HKA has taken delivery of them according to Airbus. But they are stored and not in service (similar to Ethiad’s A35ks), and likely looking for new homes. 270/283 are HKA ntu.

What a weird situation...EY having their A350s stored for whatever reason, then rumors they are interested in putting money into AI!

Yes, and enlarged the flag, dropped the orange, and added a grey strip that extends along the bottom of the fuselage before swooping up instead of the orange/blue.

Presumably the Bundesrepublik A359 will have the same livery as their existing A340s?

Thus, technically 246/ 251/ 260 (all three HKA ntu) /270/283 are all looking for new home, should HNA Group does not have the $$ to take them up?

Hong Kong Airlines took delivery of the leased planes because they wanted more than the A350s directly ordered, and earlier. The intention was to always have them alongside the owned fleet (HKA/HNA had some grand visions). Some of those leased planes are also likely looking for new homes, especially the stored ones.

Small nit pick but 246/251/260 are technically not ”HKA ntu”, because HKA has taken delivery of them according to Airbus. But they are stored and not in service (similar to Ethiad’s A35ks), and likely looking for new homes. 270/283 are HKA ntu.

Somehow Airbus managed to deliver the HKA NTU aircraft to lessor ALAFCO.

How can they do that while Boeing got stuck with white tails?

Airbus has white tails too, they both got stuck with them. Some of HNA’s 787s are actually GECAS planes iirc. Delivery was delayed while the lessor found a new customer.

I do not know the A350 MSNs, but I believe there are 2 or 3. There are also some ntu A333s from HNA as well.

There are two white tails (actually fully painted in white) at TLS. MSN 270 and MSN 283. On the order book, they are the two outstanding Hong Kong Airlines' orders.
Once they find a new home, we will see the order book change to the new owner(s).

They have not been delivered yet, either contractually or physically. They "belong" to Hong Kong Airlines as far as the order book is concerned. You see Hong Kong Airlines with 5 orders and 3 deliveries as of 12/31/19. They are obviously going to be NTUs. HX and Airbus are probably both looking for a new home for these frames.

I don’t know if this is off topic, but dose anyone have any word of Airbus making an assembly line in North America for the A350? There’s been talk that since demand is high for planes, like the A350, they might need more FALs.

I believe I'm correct in saying that 283 hasn't even flown yet.

Its been thrown around, primarily by Fliegerfaust, but its all speculation. As far as I know nothing is official and to be honest they don't really need that right now. There aren't many Customers in the Americas that have ordered the A350.

And if Fliegerfaust is the main source what probably happened is someone said to him “wouldn’t it be cool if Airbus built A350s in Mobile?” which in Fliegerfaust’s world is as good as official confirmation.

I don’t see it, especially with Airbus opening up A350 completion center in China.
