It seems they want to lower the costs of wet leasing 3 A340 as they are expensive to operate and fuel thirsty and with possible issues of RR continuing they need more aircraft to grow. Unfortunately they are desperate and everything that LOT wanted to be is not happening.

Surely the 777 is too big for that though? And shouldn’t the A340 leases be at least partially covered by compensation from RR?
Blerg wrote:Ok but what's their long term plan then? How long would the leases be for these 777s? Short term or long term? If they are long term then does it make sense for them to operate both the 777 and the 789? On top of already having 788. Add to that a bit of everything on the short-haul side and you get quite a mix which can't be cheap to service and maintain.

The aviation portal that is "source" of this information has zero credibility. Most of its commentators/journalists are former LOT employees from times when the company was run into the ground and now fortunately they have no more ties with LOT, thus no direct info/own credible leaks.
This particular info came from an aviation forum, where from time to time also some LOT employees are active, sharing various gossips, mostly but not always true.
LOT officially denied that it currently trains its crew to any other long-haul type than 787 and I don't think they intended to be so tricky as to use the fact that 777 and 787 are the same type. So this does not seem to be a true gossip.
As you rightly mentioned, also the logical reasoning speaks very much against it.

I really hope it's not true as LO has come a long way in recent times.

In the initial post I wrote 5 years for the lease, but who knows. As for having a big mix of aircraft, the CEO of LOT stated recently that it is a benefit due to issues with the 737Max. Take it for what it is, I guess he is not concerned about having such a diverse fleet, even if at one point it was a goal to go to cut down on the diversity.

Well it kinda looks that way, I’m wrong often but it kinda makes sense no? Being is worried that they might lose a future order for maybe another 20 or so 787s and more future 737Maxs so they give LOT a lifeline to keep them happy. If they will stay with LOT for 3 years and the inside hasn’t been updated I would imagine LOT would do some updates and bring in a Premium Eco to match the 787 fleet.
Yes aren’t 2 788s supposed to be based at BUD? I know short haul flights from BUD now are delayed to May or so.

787-8/9
Really not a very diverse fleet as it stands!

gloom wrote:Blerg wrote:Can they fit another three widebodies in WAW during their waves?
Taking into account you use waves to fill WB (so they depart a bit later than waves of NB doing shorter turnaround) and then fly them to one-two locations daily, it's probably easier than fitting another NB. Remember LOT is also having a higher share of RJ to standard NB, than most of the fleets.
Cheers,
Adam

LOT doesn't have any -300 or -500s. The -300 is opb. Getjet LY-GGC, One -400 is also operated by Getjet LY-MGC.
Blue Air is operating for LOT 2 737-800 and 1 737-700.
LOTs Boeing fleet is 737-400/800 only (excluding MAX).
If you want to count these planes, then add A340s as well.

That's not accurate. At the moment LOT uses only A320s from Getjet (LY-ELK flying now). Additionally they leased one 737-700 (SP-LUA, ex Blue Air, still in its colors), but Blue Air is no longer flying for LOT.

London probably has the highest seat availability of any city too:
3/4x W6 A321 daily to LTN
3x LOT various daily to LHR
2x LOT E190 to LCY
2x BA A32X to LHR

Starting from June 2020, LO will be increasing WAW-BEG from 11 to 12 weekly.

Looks like they are gone.
Sad there was no announcements for last flight, but LOT is not sentimental to retirements like other airlines.
The 400 was in LOTs fleet for 27 years and as classics 28 years.
